As a by-product or material used in various industries crystalline silica contaminates the air many occupational settings. If its fine particles are inhaled, they are deposited in the lungs and may ...cause the development of silicosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lung cancer. The goal of this study was to estimate occupational exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) in Slovenia and the associated health risks. To do that, we ran two cross-sectional studies, one to determine the number of workers at risk of occupational exposure to RCS in Slovene industries and the other to determine and classify changes in the lung radiographs of glass factory workers exposed to RCS, as a means to infer health risks for other RCS exposed workers in Slovenia. However, the first study shows that official public data on occupational exposure to silica in Slovenia are unreliable and incomplete and that company representatives strongly underestimate occupational exposure to silica. Measurements of total and silica dust are made by 8.3 % and 1.8 % of companies working with silica, respectively. The second study shows that about a third of the exposed workers had lung changes associated with silicosis. We have failed to achieve the goal of our study, as the obtained data are grossly underestimated and unreliable, but it has opened our eyes as to what needs to be improved. All companies need to systematically be informed about occupational health risks, field inspections need to be consistent, regular, and intensified, and health surveillance of all exposed workers implemented regularly.

The development of science is accompanied by the growth of scientific publications in the form of articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals. We analysed the scientific papers of the employees of ...the Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering, University of Ljubljana, in the field of construction and geodesy for the period from 2003 to 2008, their citations, methods of publication and open access. The analysis was conducted in the ISI/Web of Knowledge and Google Scholar information systems. We wanted to determine how both information systems show the visibility of scientific production, specifically the number of articles and their citations, and make data comparisons. We have not found many significant differences in the information systems regarding these two elements.

Nova palača je doslej najvišja zgradba v Ljubljani, saj je visoka okoli 60 metrov. Skupno s kletnimi prostori meri nekaj nad 71 metrov, s tremi kletnimi etažami pa skupno 21 etaž. V kletnih prostorih, ki so v glavnem že urejena in opremljena bodo zaklonišča, transformatorska postaja, trgovina ter skladiščni prostori. V pritličju in medetaži bodo stalne izložbe, v ostalih prostorih pa bo uprava podjetja. Z aluminijasto fasado se bo zgradba Metalke uvrstila med prve tovrstne zgradbe na Balkanu. Trgovino s kletnimi prostori bodo odprli že jeseni, otvoritev pa bo februarja prihodnje leto.

Med krovci pohorskih bajt; panorama; oranje s volovsko vprego, domačija v hribih, prekrivanje strehe s lesenimi skodlami; žaganje hloda z motorno žago, cepljenje hloda s sekiro ...in klini, obtesavanje, izdelava skodel, polaganje na streho.
Kdor se bo napotil na izlet v prelepi del Južnega Pohorja nad Slovenskimi Konjicami, bo kmalu naletel na prijetno oblikovane pohorske domačije. Strme strehe kljubujejo vremenu v vseh letnih časih. Niti najmanjša kapljica ne prodre skozi lesene »šiklje«, s katerimi so krite.
Edina krovca za take strehe sta na Pohorju Ivan in Ludvik Kumer iz Resnika. Edina še znata pripravljati šiklje, kajti priprava in uporaba šikljev zahteva pogum in mojstrsko roko. Tudi ni brez nevarnosti plezati na visoko in strmo streho s polnim naročjem čeprav dišečih smrekovih deščic.
Za izdelavo šikljev je potrebno v prostranih pohorskih gozdovih najti zdrav, raven in negrčav smrekov les debel 80 do 100 centimetrov. Deblo nato razžagajo na 80 do 100 centimetrov dolge kose, ki jih s pomočjo posebnih lesenih klinov razcepijo v muzle. Iz »muzla« s »šikljarico« nacepi 35 do 40 deščic. Ludvik Kumer je tak mojster pri tem delu, da našiklja na dan tudi tisoč kosov. Pri tem mora izredno dobro poznati strukturo lesa. Deščice so namreč debele komaj 4 milimetre.
Šiklji morajo biti tako zloženi, kot so bili nacepljeni, sicer bi se ob pokrivanju strehe ne zjemali in streh bi zamakala. Dobro izdelani in podloženi šiklji kljubujejo tudi do 35 let. Nato jih je trebe zamenjati. Za sto metrov veliko streho je potrebnih kar osem tisoč šikljev. Pokrivanje traja štiri dni in stane 600 dinarjev. Kljub nizki ceni pa je s šiklji kritih domačij na Pohorju vse manj. Vzrok ni v pomanjkanju lesa. Le Ivan in Ludvik Kumer sta zadnja krovca. Tudi Kumarjev oča je bil znan »olcar«in pohorska korenina, saj je še pri 85. Letih upal splezati na streho in jo pokriti. Sin Ivan je krovec že 50. Let. Mlajši Ludvik ima sicer dva sinova, a nobeden ne bo »olcar«. Obema želita oče in stric v dolini lažje življenje kot sta ga živela sama sredi pohorskih gozdov.
