Various kind of organics are toxic and detrimental, resulting in eutrophication, black, odorous water and so on. Photocatalysis has been deemed to be a promising technology which can decompose ...different kinds of organic pollutants under visible light irradiation, finally achieving non-poisonous, harmless CO2, water and other inorganic materials. Bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) is considered as a promising photocatalyst for the efficient degradation of organic pollutants due to its high chemical stability, unique layered structure, resistance to corrosion and favorable photocatalytic property. However, BiOCl can only absorb UV irradiation because of its wide band gap of 3.2 eV–3.5 eV that limits its photocatalytic performance. Herein, a lot of methods have been reviewed to improve its photocatalytic activity. We introduced the unique and special layered structure of BiOCl, the typical and common synthesis methods that can control the morphology, and the most important part is varies of modification routes of BiOCl and the application of BiOCl-based materials for photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. Besides, we summarized the crucial issues and perspectives about the application of BiOCl in pollution management.

Malachite Green (MG) is a banned pesticide for aquaculture products. As a required inspection item, its fast and accurate determination before the products' accessing market is very important. ...Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a promising tool for MG sensing, but it requires the overcoming of several problems such as fairly poor sensitivity and reproducibility, especially laser induced chemical conversion and photo-bleaching during SERS observation. By using a graphene wrapped Ag array based flexible membrane sensor, a modified SERS strategy was proposed for the sensitive and accurate detection of MG. The graphene layer functioned as an inert protector for impeding chemical transferring of the bioproduct Leucomalachite Green (LMG) to MG during the SERS detection, and as a heat transmitter for preventing laser induced photo-bleaching, which enables the separate detection of MG and LMG in fish extracts. The combination of the Ag array and the graphene cover also produced plentiful densely and uniformly distributed hot spots, leading to analytical enhancement factor up to 3.9 × 108 and excellent reproducibility (relative standard deviation low to 5.8% for 70 runs). The proposed method was easily used for MG detection with limit of detection (LOD) as low as 2.7 × 10−11 mol L−1. The flexibility of the sensor enable it have a merit for in-field fast detection of MG residues on the scale of a living fish through a surface extraction and paste transferring manner. The developed strategy was successfully applied in the analysis of real samples, showing good prospects for both the fast inspection and quantitative detection of MG.

The detrimental influence of inhaled ozone on human respiratory system is ambiguous due to the complexity of dose response relationship between ozone and human respiratory system. This study collects ...inhaled ozone concentration and respiratory disease data from Shenzhen City to reveal the impact of ozone on respiratory diseases using the Generalized Additive Models (GAM) and Convergent Cross Mapping (CCM) method at the 95% confidence level. The result of GAM exhibits a partially significant lag effect on acute respiratory diseases in cumulative mode. Since the traditional correlation analysis is incapable of capturing causality, the CCM method is applied to examine whether the inhaled ozone affects human respiratory system. The results demonstrate that the inhaled ozone has a significant causative impact on hospitalization rates of both upper and lower respiratory diseases. Furthermore, the harmful causative effects of ozone to the human health are varied with gender and age. Females are more susceptible to inhaled ozone than males, probably because of the estrogen levels and the differential regulation of lung immune response. Adults are more sensitive to ozone exposure than children, potentially due to the fact that children need longer time to react to ozone stress than adults, and the elderly are more tolerant than adults and children, which may be related to pulmonary hypofunction of the elderly while has little correlation with ozone exposure.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become the most common cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. Due to the growing economic burden of NAFLD on public health, it has become an emergent ...target for clinical intervention. DUSP12 is a member of the dual specificity phosphatase (DUSP) family, which plays important roles in brown adipocyte differentiation, microbial infection, and cardiac hypertrophy. However, the role of DUSP12 in NAFLD has yet to be clarified. Here, we reveal that DUSP12 protects against hepatic steatosis and inflammation in L02 cells after palmitic acid/oleic acid treatment. We demonstrate that hepatocyte specific DUSP12‐deficient mice exhibit high‐fat diet (HFD)–induced and high‐fat high‐cholesterol diet–induced hyperinsulinemia and liver steatosis and decreased insulin sensitivity. Consistently, DUSP12 overexpression in hepatocyte could reduce HFD‐induced hepatic steatosis, insulin resistance, and inflammation. At the molecular level, steatosis in the absence of DUSP12 was characterized by elevated apoptosis signal‐regulating kinase 1 (ASK1), which mediates the mitogen‐activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway and hepatic metabolism. DUSP12 physically binds to ASK1, promotes its dephosphorylation, and inhibits its action on ASK1‐related proteins, JUN N‐terminal kinase, and p38 MAPK in order to inhibit lipogenesis under high‐fat conditions. Conclusion: DUSP12 acts as a positive regulator in hepatic steatosis and offers potential therapeutic opportunities for NAFLD.
A 12‐week feeding trial was performed to determine the dietary copper (Cu) requirement of postlarval coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch). The postlarvae were reared on six experimental diets ...containing either 0.4, 1.9, 3.8, 5.6, 7.6 or 9.1 mg Cu/kg, provided as copper sulphate pentahydrate (CuSO4·5H2O). The highest specific growth rate (SGR) and condition factor (CF) were observed in fish fed with 5.6 mg Cu/kg diet, which was significantly higher (p < .05) than the 0.4 mg Cu/kg treatment. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) showed an inverse trend with SGR. Whole‐body lipid was significantly increased (p < .05) with dietary Cu concentration up to 5.6 mg/kg and decreased thereafter. Fish fed with 9.1 mg Cu/kg diet exhibited the highest Cu concentrations in vertebrae and whole body. The total hepatic superoxide dismutase (T‐SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities were positively affected by the dietary Cu concentration up to 5.6 and 7.6 mg/kg respectively. The lowest hepatic malondialdehyde (MDA) content was found in 5.6 mg/kg treatment. Hepatic lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and hepatic lipase (HL) contents significantly decreased (p < .05) with increasing Cu level up to 5.6 mg/kg and then levelled off. Analyses based on the SGR, Cu concentrations in whole body and vertebrae, the optimal dietary Cu requirements for postlarval coho salmon were estimated to be 5.1, 5.5 and 5.2 mg/kg respectively.
Recently, hepatitis B core-related antigen (HBcrAg) has been suggested as an additional marker of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. This study aimed to investigate whether serum quantitative HBcrAg ...(qHBcrAg) was a satisfactory surrogate marker of intrahepatic covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA). A total of 139 patients with liver biopsy were enrolled, consisting of 59 patients in immune tolerance (IT) phase, 52 patients in immune clearance (IC) phase, 18 patients in low-replication (LR) phase, and 10 patients in reactivation phase. All patients in IC phase have received entecavir (ETV) therapy, and 32 of them undergone a second liver biopsy at 24 months. Among those patients, qHBcrAg was strongly correlated with intrahepatic cccDNA, which is superior to that of qHBsAg and HBV DNA. And similar findings were also observed in patients in IT, IC, LR and reactivation phases. Among the 32 ETV-treated patients with a second liver biopsy in IC phase, the decline of intrahepatic cccDNA was accompanied by changes in both qHBcrAg and qHBsAg. However, as compared to qHBsAg, the change of qHBcrAg was more strongly associated with intrahepatic cccDNA-decline. In summary, serum qHBcrAg should be a satisfactory surrogate of intrahepatic HBV cccDNA in CHB patients.
Vacuolar sorting protein 35 (VPS35), a critical component of retromer, is essential for selective endosome-to-Golgi retrieval of membrane proteins. It is highly expressed in microglial cells, in ...addition to neurons. We have previously demonstrated microglial VPS35's functions in preventing hippocampal, but not cortical, microglial activation, and in promoting adult hippocampal neurogenesis. However, microglial VPS35's role in the cortex in response to ischemic stroke remains largely unclear.
We used mice with VPS35 cKO (conditional knockout) in microglial cells and examined and compared their responses to ischemic stroke with control mice. The brain damage, cell death, changes in glial cells and gene expression, and sensorimotor deficits were assessed by a combination of immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence staining, RT-PCR, Western blot, and neurological functional behavior tests.
We found that microglial VPS35 loss results in an increase of anti-inflammatory microglia in mouse cortex after ischemic stroke. The ischemic stroke-induced brain injury phenotypes, including brain damage, neuronal death, and sensorimotor deficits, were all attenuated by microglial VPS35-deficiency. Further analysis of protein expression changes revealed a reduction in CX3CR1 (CX3C chemokine receptor 1) in microglial VPS35-deficient cortex after ischemic stroke, implicating CX3CR1 as a potential cargo of VPS35 in this event.
Together, these results reveal an unrecognized function of microglial VPS35 in enhancing ischemic brain injury-induced inflammatory microglia, but suppressing the injury-induced anti-inflammatory microglia. Consequently, microglial VPS35 cKO mice exhibit attenuation of ischemic brain injury response.
In early January 2012, the Longjiang River was subjected to a serious cadmium (Cd) pollution accident, which led to negatively environmental and social impacts. A series of measures of emergency ...treatment were subsequently taken to reduce water Cd level. However, little information was available about the change of Cd level in environmental matrices and long-term effect of this pollution accident to aquatic ecosystem. Thus, this study investigated the distribution of Cd in water and sediment of this river for two years since pollution accident, as well as assessed its ecological risk to aquatic ecosystem of Longjiang River. The results showed that it was efficient for taking emergency treatment measures to decrease water Cd concentration to below the threshold value of national drinking water quality standard of China. There was high risk (HQ > 1) to aquatic ecosystem in some of reaches between February and July 2012, but low or no risk (HQ < 1) between December 2012 to December 2013. Cd concentration in sediment in polluted reaches increased after pollution accident and emergency treatments in 2012, but decreased in 2013. During flood period, the sediment containing high concentration of Cd in Longjiang River was migrated to downstream Liujiang River. Cd content in sediment was reduced to background level after two years of the pollution accident occurrence. The study provides basic information about Cd levels in different media after pollution accident, which is helpful in evaluating the effectiveness of emergency treatments and the variation of ecological risk, as well as in conducting water management and conservation.

Moyamoya-like vasculopathy, the “puff of smoke”-like small vessels in the brain, is initially identified in patients with Moyamoya disease (MMD), a rare cerebrovascular disease, and later found in ...patients with various types of neurological conditions, including Down syndrome, Stroke, and vascular dementia. It is thus of interest to understand how this vasculopathy is developed. Here, we provided evidence for cortical astrocytic neogenin (NEO1) deficiency to be a risk factor for its development. NEO1, a member of deleted in colorectal cancer (DCC) family netrin receptors, was reduced in brain samples of patients with MMD. Astrocytic Neo1-loss resulted in an increase of small blood vessels (BVs) selectively in the cortex. These BVs were dysfunctional, with leaky blood-brain barrier (BBB), thin arteries, and accelerated hyperplasia in veins and capillaries, resembled to the features of moyamoya-like vasculopathy. Additionally, we found that both MMD patient and Neo1 mutant mice exhibited altered gene expression in their cortex in proteins critical for not only angiogenesis e.g., an increase in vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGFa), but also axon guidance (e.g., netrin family proteins) and inflammation. In aggregates, these results suggest a critical role of astrocytic NEO1-loss in the development of Moyamoya-like vasculopathy, providing a mouse model for investigating mechanisms of Moyamoya-like vasculopathy.
Background and Aims
NAFLD is considered as the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome, which includes insulin resistance, obesity and hyperlipidemia. NASH is a progressive stage of NAFLD ...with severe hepatic steatosis, hepatocyte death, inflammation, and fibrosis. Currently, no pharmacological interventions specifically tailored for NASH are approved. Ovarian tumor domain, ubiquitin aldehyde binding 1 (OTUB1), the founding member of deubiquitinases, regulates many metabolism‐associated signaling pathways. However, the role of OTUB1 in NASH is unclarified.
Methods and Results
We demonstrated that mice with Otub1 deficiency exhibited aggravated high‐fat diet–induced and high‐fat high‐cholesterol (HFHC) diet–induced hyperinsulinemia and liver steatosis. Notably, hepatocyte‐specific overexpression of Otub1 markedly alleviated HFHC diet–induced hepatic steatosis, inflammatory responses, and liver fibrosis. Mechanistically, we identified apoptosis signal–regulating kinase 1 (ASK1) as a key candidate target of OTUB1 through RNA‐sequencing analysis and immunoblot analysis. Through immunoprecipitation–mass spectrometry analysis, we further found that OTUB1 directly bound to tumor necrosis factor receptor–associated factor 6 (TRAF6) and suppressed its lysine 63–linked polyubiquitination, thus inhibiting the activation of ASK1 and its downstream pathway.
Conclusions
OTUB1 is a key suppressor of NASH that inhibits polyubiquitinations of TRAF6 and attenuated TRAF6‐mediated ASK1 activation. Targeting the OTUB1‐TRAF6‐ASK1 axis may be a promising therapeutic strategy for NASH.
