Despite the fact that drinking and music often share a space, the relationship between alcohol-related misbehaviour and live music has received little academic attention. Music has been demonstrated ...to influence drinking behaviour and entertainers have been observed influencing (‘soft-policing’) drunken misbehaviour by audiences. However, to date research has not given voice to those providing this musical entertainment. Are they aware of the effects they have on audiences' drinking behaviour and does this impact on performances? Our qualitative research fills this lacuna by drawing on the experiences of gigging entertainers to explore how they deal with intoxicated audiences. Interviews conducted as part of this research highlighted a lack of preparation on the part of performers for dealing with disorderly crowds and/or the unwanted attentions of drunken individuals; they usually have to learn appropriate responses ‘on the job’. Success as a gigging entertainer was felt to be only partly founded upon artistic merit, with an ability to engage the (often inebriated) public being equally important. Although none had received formal training in alcohol issues as musicians, some utilised people skills (e.g. conflict resolution techniques) acquired via other employment. The authors ask if there is a place for training in alcohol-related issues to be offered by or integrated into music curriculums.

Famously, David Lewis argued that we can avoid the apparent paradoxes of time travel by introducing a notion of personal time, which by and large follows the causal flow of the time traveler's life ...history. This paper argues that a related approach can be adapted for use by three-dimensionalists in response to Ted Sider's claim that three-dimensionalism is inconsistent with time travel. In contrast to Lewis (and others who follow him on this point), however, this paper argues that the order of events captured by so-called "personal time" should be thought of as causal, rather than temporal.

Julia Kristeva writes her work in French. Translating her work has therefore become a constant double challenge: acknowledging, first of all, her two original linguistic cultures and, secondly, ...translating someone who is, in herself, permanently double-sided, either having herself translated in French or presenting herself in her own 'otherness'. Her 'francophony' is, in itself, a blend of languages and cultures one must be aware of in order to translate her thoughts, culture and way of living which arise from the experience of being a 'foreigner' who insists on being accepted in her otherness. Springing from the specific work of translating her work, this reflection aims at clarifying some translation stalemates which occur because of the crossing of cultures and languages in her texts.
Holding the view that English absolute clauses have a multidimensional focalizing function and an empathetic effect in a specific context caused by the de-automatization of tense and phase from SFL ...perspective, this paper studies the intersubjective stylistic function of absolute clauses in Bob Dylan’s autobiography quantitatively and qualitatively. It finds an interstrata configuration across experience, semantics and absolute clauses at lexicogrammatical level. Bob Dylan, through meaning allocations between semiotic sublevel (thematic meaning level) and social, biological and physical sublevels (writing technique levels), chooses to directly reveal theme with experience directly relevant to “I” and personal development or indirectly underlie thematic meaning with experience indirectly involving "I” and personal growth. These meaning allocations also determine whether to use direct means by absolute clauses or indirect means through writing techniques at lexicogrammatical level.
