Population dynamics of the coypu, Myocastor coypus, were studied in central-West France. This species has recently colonized temperate regions despite physiological sensitivity to cold weather. ...Live-trapping over three years demonstrated that increasing population densities from summer into autumn were associated with a faster population turn-over, homogeneous dispersion, and reduced rates of weight gain. Densities fell by 71% over a cold winter in which canals froze for 20 consecutive days, and by 69% over a mild winter with a flood of 5 weeks duration. Mortality was high in the coldest weather, and 45% of those surviving had frost lesions. A scarcity of males after the cold winter (up to 1♂: 3.3♀) was matched in a nearby population at artificially low density, where dispersing males predominated after the flood. The effect of the cold winter on reproductive output was to synchronize littering in summer, at a time of rich food supply. It was concluded that a flexible response to winter conditions enabled coypus to minimize the effects of extreme events and maximize their colonizing potential.
The isolation of L. Interrogans from a one week dead coypu is reported. The isolate was identified as a pathogenic strain of leptospira belonging to the Icterohaemorrhagiae serogroup.
Arterial blood acid-base status of unanesthetized, unrestrained nutria was studied during exposure to 5, 10 and 14.5% CO2 for 6 hr. Control values, pH = 7.426 +/- 0.037, PaCo2 = 36.5 +/- 3.1 mmHg and ...HCO-3 = 24.3 +/- 2.5 mM/1 (n = 24), are within the normal range reported for other mammals. Values after 6 hr of exposure to 10% CO2 were: pH = 7.355 +/- 0.043, PaCO2 = 71.0 +/- 3.6 mmHg and HCO-3 = 38.0 +/- 4.1 mM/l (n = 5). Arterial blood buffer slopes, obtained from the in vitro titration curve, did not show any pattern of adaptation to hypercapnia. Whole body buffer slopes, calculated from the in vivo CO2 titration curve, showed significantly higher values for the nutria than for the rat, dog and man, under comparable conditions beta(delta HCO-3/delta pH) = 57.0 slykes for nutria, 32.6 for rat and 11.8 for man. delta H+/delta PaCO2 = 0.38. mM/l/mmHg for nutria, 0.55 for rat and 0.76 for man. The results suggest that the nutria possesses an efficient metabolic mechanism for regulation of pH level during exposure to hypercapnic conditions.
The coypu (Myocastor coypus Molina) is an aquatic rodent that has become a widespread pest in the south-east of England. Since the natural habitat of this animal is aquatic, the possibility of ...infection with leptospires was investigated. Twenty-nine coypu were trapped and examined by serological, histological and cultural methods. Of these, there was serological evidence of infection in seven coypus and Leptospira interrogans var. Wolffii was isolated from a further animal. This appears to be the first report of the isolation of leptospira from a coypu in Great Britain.
