As something that surrounds, extends, and presents a text to the world, the phenomenon of paratext is gaining more and more attention within the discipline of Translation Studies. This edited volume, ...with contributions by five Nordic scholars, aims to build on that attention by presenting five case studies on paratexts in translations into Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish. A special focus lies on the paratextual mechanisms at play when works from different source cultures are translated into a Nordic target context. The translated works under scrutiny belong to genres such as literary novels, non-fiction works, and religious texts, and the paratexts surveyed include footnotes, covers, blurbs, introductions, and literary reviews. The scholars represented in the volume all work in Translation Studies, or at the intersection between Translation Studies and other disciplines.
The theme of this study is the linguistic experiences of inter-Scandinavian communication. More specifically, using language portraits as a method, the study maps the linguistic experiences of two individuals who have moved from Denmark to Sweden as adults, and who now speak in a manner that generally passes as Swedish. The focus of the present study, however, is not these individuals’ acquisition of the Swedish language but their experiences of friction between differing ways of evaluating interaction in the two countries. Several of the individuals’ narrated experiences illustrate how utterances which in Denmark are perceived as witty and humorous are perceived as vulgar and aggressive in Sweden. The individuals’ experiences and the sociolinguistic implications of them are analyzed using notions and perspectives from Pierre Bourdieu – in particular, the notions of linguistic habitus and linguistic market are used – along with the notion of Spracherleben, developed by Brigitta Busch. The study illuminates that even though Danish and Swedish are closely related languages, there are significant differences in the pragmatic logic that prevail in the linguistic markets of the two countries, and that these differences generate critical effects on the linguistic experiences of these mobile individuals.
On September 30, 2005, the Danish newspaperJyllands-Postenpublished twelve cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. Five months later, thousands of Muslims inundated the newspaper with outpourings of anger ...and grief by phone, email, and fax; from Asia to Europe Muslims took to the streets in protest. This book is the first comprehensive investigation of the conflict that aroused impassioned debates around the world on freedom of expression, blasphemy, and the nature of modern Islam.
Jytte Klausen interviewed politicians in the Middle East, Muslim leaders in Europe, the Danish editors and cartoonists, and the Danish imam who started the controversy. Following the winding trail of protests across the world, she deconstructs the arguments and motives that drove the escalation of the increasingly globalized conflict. She concludes that the Muslim reaction to the cartoons was not-as was commonly assumed-a spontaneous emotional reaction arising out of the clash of Western and Islamic civilizations. Rather it was orchestrated, first by those with vested interests in elections in Denmark and Egypt, and later by Islamic extremists seeking to destabilize governments in Pakistan, Lebanon, Libya, and Nigeria. Klausen shows how the cartoon crisis was, therefore, ultimately a political conflict rather than a colossal cultural misunderstanding.

Encounters with Kierkegaard is a collection of every known eyewitness account of the great Danish thinker. Through many sharp observations of family members, friends and acquaintances, supporters and ...opponents, the life story of this elusive and remarkable figure comes into focus, offering a rare portrait of Kierkegaard the man. Often viewed by his contemporaries as a person who deliberately cultivated an air of mystery and eccentricity, Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) has been, then and now, a subject of great speculation. His startling attack on the established church, his broken engagement with a young woman from a respected family, and his searing criticisms of literary figures--from the editors of The Corsair to Hans Christian Andersen--are among the acts that brought him much notoriety during his short lifetime. Yet arriving at a sense of the philosopher's personality and motives behind his behavior has been a difficult task. He left no memoirs of autobiography, but in the enormous cannon of his published writings, the author and the person Søren Kierkegaard is problematically present in a welter of disguises. An indispensable path to understanding what he was like as a person, maintains Bruce Kirmmse, is through the observations of his contemporaries. These accounts, ranging from the writings of Meïr Aron Goldschmidt, editor of The Corsair, to the recollections of Kierkegaard's fiancée, are organized around the major episodes of the philosopher's life. They enable us to glimpse, among many things, his spiritual and intellectual development, to get a sense of what it was like to be the object of his friendship or his wrath, and to examine various persons' opinions about his relationship with his young fiancée. The memories of this woman, Regine Olsen, who later married Fritz Schlegel, are among the most moving passages: they reveal her profound suffering, her personal understanding of Kierkegaard, and the satisfaction she ultimately felt, knowing that "he took her with him into history." This collection of first-hand accounts invites the reader to compare and interpret a wealth of fascinating stories, and in the end forms an intriguing "do-it- yourself" biography for both the scholar and general reader.
The Muhammad cartoon crisis of 2005−2006 in Denmark caught the world by surprise as the growing hostilities toward Muslims had not been widely noticed. Through the methodologies of media ...anthropology, cultural studies, and communication studies, this book brings together more than thirteen years of research on three significant historical media events in order to show the drastic changes and emerging fissures in Danish society and to expose the politicization of Danish news journalism, which has consequences for the political representation and everyday lives of ethnic minorities in Denmark.
Kljucne rijeci: kulturni kapital, obrazovne nejednakosti, socioekonomski status, obrazovno postignuce, PISA, Hrvatska, Njemacka, Danska.
The absurdity of bureaucracy is a contemporary implementation study that unveil how organisational complexity and inefficacy is fed and sustained by employees well-meant attempts and almost primal ...instinct to compensate for malfunctioning bureaucratic systems by repairing them, short-cutting them, or surpassing them.
Over several years, Christian Suhr followed Muslim patients
being treated for jinn possession and psychosis in a Danish mosque
and in a psychiatric hospital. Through rich filmic and textual case
...studies, he shows how the bodies and souls of Muslim patients
become a battlefield between the moral demands of Islam and the
psychiatric institutions of European nation-states. The book
reveals how both psychiatric and Islamic healing work to produce
relief from pain, and also entail an ethical transformation of the
patient and the cultivation of religious and secular values through
the experience of pain. Creatively exploring the analytic
possibilities provided by the use of a camera, both text and film
show how disruptive ritual techniques are used in healing to
destabilise individual perceptions and experiences of agency, which
allows patients to submit to the invisible powers of psychotropic
medicine or God.
