In this study, the convergence of non-linear extended state observer (ESO) for a class of multi-input multi-output non-linear systems with uncertainty is studied. The unknown part that comes from ...either the system itself or the external disturbance is considered as an augmented state. The state variable and augmented state are estimated simultaneously through the ESO. It is shown that with the pertinent choice of non-linear functions for observer, the error between the state and observer can be as small as desired when the high-gain tuning parameter is sufficiently small. Members of the genus Aeromonas are opportunistic pathogen of a variety of aquatic animals that exhibits multidrug resistance, phenotypes, virulence genes and virulence. The present study described ...the species distribution and the potential pathogenicity of Aeromonas isolated from healthy Northern snakehead (Channa argus) in China. Molecular identification revealed that A. veronii biovar veronii (69/167; 41·3%) and A. hydrophila (41/167; 24·6%) were the most common species found in Northern snakehead intestine based on sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and DNA gyrase subunit B protein. The distribution of seven virulence factors including aer (84·4%), act (80·8%), ser (40·1%), Aha (27·5%), lip (23·4%), exu (15·0%) and LuxS (12·6%) were determined exclusively in Aeromonas isolates. All the seven virulence genes were present in 9·6% (16/167), among which 11 strains were identified as A. veronii biovar veronii. For the strains harbouring seven virulence genes, the 50% lethal doses (LD50) of isolates were lower compared to the isolates carrying two virulence genes. The challenge tests revealed that isolate W31 had the lowest lethal dose, causing 50% mortality at 4·5 × 103 colony‐forming units (CFU) per ml. Furthermore, histopathology of Northern snakehead infected with Aeromonas strains showed necrosis and congestion in liver, spleen and kidney and also damage to the intestine. This study confirms that the Aeromonas strains isolated from healthy Northern snakehead may be a cause of concern for public health.

With mycobacteriosis increasing, the study of non-tuberculous mycobacteria is imperative for clinical therapy and management. Nontuberculous mycobacteria are naturally resistant to most ...anti-tuberculosis drugs. Accordingly, it is important to decipher the biology of the novel non-tuberculous mycobacteria through complete genomic analysis of novel pathogenic mycobacteria. We describe Mycobacterium sinense JDM601, a novel, slow-growing mycobacterium of the Mycobacterium terrae complex resistant to nine antibiotics, by clinical presentation, cultural and biochemical characteristics, minimal inhibitory concentrations, and genome-sequencing analysis. JDM601 is closest to Mycobacterium nonchromogenicum according to mycolic acid composition, but closest to Mycobacterium algericum sp. nov according to 16S rDNA. JDM601 is resistant to isoniazid, streptomycin, rifampin, euteropas, protionamide, capromycin, ciprofloxacin, amikacin and levofloxacin but not ethambutol. The clinical information, mycolic acid composition, and virulence genes indicate that JDM601 is an opportunistic pathogen.
Background
Pomegranate peels have been widely used to treat diarrhea in China. The antidiarrheal activities of aqueous extracts of pomegranate peels have been evaluated. However, there have not been ...any bioactivity‐guided fractionation studies on the antidiarrheal effect to identify the bioactive components of the extract.
Methods
Bioactivity‐guided fractionation of an aqueous extract of pomegranate peels was performed using different solvents of increasing polarity, generating fractions dissolved in ethyl acetate, n‐butyl alcohol, and the residual fraction. The principal chemical composition of the active fraction was analyzed by HPLC/ESI‐MS.
Key Results
Fecal frequencies revealed that only the ethyl acetate fraction possessed significant antidiarrheal activity. Furthermore, administration of the ethyl acetate fraction at 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg significantly reduced gastrointestinal transit in charcoal meal tests in mice. It also significantly inhibited castor oil‐induced enteropooling compared to control animals. Histopathological analysis revealed that small intestine lesions of mice treated with the ethyl acetate fraction were alleviated compared to those in mice treated with castor oil. The ethyl acetate fraction was found to be composed mainly of punicalagin, corilagin, and ellagic acid, and a combination of these compounds could mediate the antidiarrheal activities.
Conclusion and Inferences
Our study describes the protective effects of pomegranate peels against castor oil‐induced diarrhea. The findings showed that the ethyl acetate fraction was the active fraction of pomegranate peels, of which punicalagin, corilagin, and ellagic acid were responsible for the antidiarrheal effect of aqueous extracts.
The antidiarrheal activities of aqueous extracts of pomegranate peels have been evaluated. Avermectins are major antiparasitic agents used commercially in animal health, agriculture and human infections. To improve the fermentation efficiency of avermectins, for the first time a plasma jet ...generated by a novel atmospheric pressure glow discharge (APGD) was employed to generate mutations in Streptomyces avermitilis. The APGD plasma jet, driven by a radio frequency (RF) power supply with water-cooled and bare-metallic electrodes, was used as a new mutation method to treat the spores of S. avermitilis. The plasma jet yielded high total (over 30%) and positive (about 21%) mutation rates on S. avermitilis, and a mutated strain, designated as G1-1 with high productivity of avermectin B1a and genetic stability, was obtained. Because of the low jet temperature, the high concentrations of the chemically reactive species and the flexibility of its operation, the RF APGD plasma jet has a strong mutagenic effect on S. avermitilis. This is a proof-of-concept study for the use of an RF APGD plasma jet for inducing mutations in microbes. We have shown that the RF APGD plasma jet could be developed as a promising and convenient mutation tool for the fermentation industry and for use in biotechnology research.
The short-range ordered but long-range disordered structure of metallic glasses yields strong structural and dynamic heterogeneities. Stress relaxation is a technique to trace the evolution of stress ...in response to a fixed strain, which reflects the dynamic features phenomenologically described by the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts (KWW) equation. The KWW equation describes a broad distribution of relaxation times with a small number of empirical parameters, but it does not arise from a particular physically motivated mechanistic picture. Here we report an anomalous two-stage stress relaxation behavior in a Cu sub(46) Zr sub(46) Al sub(8) metallic glass over a wide temperature range and generalize the findings in other compositions. Thermodynamic analysis identifies two categories of processes: a fast stress-driven event with large activation volume and a slow thermally activated event with small activation volume, which synthetically dominates the stress relaxation dynamics. Discrete analyses rationalize the transition mechanism induced by stress and explain the anomalous variation of the KWW characteristic time with temperature. Atomistic simulations reveal that the stress-driven event involves virtually instantaneous short-range atomic rearrangement, while the thermally activated event is the percolation of the fast event accommodated by the long-range atomic diffusion. The insights may clarify the underlying physical mechanisms behind the phenomenological description and shed light on correlating the hierarchical dynamics and structural heterogeneity of amorphous solids.
Solution-processed organo-lead halide perovskites are produced with sharp, color-pure electroluminescence that can be tuned from blue to green region of visible spectrum (425–570 nm). This was ...accomplished by controlling the halide composition of CH3NH3Pb(Br x Cl1–x )3 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 perovskites. The bandgap and lattice parameters change monotonically with composition. The films possess remarkably sharp band edges and a clean bandgap, with a single optically active phase. These chloride–bromide perovskites can potentially be used in optoelectronic devices like solar cells and light emitting diodes (LEDs). Here we demonstrate high color-purity, tunable LEDs with narrow emission full width at half maxima (FWHM) and low turn on voltages using thin-films of these perovskite materials, including a blue CH3NH3PbCl3 perovskite LED with a narrow emission FWHM of 5 nm.
We aimed to investigate the efficacy and tolerability of sorafenib combined with cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in patients with recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).
It was a ...Simon two-stage designed trial. Chemotherapy-naive patients with recurrent or metastatic disease were enrolled. The regimen was sorafenib 400 mg orally b.i.d., cisplatin 80 mg/m2 i.v. day 1, and 5-FU 1000 mg/m2/day CIV for 4 days, repeated every 21 days. After a maximum of six cycles of chemotherapy, patients received maintenance of sorafenib.
In total, 54 patients were enrolled. The objective response rate reached 77.8%, including 1 complete response and 41 partial responses. The median progression-free survival was 7.2 months (95% CI 6.8–8.4 months), and the median overall survival was 11.8 months (95% CI 10.6–18.7 months). Major toxic effects included hand–foot skin reaction, myelosuppression, and gastrointestinal (GI) reaction. The incidence of hemorrhage was 22.2%, and one patient with liver metastases died of GI bleeding. Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography was carried out in a subset of patients with liver metastases.
Combination of sorafenib, cisplatin (80 mg/m2) and 5-FU (3000 mg/m2) was tolerable and feasible in recurrent or metastatic NPC. Further randomized trials to compare sorafenib plus cisplatin and 5-FU with standard dose of cisplatin plus 5-FU in NPC are warranted.
We report a successful observation of pressure-induced superconductivity in a topological compound Bi 2 Te 3 with T c of ∼3 K between 3 to 6 GPa. The combined high-pressure structure investigations ...with synchrotron radiation indicated that the superconductivity occurred at the ambient phase without crystal structure phase transition. The Hall effects measurements indicated the hole-type carrier in the pressure-induced superconducting Bi 2 Te 3 single crystal. Consequently, the first-principles calculations based on the structural data obtained by the Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction patterns at high pressure showed that the electronic structure under pressure remained topologically nontrivial. The results suggested that topological superconductivity can be realized in Bi 2 Te 3 due to the proximity effect between superconducting bulk states and Dirac-type surface states. We also discuss the possibility that the bulk state could be a topological superconductor.
Abstract Previous studies have demonstrated that pioglitazone (Piog), a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) agonist, inhibits ischemia-induced brain injury. Piog has also been ...shown to exert anti-inflammatory effects by attenuation of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activation after myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury. Because NF-κB is known to play a major role in the pathophysiology of brain ischemia, the present study was undertaken to elucidate whether pioglitazone attenuates ischemic neuronal damage through PPARγ-mediated suppression of NF-κB apoptotic signaling pathway. Permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO) model was induced by using an intraluminal filament technique in rats. Piog was administrated i.p. twice (24 h before and at the time of ischemia insult) or once (10 min after ischemia). The neuroprotection of Piog was analyzed by assessing neurological deficits, infarction volume and morphological changes. The inhibition of NF-κB signaling pathway by Piog was evaluated by detecting the nuclear translocation of NF-κB p65 with immunohistochemistry and its target gene p53 by real-time PCR, and the expression of phospholated NF-κB p65 (p- NF-κB p65) in primary cultured neurons and the protein levels of IκBα and p-ERK in the ischemic cortex or striatum with Western blotting analysis. The contribution of a PPARγ mechanism to Piog's inhibitory effects on NF-κB and neuroprotection was evaluated by pretreatment with the PPARγ irreversible antagonist GW9662. In vitro ischemia in cultured primary neurons was induced by the oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) and the protective effect of Piog on cultured neurons was measured by lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay. Piog (0.5, 1, 2 mg/kg) reduced infarction volume, and improved morphological changes and motor deficits. Piog markedly up-regulated the protein levels of IκBα or p-ERK 6 h or 12 h after ischemia. Piog reduced the nuclear translocation of NF-κB p65 in the ischemic cortical cells and repressed the expression of p53 12 h after ischemia. Pre-treatment with GW9662 blocked Piog-elicited reduction in infarction volume, the increase in protein levels of IκBα and p-ERK, the reduction in the nuclear translocation of NF-κB subunit p65 and the repression of p53 mRNA expression. In addition, Piog attenuated the OGD-induced neuronal damage and inhibited the OGD-induced increases in p- NF-κB p65 in neurons. The present findings suggest that Piog's neuroprotection appears to be associated with PPARγ-mediated suppression of NF-κB signaling pathway.
