Mike Cranford is the second Ward II incumbent to announce plans to seek re-election. Longtime Councilman Ed DeFore also will ask voters to return him to his post. Elsewhere on council, Nancy White of ...Ward V and Elaine Lucas of Ward I are planning re-election campaigns. Cranford said he has not yet picked a political party banner under which to run. He is waiting to see if he will have competition for the seat, he said. Cranford served his first term on council as a Republican before he was defeated by Councilman James Timley in 1999. The special election Cranford won in March 2005 -- capturing 54 percent of the vote to defeat three other opponents -- was nonpartisan. Cranford replaced Councilman Jim Lee, who had died the year before.
Appalachian State (22-6 overall, 13-3 in SoCon) needs one win, or one UNC Greensboro loss, to wrap up first place in the SoCon's North Division. The Mountaineers will play UNC Greensboro in Boone on ...Thursday night. Ryann Abraham's blind-side swipe from Nick Aldridge with little more than four minutes left led to a length-of-court sprint for a layup that put the game away. That play was part of a 15-4 run by the Mountaineers that finished off the Catamounts. "I just focused on him because he was the guy who was making the plays," Abraham said of Aldridge. "He did a spin move, I saw the opportunity and I just thought, 'That ball is mine.'" Aldridge, a 6- 7, 230-pound post player from Ohio, said that his team was determined.
Mont Creamer, the ASU student who won a prize for his long- range shot, got a tip of the cap from Nathan Cranford, who just three weeks earlier set a school record with 10 3-pointers against ...Chattanooga. Cranford hit four straight 3s and the Mountaineers led 15-6 little more than six minutes into play. That opened things inside for Donte Minter, who scored eight straight points. Appalachian State also got 18 points off 12 turnovers by The Citadel in the first half, closed the half with a 19-0 flurry capped by a Cranford 3-pointer, diminished only slightly by Brick's heave that cut the halftime gap to 50-25.

According to Shelly Cranford, ever since Ashley Arnold joined the Bleckley County cross country team she has managed to improve on her time each year. This season, the senior finished first at the ...state meet with a time of 19:22 -- a huge leap from the year before when clocked in at 21:03. In order to go out the best, however, Arnold had to make a few slight changes. Her previous tactic at races was to start out at an even pace and eventually catch up with the rest of the field. But catching back up proved a bit more difficult, which meant Arnold needed to start with the group, stay with them and then use her burst of speed at then end for the win. Instead, Arnold ran the the 3.1-mile course in the best time of her career, crossing the finish line in 18:32. Arnold had run the course one time prior with her team, and finished in the near the 19:00 mark. But an extra edge the second time around helped her pick up the personal best time.

That resolution, from Councilman James Timley, was scheduled for discussion during Monday's ordinances and resolutions committee. But with Mike Cranford's resolution added to the mix, committee ...members voted to wait until Cranford's resolution is formally referred to a committee by the full council today so both resolutions can be considered at the same time. Similar resolutions calling for shrinking the size of city government or calling for consolidation with the Bibb County Commission have been proposed over the years, only to fail. Timley complained that Monday's tabling, suggested by Councilwoman Brenda Youmas, amounts to a strategic delay.
