Neuroimmune gene induction is involved in many brain pathologies including addiction. Although increased expression of proinflammatory cytokines has been found in ethanol-treated mouse brain and rat ...brain slice cultures as well as in post-mortem human alcoholic brain, the mechanisms remain elusive. High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) protein is a nuclear protein that has endogenous cytokine-like activity. We previously found increased HMGB1 in post-mortem alcoholic human brain as well as in ethanol treated mice and rat brain slice cultures. The present study investigated the mechanisms for ethanol-induced release of HMGB1 and neuroimmune activation in a model of rat hippocampal-entorhinal cortex (HEC) brain slice cultures. Ethanol exposure triggered dose-dependent HMGB1 release, predominantly from neuronal cells. Inhibitors of histone deacetylases (HDACs) promoted nucleocytoplasmic mobilization of HDAC1/4 and HMGB1 resulting in increased total HMGB1 and acetylated HMGB1 release. Similarly, ethanol treatment was found to induce the translocation of HDAC1/4 and HMGB1 proteins from nuclear to cytosolic fractions. Furthermore, ethanol treatment reduced HDAC1/4 mRNA and increased acetylated HMGB1 release into the media. These results suggest decreased HDAC activity may be critical in regulating acetylated HMGB1 release from neurons in response to ethanol. Ethanol and HMGB1 treatment increased mRNA expression of proinflammatory cytokines TNFα and IL-1β as well as toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). Targeting HMGB1 or microglial TLR4 by using siRNAs to HMGB1 and TLR4, HMGB1 neutralizing antibody, HMGB1 inhibitor glycyrrhizin and TLR4 antagonist as well as inhibitor of microglial activation all blocked ethanol-induced expression of proinflammatory cytokines TNFα and IL-1β. These results support the hypothesis that ethanol alters HDACs that regulate HMGB1 release and that danger signal HMGB1 as endogenous ligand for TLR4 mediates ethanol-induced brain neuroimmune signaling through activation of microglial TLR4. These findings provide new therapeutic targets for brain neuroimmune activation and alcoholism.
The current outbreak of a novel severe acute respiratory syndrome‐like coronavirus, 2019_nCoV (now named SARS‐CoV‐2), illustrated difficulties in identifying a novel coronavirus and its natural host, ...as the coding sequences of various Betacoronavirus species can be highly diverse. By means of whole‐genome sequence comparisons, we demonstrate that the noncoding flanks of the viral genome can be used to correctly separate the recognized four betacoronavirus subspecies. The conservation would be sufficient to define target sequences that could, in theory, classify novel virus species into their subspecies. Only 253 upstream noncoding sequences of Sarbecovirus are sufficient to identify genetic similarities between species of this subgenus. Furthermore, it was investigated which bat species have commercial value in China, and would thus likely be handled for trading purposes. A number of coronavirus genomes have been published that were obtained from such bat species. These bats are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and their handling poses a potential risk to cause zoonotic coronavirus epidemics.

The limits of agreement (LoA) method proposed by Bland and Altman has become a standard for assessing agreement between different methods measuring the same quantity. Virtually, all method comparison ...studies have reported only point estimates of LoA due largely to the lack of simple confidence interval procedures. In this article, we address confidence interval estimation for LoA when multiple measurements per individual are available. Separate procedures are proposed for situations when the underlying true value of the measured quantity is assumed changing and when it is perceived as stable. A fixed number of replicates per individual is not needed for the procedures to work. As shown by the worked examples, the construction of these confidence intervals requires only quantiles from the standard normal and chi-square distributions. Simulation results show the proposed procedures perform well. A SAS macro implementing the methods is available on the publisher's website.
Iridium-based electrocatalysts remain the only practical anode catalysts for proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis, due to their excellent stability under acidic oxygen evolution reaction ...(OER), but are greatly limited by their high cost and low reserves. Here, we report a nickel-stabilized, ruthenium dioxide (Ni-RuO
) catalyst, a promising alternative to iridium, with high activity and durability in acidic OER for PEM water electrolysis. While pristine RuO
showed poor acidic OER stability and degraded within a short period of continuous operation, the incorporation of Ni greatly stabilized the RuO
lattice and extended its durability by more than one order of magnitude. When applied to the anode of a PEM water electrolyser, our Ni-RuO
catalyst demonstrated >1,000 h stability under a water-splitting current of 200 mA cm
, suggesting potential for practical applications. Density functional theory studies, coupled with operando differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy analysis, confirmed the adsorbate-evolving mechanism on Ni-RuO

Abstract
Copper catalysts modified with tin have been demonstrated to be selective for the electroreduction of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide. However, such catalysts require the precise control ...of tin loading amount. Here, we develop a copper/tin-oxide catalyst with dominant tin oxide surface being formed via a spontaneous exchange reaction between sputtered tin and copper oxide. Even though the surface of this catalyst is tin-rich, it achieves an excellent performance towards carbon monoxide production in a flow cell. This contrasts with copper/tin-oxide prepared via atomic layer deposition since it yields selectivity towards carbon monoxide only on a copper-rich surface. Mechanism studies reveal that the tin sites on the tin-rich copper/tin-oxide surface achieve a suitable binding with adsorbed carbon monoxide under the presence of copper. Powered by a triple-junction solar cell, the copper/tin-oxide based electrolyzer sets a new benchmark solar-to-chemical energy conversion efficiency of 19.9 percent with a Faradaic efficiency of 98.9 percent towards carbon monoxide under simulated standard air mass 1.5 global illumination.
Iron (Fe)-modified biochar (FeBC) has been developed to remove hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from groundwater and is suitable for use in permeable reactive barriers (PRBs). However, Cr(VI) removal ...behavior and chemical processes in FeBC-based PRBs are not fully understood, and the potential for Fe release has not been addressed. In this study, three FeBC-based PRBs were assessed in column experiments for 563 days with respect to their ability to remove Cr(VI). Bilayer column filled with FeBC+limestone and BC+limestone in two separate layers (FeBC_Ca_BC) showed the best performance in terms of Cr(VI) removal with a low treatment cost. The corrosion of FeBC was mainly related to pH and Cr(VI) concentration rather than flow rate. Leached Fe was attenuated by BC and limestone and reutilized in FeBC_Ca_BC. Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) and then adsorbed or precipitated on the biochars. Cr and Fe formed inner-sphere complexes and then transformed from double corner sharing to edge sharing. During the reaction, Cr penetrated from the surface to the interior of the biochars and became a more stable species. This study provides evidence of the effectiveness of a new combination of biochars for Cr(VI) removal and insights into the reaction mechanisms.

Percolation and synchronization are two phase transitions that have been extensively studied since already long ago. A classic result is that, in the vast majority of cases, these transitions are of ...the second-order type, i.e. continuous and reversible. Recently, however, explosive phenomena have been reported in complex networks’ structure and dynamics, which rather remind first-order (discontinuous and irreversible) transitions. Explosive percolation, which was discovered in 2009, corresponds to an abrupt change in the network’s structure, and explosive synchronization (which is concerned, instead, with the abrupt emergence of a collective state in the networks’ dynamics) was studied as early as the first models of globally coupled phase oscillators were taken into consideration. The two phenomena have stimulated investigations and debates, attracting attention in many relevant fields. So far, various substantial contributions and progresses (including experimental verifications) have been made, which have provided insights on what structural and dynamical properties are needed for inducing such abrupt transformations, as well as have greatly enhanced our understanding of phase transitions in networked systems. Our intention is to offer here a monographic review on the main-stream literature, with the twofold aim of summarizing the existing results and pointing out possible directions for future research.

Characterization of the spatial distribution and speciation of iron (Fe) in Fe-modified biochars is critical for understanding the mechanisms of contaminant removal. Here, synchrotron-based techniques were applied to characterize the spatial distribution and speciation of Fe in biochars modified by FeCl3 or FeSO4 and pyrolyzed at 300, 600, and 900 °C, respectively. Confocal micro-X-ray fluorescence imaging (CMXRFI) results indicated Fe, sulfur (S), and chlorine (Cl) diffused into the basic porous structure of the biochars and aggregated to the surface as pyrolysis temperature increased. Fe K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra revealed maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) as the primary Fe species in the modified biochars and Fe(0) was observed when pyrolyzed at 600 or 900 °C. Unmodified and FeCl3-modified biochars pyrolyzed at 900 °C were evaluated in the removal of arsenate (As(V)), arsenite (As(III)), hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and Hg(II) from aqueous solution and Fe-modification enhanced the removal efficiency from 42.0%, 62.5%, 19.6%, and 97.0%, respectively, to all 99.9%. X-ray absorption spectroscopy results indicate both adsorption and redox reaction contributed to the removal mechanisms. The present study provides a prospective and sustainable material and offers information relevant to tailoring Fe-modified biochars to specific environmental applications.
Guangzhou, one of China's megacities, is beset with frequent occurrence of high-concentration ozone events. In this study, online instruments were used to simultaneously monitor ozone, nitrogen ...oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at GPACS (the Guangzhou Panyu Atmospheric Composition Station) of the China Meteorological Administration, from June 2011 to May 2012, in order to determine their characteristics, the effect of VOCs on ozone photochemical production and the relationship between VOC / NOx ratio and ozone formation. The results showed that during the observation period, the seasonal variation of ozone concentration was lower in spring and winter compared to summer and autumn, which is opposite that for VOCs and NOx. In terms of VOCs, aromatics had the largest ozone formation potential, among which toluene, xylenes, ethylbenzene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene were the most important species, with a total contribution of about 44%. As the VOC / NOx ratios were very high during high-concentration ozone events that occur all year round, we speculate ozone production was likely to be NOx-limited regime (12:00-16:00 LT) in Guangzhou. Further investigation based on numerical models is needed in the future to obtain more detailed and robust conclusions.
A novel two-step intercritical annealing process was designed for an ultra-low carbon medium manganese steel plate. Excellent mechanical properties with yield strength of 590MPa, tensile strength of ...840MPa, total elongation of 28.5% and high impact energy of 106J at −80°C were obtained. The microstructure comprised of ultra-fine grained ferrite and retained austenite together with a small amount of martensite after the two-step intercritical annealing. Both lath-like and blocky retained austenite with volume fraction of ~25% and relatively poor stability were obtained. The submicron-sized lath-like retained austenite exhibited Nishiyama-Wassermann (N-W) orientation relationship with the neighboring martensitic ferrite lath. The fine grain size played a crucial role in stabilizing austenite during phase transformation by significantly lowering Ms temperature and increasing the elastic strain energy. The overall stability of retained austenite during deformation was considered to be mainly governed by the chemical composition of the studied steel. The mechanism of toughening was elucidated. The superior low-temperature toughness was associated with TRIP effect of metastable retained austenite, which relieved the local stress concentration, enhanced the ability to plastic deformation and delayed the initiation and propagation of microcracks.
