We explore 4-dimensional SU(
N
) gauge theory with a Weyl fermion in an irreducible self-conjugate representation. This theory, in general, has a discrete chiral symmetry. We use ’t Hooft ...anomaly matching condition of the center symmetry and the chiral symmetry, and find constraints on the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in the confining phase. The domain-walls connecting different vacua are discussed from the point of view of the ’t Hooft anomaly. We consider the SU(6) gauge theory with a Weyl fermion in the rank 3 anti-symmetric representation as an example. It is argued that this theory is likely to be in the confining phase. under the assumption of the confinement, although there cannot be any fermion bilinear condensate in this theory.
In biosciences and biotechnologies, it is recently critical to promote research regarding the regulation of the dynamic functions of proteins of interest. Light-induced control of protein activity is ...a strong tool for a wide variety of applications because light can be spatiotemporally irradiated in high resolutions. Therefore, synthetic, semi-synthetic, and genetic engineering techniques for photoactivation of proteins have been actively developed. In this review, the conventional approaches will be outlined. As a solution for overcoming barriers in conventional ones, our recent approaches in which proteins were chemically modified with biotinylated caging reagents are introduced to photo-activate a variety of proteins without genetic engineering and elaborate optimization. This review mainly focuses on protein caging and describes the concepts underlying the development of reported approaches that can contribute to the emergence of both novel protein photo-regulating methods and their killer applications.
The aim of this study was to identify a physical property suitable for evaluating the orthodontic force by analyzing the physical properties of thermoplastic materials. Four thermoplastic materials ...were used: Essix A+® Plastic (EA), DURAN® (DU), Erkodur (ER), and Essix C+® Plastic (EC). Finite element analysis (FEA), a water absorption test, constant strain loading test, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy analysis were conducted. FEA found a significant correlation between the elastic modulus and the orthodontic force. The water absorption of EC was significantly smaller than the other materials. EC showed no elastic modulus change. The XRD pattern indicated that EC was a crystalline polymer. FEA of thermoplastics showed that the elastic modulus is suitable for the evaluation of orthodontic force. The crystalline thermoplastic EC demonstrated a stable elastic modulus even under strain in a wet environment, suggesting the advantage of its use as an orthodontic aligner material.
The aim of this study was to build an in silico computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) resin-composite-block (RCB) model with different silane coupling ratios and to ...evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of the models, including the elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio, compressive strength, and maximum principal strain. Nanoscale CAD/CAM RCB models were designed by using CAD software that consisted of twelve spherical silica nanofiller particles and a resin matrix. Seven nanoscale models with different silane coupling ratios were prepared with the same filler volume contents. Homogenization analysis was conducted by using voxel-base finite-element analysis software to predict the elastic moduli and Poisson’s ratio of the macro CAD/CAM RCB. Localization analysis was used to analyze the maximum principal strain distribution in the hydrolysis layer. In silico multi-scale analysis demonstrated that the compressive strength of the CAD/CAM RCB was reduced with a decrease in the silane coupling ratios of the fillers.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the maximum amount of chlorhexidine (CHX) that could be incorporated to self-adhesive resin cements to add antibacterial effect without affecting the physical ...properties. The CHX was incorporated into a commercial self-adhesive resin cement at mass fractions of 0.5–15 wt%, and the CHX-release profile, antibacterial effect, flexural and bond strengths of experimental cements were evaluated. Increasing the CHX content from 5 to 15 wt% resulted in a higher released concentration of CHX. In agar diffusion tests, experimental cements containing 5, 10, and 15 wt% CHX produced inhibition zones against oral bacteria. In flexural strength and shear bond strength to dentin, no significant reduction was observed with the incorporation of 5 wt% CHX. This in vitro study suggests that the addition of 5 wt% CHX yielded an antibacterial self-adhesive cement and had no adverse effect on the flexural and shear bond strengths.
School teachers are in a unique position to recognize suicide-related problems in their students and to appropriately support them; teachers may need high levels of suicide literacy. However, few ...studies have examined current levels of suicide literacy in teachers. This study aimed to investigate suicide literacy in school teachers. Teachers (n = 857) from 48 Japanese schools (primary and junior-/senior-high) answered a self-administered questionnaire assessing (a) knowledge about suicide, (b) intention to ask about students' suicidal thoughts/plans, and (c) attitudes towards talking to students with mental health problems. The average proportion of correct answers to the knowledge questions (10 items) was 55.2%. Over half of the teachers knew that suicide is a leading cause of death in adolescents (55.0%), and that asking about suicidality is needed (56.2%). Half of the teachers intended to ask students about their suicidal thoughts (50.2%) and fewer intended to ask about experiences of planning suicide (38.8%). Most of the teachers (90.4%) agreed with the idea that talking to students with mental health problems was a teacher's responsibility. Intention to ask about students' suicidal thoughts/plans were higher in teachers in their 20s (vs. 40s-60s) and working at junior-/senior-high schools (vs. primary schools). Suicide literacy in Japanese school teachers was observed to be limited. However, teachers felt responsibility for helping students with mental health problems. The development and implementation of education programs may help improve teachers' suicide literacy, which, in turn, could encourage effective helping behaviors of teachers for students struggling with suicidality.
