This paper uses framing theory to challenge previous understandings of queer safe space, their construction, and fundamental logics. Safe space is usually apprehended as a protected and inclusive ...place, where one can express one's identity freely and comfortably. Focusing on the Jerusalem Open House, a community center for LGBT individuals in Jerusalem, I investigate the spatial politics of safe space. Introducing the contested space of Jerusalem, I analyze five framings of safe space, outlining diverse and oppositional components producing this negotiable construct. The argument is twofold: First, I aim to explicate five different frames for the creation of safe space. The frames are: fortification of the queer space, preserving participants' anonymity, creating an inclusive space, creating a space of separation for distinct identity groups, and controlling unpredictable influences on the participants in the space. Second, by unraveling the basic reasoning for each frame and its related affects I show how all five frames are anchored in liberal logics and reflect specific ways in which we comprehend how queer subjectivities produce/are produced through safe space and its discourse.
LGBT individuals experience discrimination in health care settings and report difficulty accessing clinically competent healthcare. This study examined the self-assessed knowledge, clinical ...preparedness, LGBT health focused education received and attitudinal awareness of health care workers (HCW) (n = 215) toward LGBT patients at an urban hospital in New York City. HCW completed a one-time survey, that included the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Development of Clinical Skills Scale. Forty percent of HCW treated LGB patients and 30% treated transgender patients, 11% and 18% reported they were unaware if their patients were LGB or transgender. Seventy-four percent of HCW received less than two hours of formal education in LGBT health. A slight majority of HCW (51%) reported not receiving adequate clinical training to work with transgender clients. Forty-six percent of HCW reported not receiving adequate clinical training to work with LGB clients. A significant difference in LGBT health knowledge, clinical preparedness, and attitudinal awareness was found by LGBT health education received. HCW that reported more LGBT focused health education reported higher basic LGBT health knowledge, felt more clinically prepared, and reported affirming attitudes regarding LGBT patients. This research suggests that more LGBT health focused education of HCW is needed.

...Pride Parades and LGBT Movements contributes to a better understanding of LGBT protest dynamics through a comparative study of eleven Pride parades in seven European countries – Czech Republic, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK – and Mexico. Peterson, Wahlström and Wennerhag uncover the dynamics producing similarities and differences between Pride parades, using unique data from surveys of Pride participants and qualitative interviews with parade organizers and key LGBT activists. In addition to outlining the histories of Pride in the respective countries, the authors explore how the different political and cultural contexts influence: Who participates, in terms of socio-demographic characteristics and political orientations; what Pride parades mean for their participants; how participants were mobilized; how Pride organizers relate to allies and what strategies they employ for their performances of Pride.

There are approximately 90 000 lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals in Orange County, California. LGBT individuals have significant health disparities, particularly if they are ...from racial or ethnic minority groups and/or have a disability. There are structural and access barriers in the health care system that increase these health disparities. These individuals experience discriminatory situations when accessing health care and mental health services, which may affect their health-seeking behaviors. The purpose of this pilot quantitative cross-sectional study was to gather information about the current health care experiences and needs of this LGBT population including priority health issues, physical and mental health care utilization, and perceived adequacy of LGBT-friendly physical and mental health care providers. These findings will inform organizational strategies for nursing administrators and other health care leaders when tailoring, planning, and redesigning structures that meaningfully address the service needs of this at-risk group. Seventy-five participants were recruited from 2 organizations serving the LGBT community to complete an online survey. Findings include trouble finding an LGBT competent provider, delays or being unable to access care, and worried about losing insurance. Most participants needed to visit multiple different locations to receive care and preferred a 1-stop shop.
The study is drawn from the challenges and experiences of the LGBT individuals in the country experiencing discrimination and harassment due to marginalization which remained to create barriers to ...equality for LGBT people. The passing of Anti-Discrimination Ordinances in selected cities in Metro Manila is a triumph for many LGBT groups. The study shed light on comparison of Anti-Discrimination Ordinances and the existing LGBT ordinances between the selected local governments of Metro Manila in terms of its implementation and effects. It identified which among the local government units (LGUS) initiatives suits to be the best that may serve as model for other local governments in their future legislation of their own Anti-Discrimination Ordinance. The study utilized the Principal-Agent Theory to contextualize a situation in which local governments are involved. A qualitative comparative analysis that used key informant interviews and surveys is utilized in the study. Results presented that despite having the same composition and provisions when it comes to its enactment, Marikina, Manila, and Mandaluyong differ in ways and use of systems in terms of enforcement. Thus, the three LGUs may further establish mechanisms to monitor complaints of gender-based violence and provide guidelines in handling LGBT victims and may incorporate awareness-raising campaigns. Abstract Purpose Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) adolescents are at greater risk for mental health problems than their heterosexual peers, in part due to victimization. Social support, ...particularly from families, has been identified as an important promotive factor. However, little is known about how LGBT youth experience multiple forms of support or how early support predicts mental health across adolescence and into young adulthood. Methods In an analytic sample of 232 LGBT youth aged 16–20 years at baseline across 5.5 years, we compared developmental trajectories of psychological distress between three empirically derived social support cluster types at baseline: those who reported uniformly low support, those who reported uniformly high support, and those who reported nonfamily support (i.e., high peer and significant other but low family support). Results Longitudinal multilevel modeling, controlling for age, victimization, and social support at each wave, indicated key differences between cluster types. Youth in the low and nonfamily support clusters reported greater distress across all time points relative to youth in the high support cluster; however, they also showed a sharper decline in distress. Youth in the nonfamily cluster gained family support across adolescence, such that they resembled youth in the high support cluster by early adulthood. Conclusions Findings underscore the importance of family support for LGBT youth. Youth who lack family support, but who have other forms of support, report a decrease in psychological distress and an increase in family support across adolescence. Youth who are low in all forms of support continue to exhibit high distress.
The current review presents a meta-analysis of the existing empirical literature on the prevalence of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals, ...as well as on correlates of NSSI within sexual and gender minority populations. Eligible publications (n = 51) were identified through a systematic search of PsycINFO, MEDLINE, and Embase, supplemented by a search of references of prior reviews on this topic. NSSI prevalence rates were quite elevated among sexual (29.68% lifetime) and gender (46.65% lifetime) minority individuals compared to heterosexual and/or cisgender peers (14.57% lifetime), with transgender (46.65% lifetime) and bisexual (41.47% lifetime) individuals being at greatest risk. Even among these group findings, sexual minority youth emerged as an especially vulnerable population. Moreover, current evidence suggests these rates and differences between LGBT and heterosexual and/or cisgender peers have not declined over time. These findings may in some measure be due to the existence of LGBT-specific risk correlates combined with general risk correlates being more severe among sexual and gender minority populations. Additional research, particularly employing a longitudinal design, is needed in this area to advance efforts to reduce risk for NSSI among sexual and gender minority individuals.

This article explores LGBT politics of space in Jerusalem, a contested and fractured city. By interpreting the challenges and contradictions inherent in the Jerusalem Open House (JOH), a social ...movement and community space in Jerusalem, the article will show how the discourse and the practice of the JOH lead to a politics of holding. This LGBT spatial politics consists of striving to include oppositional politics, emphasizing the consolidation of public and private LGBT politics of home. The JOH persistently maintains a politics of holding, continually balancing inclusion, creating a home-like space and framing the organizational space as a shelter for all LGBT individuals in Jerusalem, while adopting a politics of visibility. This visibility enhanced processes of politicization which at many points stand in contrast to the JOH's goals of being accessible, inclusive, and safe. The politics of holding illustrates the religious, political, national, and ideological fractures' at work in producing a unique kind of LGBT spatial politics in the conservative Jerusalem space.
