Content analysis is a valuable tool to identify changes in policy. By analysing historical documents, policymakers and planners can improve their understanding of the institutional context in which ...decisions were made. Using the Island of Terschelling in the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden region of the northern Netherlands as our example, we show how content analysis can be used to understand the historical institutional context. We analysed policy and planning documents from 1945 to 2015, which was supported by semi-structured interviews with local key informants. We specifically considered tourism–landscape interactions. Although there were fluctuations between socio-economic development and nature protection over time, we found that there has been an increasing awareness of synergy. Synergies are crucial to balance nature protection with socio-economic development and to increase the social-ecological resilience of regions. We conclude that, by using content analysis, local documents can be used as a proxy for the institutional context.
•Understanding the historical and institutional context can help local policymakers.•Content analysis is a valuable tool to identify the changing dynamics of policy.•The orientation of policy and plans (e.g. re landscape and tourism) fluctuates.•Acknowledging synergies has historically been limited in policy and plans.•There should be greater focus on the synergies between tourism and landscape.

This book provides a comprehensive account of tourism in natural, wild and protected areas. The 2nd edition contains an overview of key literature and developments that have emerged since the ...publication of the 1st edition more than 10 years ago. As such, this book will remain an invaluable resource and review of the subject for many years to come.
This study tries to verify the contribution of natural soundscapes to tourist satisfaction from the perspective of tourist participation and to reveal the constraint factors affecting tourist ...participation by using the leisure constraint model. The results indicate that tourists' participation in natural soundscape experiences significantly improves tourist satisfaction. There are five dimensions of participation constraints, and the 'individual activities' dimension is the most important constraint distinguishing participants from non-participants. The greatest constraint for both groups is 'lack of information, expectations and attraction'. The constraint forces faced by both groups are successively sorted into structural, interpersonal, and intrapersonal constraints. Knowing why tourists do not participate in natural soundscape experiences can suggest strategies that can be used to overcome constraints.
This article explores the potential of geotagged data from social networks to analyse visitors' behaviour in national parks, taking the Teide National Park as a study area. Given its unique landscape ...and characteristics, plus the fact that it is the most visited national park in Spain, Teide National Park presents itself as a suitable candidate to explore new sources of data for studying visitors' behaviour in national parks. Through data from a social photo-sharing website (Flickr) and GPS tracks from a web platform (Wikiloc), we outline several visitors' characteristics such as the spatial distribution of visitors, the points of interest with the most visits, itinerary network, temporal distribution and visitors' country of origin. Additionally, we propose a practical use of geotagged data for determining optimal locations for new facilities such as information stands. Results show that data from social networks is suitable to analyse visitor behaviour in protected areas.
Biodiversity is declining in part due to destructive and unsustainable human activity. Nature-based tourism, informed by scientific data, has the potential to replace some income generated by ...unsustainable practices. We observed two groups of Hoolock tianxing gibbons - one exposed to tourists and the other to small research teams - at Gaoligong National Nature Reserve, China. We found that H. tianxing gibbons spent significantly more time scanning and less time resting in the presence of tourists, and that these effects were amplified by the number of tourists. We did not find a difference in overall daily activity budgets of individuals exposed to tourism compared to individuals exposed to research teams, suggesting that behavioural changes are currently restricted to periods when tourists are present. Gibbon-focused tourism programs have the potential to contribute to conservation efforts and our study demonstrates that programs informed by scientific research can be an ethical and sustainable conservation tool.
The study explored people's life experiences, mental health, and well-being during the lockdown phase of the coronavirus pandemic. It discusses people's inclination and motivation for travel ...post-COVID-19. Narrative inquiry was used as a qualitative research design. Thematic analysis and sentimental analysis were applied to assess study participants' life state, emotions, and travel choices. Respondents described their lived experiences around seven major themes. Nature-based travel for spiritual elevation, transformation, and healing emerged as the most sought out choice of travel post-COVID-19. The study provides a foundation for policy formulation and will facilitate understanding people's perceptions and expectations from travelling post-COVID-19..
Nepal has linked protection of endangered rhinos to nature-based tourism and poverty reduction. Successful anti-poaching and conservation campaigns have resulted in increases in tourist numbers and ...rhino populations, which in turn have increased incidences of human and rhino casualties in the areas surrounding Chitwan National Park. Thanks to Nepal's National Trust for Nature Conservation, orphaned or injured rhinos are transported to facilities where they can safely recover or mature. This paper suggests the use of a posthuman and symbiotic ethics view of multispecies communities to challenge normative ethical assumptions on animal 'rescue.' It tells the stories of rhinos raised at the NTNC campus, who became celebrities as well as tourist attractions. These rhinos regularly transgressed both human- and other rhino-imposed boundaries. Their stories offer insight into the struggles of wild individuals who find themselves thrust into increasingly anthropogenic areas, and the ways in which rhinos and humans adapt to shared landscapes.
Nature-based tourism signifies an imperative revenue stream in many countries and is a vital tool for preserving their environmental resources. This paper aims at evaluating the possibilities of ...Dugong based tourism development in Marsa Abu Dabab besides offering the strategies for its sustainable development. To this end, a questionnaire was designed to achieve the study objectives and was distributed to the stakeholders. Quantitative data were analysed using the statistical package SPSS, while qualitative data were analysed by using the strategic analytical tool (SWOT analysis). Results revealed that the area is rich in important tourism potentials and a great significance is associated with developing Dugong based tourism in Marsa Abu Dabab. A Dugong based tourism development strategy matrix has been proposed to help the officials and decision-makers in developing policies, strategies and decisions that ensure optimum utilisation of the resources.
