Calendula officinalis (pot marigold), a medicinal ornamental plant belonging to the Asteraceae family, has various medicinal activities such as anticancer, antimicrobial, antioxidant and antitumor. ...The retention time of quercetin (6.445 min), kaempferol (11.246 min), caffeic acid (2.333 min), beta carotene (9.614 min) standards, which were planned to be analyzed by HPLC, was determined. The HPLC conditions that are most suitable for these metabolites have been determined. The amounts of quercetin, kaempferol, caffeic acid and beta carotene in the seedling leaves of these two Calendula species on the 0., 15., 30., 45., 60. days were compared. Caffeic acid and beta carotene have been detected in the leaves. However, quercetin and kaempferol compounds were not detected. It was determined that the caffeic acid and beta carotene amounts of C. officinalis species were higher than that of C. arvensis. The highest caffeic acid in both C. officinalis and C. arvensis seedlings (0.4042±0.0123 µg/g dry weight for C. officinalis, 0.1918±0.0437 µg / g dry weight for C. arvensis) and beta carotene amounts (0.8520±0.0692 µg/g dry weight for C. officinalis, 0.6389±0.0189 µg/g dry weight for C. arvensis) were determined on 60. day. In addition, it was determined that the amount of these metabolites differed according to the seedling development period.

The effects of dietary antioxidants (vitamin E (VE), vitamin C (VC), vitamin A (VA), astaxhantin (ASX), β-carotene (βC)) on the arginase activity and nitric oxide (NO) level of the hepatopancreas, ...muscle, ovarian and gills of freshwater crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) were investigated. In the investigation, 150 mg kg-1 VE, 200 mg kg-1 VC, 240 mg kg-1 VA, 200 mg kg-1 ASX and 200 mg kg-1 βC were added to experimental diets. The study was carried out for 144 days. The arginase activity in the hepatopancreas were significantly higher in the VE, VC and VA diet groups in the comparison to control (P< 0.001), but NO level was lower in all diet groups compared to the control (P< 0.001). Arginase activity and NO level in the muscle were significantly higher in the some diets groups (arginase; VE, VA, ASX, βC, NO; VC, ASX) according to control (P< 0.001). The arginase activity and NO levels in the ovarian were significantly lower in the all diet groups in the comparison to control (P< 0.001). However, no significant differences in the arginase activity and NO level in the gill were observed among diets. The arginase activity and NO level in the hepatopancreas, muscle and ovarian were changed by dietary supplement of the antioxidants.
Tatlısu istakozu (Astacus leptodactylus) rasyonuna antioksidan (vitamin E (VE), vitamin C (VC), vitamin A (VA), astaksantin (ASX), β-caroten (βC)) ilavesinin hepatopankreas, kas, ovaryum ve solungaç arginaz aktivitesi ve nitrik oksit seviyesi üzerine etkisi araştırılmıştır. Deneysel rasyonların hazırlanması için gruplara 150 mg kg-1 VE, 200 mg kg-1 VC, 240 mg kg-1 VA, 200 mg kg-1 ASX ve 200 mg kg-1 βC ilave edildi. Çalışma 144 gün sürdürüldü. Hepatopankreasdaki arginaz aktivitesi kontrol ile karşılaştırıldığında VE, VC ve VA rasyon gruplarında önemli derecede daha yüksekti (P< 0.001), fakat NO seviyesi kontrol ile karşılaştırılan bütün rasyon gruplarında daha düşüktü (P< 0.001). Kasdaki arginaz aktivitesi ve NO seviyesi bazı rasyon gruplarında (arginaz; VE, VA, ASX, βC, NO; VC, ASX) önemli derecede daha yüksekti (P< 0.001). Ovaryumdaki arginaz aktivitesi ve NO seviyesi kontrol ile karşılaştırıldığında bütün rasyon gruplarında önemli derecede daha düşüktü (P< 0.001). Ayrıca solungaçlardaki arginaz aktivitesi ve NO seviyesinde rasyonlar arasında hiçbir farklılık görülmedi. Hepatopankreas, kas ve ovaryumdaki arginaz aktivitesi ve NO seviyesi antioksidanların rasyona ilave edilmesi ile değişti.

Alkylpehnol polyethoxylates (APEOs) and the derivatives of APEOs such as nonylphenol (NP) are generally used as anti-oxidants in many organic compounds including detergents, herbicides and ...pesticides. In this study, NP effects on growth, egg production and hatching in Japanese quails were investigated. Also, NP effects on plasma vitamin levels and malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined. NP does not affect body weight gain (BWG), feed consumption (FC) and feed conversion ratio for growth (FCRG) in all experimental groups in growing chicks, while it cause a significant decrease in egg production (EP) (P< 0.01). Also, the present study showed that NP concentrations, 10, 100 and 500 μg NP in ethanol (ETOH)/kg-feed, exposure cause an increase in β-Carotene, Vitamin A and MDA levels (P< 0.01). There is also significant rise in Vitamin C level induced by NP in all experimental groups (P< 0.01). In conclusion, NP has dramatic effects on EP rate and anti-oxidant system in a concentration dependent manner in Japanese quails.
Alkilfenol polietoksilatlar (AFEO) bileşikleri ve nonilfenol (NF) gibi AFEO türevleri, deterjanlar, ot ve böcek ilaçlarını da içeren pek çok organik bileşikte, genellikle antioksidan olarak kullanılmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, Japon Bıldırcınlarında büyüme, yumurta üretimi ve kuluçka randımanı üzerine nonilfenol etkileri araştırıldı. Ayrıca, nonilfenolün plazma vitamin düzeyleri ve malondialdehit (MDA) üzerine etkileri belirlendi. NF büyüme dönemindeki tüm deney guruplarında canlı ağırlık artışı (BWG) ve yemden yararlanma oranını (FCRG) etkilemezken, yumurta üretiminde önemli bir azalmaya neden olmaktadır (P< 0.01). Ayrıca, bu çalışmada etanolde çözünen nonilfenolün 10, 100 ve 500 μg NP/kg-yem konsantrasyonları β-Karoten, Vitamin A ve MDA düzeylerinde bir artışa sebep olduğu (P< 0.01) gözlenmiştir. Tüm deney gruplarındaki NF, Vitamin C düzeyinde önemli bir artışa neden olmaktadır. Sonuç olarak, konsantrasyona bağlı olarak NF Japon bıldırcınlarında EP oranını ve antioksidan sistemi dramatik bir şekilde etkilemektedir.
We determined serum levels of alpha tocopherol, beta carotene, and ascorbic acid and lipid peroxidation products (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances--TBARS) in 14 children during an asthma ...attack and remission. Twelve healthy children served as controls. All antioxidant vitamins were significantly lower in asthmatics at remission compared to controls. Comparison of attack and remission periods in asthmatic patients failed to reveal any difference except in beta carotene (p = 0.03). The levels of all three vitamins correlated very significantly with each other (r = 0.89-0.95). TBARS levels were significantly higher at asthma attack compared to remission (p = 0.001). No correlation was observed between the antioxidant vitamins and lipid peroxidation products. This study shows that antioxidant vitamins are decreased in sera of asthmatic patients even during the asymptomatic periods of the disease, and that this decrease is not totally dependent on the increased oxidative stress as reflected by lipid peroxidation products. The role of antioxidant vitamins in prevention and/or treatment of asthma remains to be determined.

The present study was conducted to investigate the variations in blood serum and hepatic levels of vitamin A and beta- carotene in Ghezel sheep throughout the year. From 1000 sheep aged 1-5 years, ...blood and liver samples were collected before and after slaughter. The levels of vitamin A and beta-carotene in both samples were determined spectrophotometrically. The results showed significant differences between summer and winter values (P<0.05), but no differences were found between the sexes (P> 0.05). There were significant correlations between the vitamin A levels in serum and the liver (P<0.05). Due to low levels of vitamin A and beta-carotene in Ghezel sheep during the winter, supplementary feeding of vitamin A is recommended during this season.

This study was performed to investigate the serum levels of vitamins in yearling rams with growth failure. A total of 70 yearling rams of Akkaraman breed, 50 of which were classified as ...growth-failure with an average body weight of 37.30 ± 1.1 kg (test) and the remaining 20 were classified as normal with an average body weight of 67.80 ± 2.2 kg (control), were included in the study. There were significant differences between the yearling rams with and without growth failure in terms of serum levels of vitamin C, β-carotene, and vitamins A and E (P < 0.001, P < 0.01, P < 0.001, and P < 0.001, respectively). The levels of all analyzed vitamins were lower compared to controls in yearling rams with growth failure.
Bu çalışmada gelişme yetersizliği görülen toklularda serum vitamin düzeyleri incelendi. Toplam 70 Akkaraman tokludan ortalama canlı ağırlığı 37,30 ± 1,1 kg olan 50 toklu deneme grubunu, ortalama canlı ağırlığı 67,80 ± 2,2 kg olan 20 toklu ise kontrol grubunu oluşturdu. Gelişme yetersizliği görülen tokluların serum vitamin düzeyleri sağlıklı toklulara göre düşük bulunurken, vitamin C, β-karoten, vitamin A ve E düzeyleri arasında önemli farklılıklar saptandı (sırasıyla, P < 0,001, P < 0,01, P < 0,001 ve P < 0,001).
Bu araştırmada, çiftleşme öncesinde ve gebelik süresince koyunlara vitamin A ve β-karoten enjeksiyonu yapılmasının plazma vitamin E düzeyleri ile birlikte ertrosit glutatyon peraksidaz (GSH-Px) ...aktiviteleri üzerine etkilerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla sağlıklı 4-5 yaşlarında ve ortalama 57 kg ağırlığında 32 Tuj ırkı koyun ile 4 adet koç kullanıldı. Tüm koyunların östrusu sinkronize edildi. Bu amaçla medroksiprogesteron asetat (MPA) içeren süngerlerin uygulanmasını takiben 14 gün sonra, süngerler çıkarılarak her bir koyuna 500 IU PMSG intra muskular (i.m.) olarak enjekte edildi. PMSG enjeksiyonundan 24 saat sonra her gruba bir koç katılarak koyunlarla çiftleşitirildi. ilk grup kontrol grubu olarak değerlendirildi ve Freund's adjuvant incomplete i.m. enjekte edildi. 8 mg/kg β-karoten (II. Grup), 200,000 IU vitamin A (III. Grup) ve 100,000 IU vitamin A ve 4 mg/kg β-karoten (IV. Grup) kombinasyonu 30 gün aralıklarla çiftleşmeden 15 gün önce ve gebelik süresince i.m. olarak enjekte edildi. Plasma vitamin E düzeylerini ve eritrosit GSH-Px aktivitelerini belirlemek için kan numuneleri enjeksiyonların 1. ve 15. günleri ile doğumdan sonra V. jugularis'ten alındı.
Bu çalışmada, enjeksiyonu takiben 2. ve 4. Grupların plazma vitamin E düzeylerinde gebelik süresince kontrol grubu ile karşılaştırıldığında istatistisel olarak önemli bir farklılık (P < 0,001) gözlendi. Aynı zamanda vitamin E düzeylerinin enjeksiyon zamanlarına bağlı olarak değiştiğini belirledik. Ayrıca plazma vitamin E düzeylerinin vitamin A enjeksiyonları ile çok az etkilendiğini saptadık. Eritrosit GSH-Px aktivitesi II., III., ve IV. Gruplarda kontrol grubuna göre yüksek olarak belirlendi (P < 0,001). Bu değerler β-karoten grubunda diğer gruplardan daha yüksek Sonuç olarak, vitamin A ve β-karoten enjeksiyonları ile vitamin E ve GSH-Px gibi antioksidanlarin desteklenmesi gebeliğe bağlı olarak oluşan serbest radikallerin istenmeyen etkilerini önleyebilir
The objective of research was to study the effect of vitamin A and β-carotene injections, before breeding and during pregnancy, on the levels of vitamin E in plasma and on the activity of erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in sheep. Thirty-two healthy female and four healthy male Tuj sheep, 4-5 years old and weighing approximately 57 kg each, were used. The female animals were divided into 4 groups with 8 sheep in each. The oestrus cycles of the ewes were synchronised by the application of sponges containing medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) and by the intramuscular administration of 500 IU of PMSG. Twenty-four hours after the injection of PMSG, a ram was added to each group and allowed to mate with the sheep. The first group was used as the control. 8 mg/kg of β-carotene (Group II), 200,000 IU of vitamin A (Group III) and a combination of 100,000 IU of vitamin A and 4 mg/kg of β-carotene (Group IV) were administered intramuscularly at 30-day intervals, 15 days before breeding and during pregnancy. To measure the levels of vitamin E in plasma and the activity of erythrocyte GSH-Px, blood samples were taken from the jugular vein on days 1 and 15 after injection and after the birth.
A statistically significant difference (P < 0.001) was observed during pregnancy in the levels of vitamin E in the plasma of Groups II and IV following injection in comparison with those of the control group. It was also observed that vitamin E levels changed in the treated groups in relation to the time of injection. We further determined that the levels of vitamin E in plasma were little affected by injections of vitamin A. Erythrocyte GSH-Px activity increased in Groups II, III and IV compared with that of the control group (P < 0.001). This increase was higher in the β-carotene group than in the other groups.
It was concluded that supporting aspects of the antioxidant system such as vitamin E levels and GSH-Px activity with vitamin A and β-carotene injections may prevent the undesired effects of the free radicals associated with pregnancy.
The incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE ) during childhood is low with two peaks – neonatal and adolescent age. This retrospective study is focused on clinical characteristics of VTE during ...adolescence. The main goals are to assess the most frequent inherited and acquired risk factors and to evaluate the benefit of D-dimers in diagnostics of venous thromboemblism. The data of 18 adolescents were analysed – 16 girls (88.9%), 2 boys (11.1%). In 9 patients (50%) thrombosis of the lower limb deep veins was diagnosed, six patients (33.3%) suffered from symptomatic pulmonary embolism (PE ) and 3 patients (16.7%) from thrombosis at unusual sites. One patient had an idiopathic VTE , the mean number of the inherited and acquired risk factors was 2.6. The most frequent inherited risk factor was Leiden mutation of factor V (27.8%). The most frequent acquired risk factor was oral contraception (OC ) in 12 out of 16 girls (75%).
