This book, translated by Lev Blumenfeld, contains a synchronic grammar and grammatical dictionaries of Old Church Slavic. The framework is based on a substantially revised version of the classical ...descriptive methodology. The intent is to improve on the classical monographs by Vaillant, Diels, Lunt in the direction of utmost completeness, explicitness, and deliberate consistency between the grammatical structure, the corpus of texts (limited to the seven oldest OCS manuscripts), and the dictionaries. The grammar is intended as a set of rules that provide a complete characterization of any OCS wordform. Peculiarities in the language of each source are described as systematic departures from canonical OCS, a conventional constructed variety primarily described by the grammar. The book is addressed to linguists working in Slavic studies, as well as to specialists in the general theory of grammar, especially phonologists and morphologists. Data from the dictionaries are freely available as a searchable database online here.
In the context of the historic Mukachevo Eparchy, there was a tradition of translation of the biblical text, which was read during Sunday and feast day liturgies. This is evidenced by the numerous ...manuscript books, known as didactical Gospels, which were produced and used in the Eastern Rite Church environment in the studied area. In this paper we are comparing the translations of the Gospel pericopes with the Church Slavonic text.
The paper analyses the phenomenon of infinitive loss in Balkan Slavic in the context of the broader cross-linguistic process of subjunctive-infinitive competition (SIC). I adopt a diachronic ...perspective, analysing the historical developments pertaining to SIC in languages ranging from Old Church Slavonic to present-day Bulgarian and Serbian. The main goal of the paper is to distinguish between those instances of Balkan-Slavic infinitive loss that are a result of broader typological processes and those that can be viewed as genuine Balkan-sprachbund innovations. The specific Balkan innovation in this context was the replacement of infinitives by finite subjunctives in obligatory subject-control environments. I analyse this diachronic development as the result of a formal reanalysis affecting the syntactic status of the Balkan-Slavic subjunctive marker, which allowed it to spread to obligatory-control structures.
In this publication, we primarily point out how court, judge and judging were referred to in the Nomocanon (and secondarily in other normative texts of the Great Moravian period). We will also pay ...attention to the origin of these terms and try to determine whether these terms were also known in Old Slavic Language, i.e. whether they were also known in the domestic language environment of Great Moravia, or whether they were brought to this environment through the activities of Constantine and Methodius. At the same time, we will try to answer the question of who performed the judging and whether the judging was performed collectively or individually in the given period. We also pay attention to how the trial was carried out, whether it was institutionalized or not. We will also try to answer the question whether it is possible to assume the existence of ecclesiastical courts already in the Great Moravian period. In terms of secular regulations, however, it is likely that written legal regulations did not play a major role in the form of valid law enforced by the state. However, that probably should not even have been its primary purpose.

The paper provides evidence for a more articulated structure of the comparative as compared with the one in Bobaljik (2012). We propose to split up Bobaljik's cmpr head into two distinct heads, C1 ...and C2. Looking at Czech, Old Church Slavonic and English, we show that this proposal explains a range of facts about suppletion and allomorphy. A crucial ingredient of our analysis is the claim that adjectival roots are not a‐categorial, but spell out adjectival functional structure. Specifically, we argue that adjectival roots come in various types, differing in the amount of functional structure they spell out. In order to correctly model the competition between roots, we further introduce a Faithfulness Restriction on Cyclic Override, which allows us to dispense with the Elsewhere Principle.
In this paper, focussing on three Croatian glagolitic editions printed in Senj as examples, the authors attempt to form a clearer linguistic picture of the non-liturgical works printed at Senj's ...glagolitic printing press, particularly in light of previously established conceptions of the 16 th century Croatian literary language. Combining the vowel and consonant features of the Senj editions Korizmenjak, Mirakuli, and Naručnik, an effort was made to describe in detail the linguistic characteristics of the given level of description. At the same time, special attention was given to both Church Slavonic and vernacular (Čakavian) features. the analysis confirms that many of the described features are characteristic not only of the Čakavian of that time, but also of Croatian Church Slavonic. This indicates, on one hand, a tendency to preserve the literary tradition of the printed word, but on the other hand, also a confirmation of Čakavian phonological features.
The article studies the rendering of the main apophatic notions in the classic Old Bulgarian literary monuments. The terms of this subsystem are presented in their conceptual and linguistic aspects ...and, based on this; conclusions are made for the development of the terminological layer of lexis in the Old Bulgarian language. A dictionary of the apophatic terms in the classic Old Bulgarian literary monuments is proposed. It gives the empirical basis for the research.
Rev.: Šarapatková Ž., Slova a věci. Etymologické etudy, Prameny české etymologie 1, Bohumil Vykypěl, Vít Boček, red., Praha: NLN, 2022. The Etymological group of Brno begins the publication of a new ...series: “Prameny české etymologie” “Sources of Czech etymology”. The series opens with a collection of articles by Ž. Šarapatková, one of the authors of the recently completed Old Church Slavonic etymological dictionary “Etymologický slovník jazyka staroslověnského”. The collection comprises 20 articles, B. Vykypěl’s preface, a bibliography of the author’s works, a bibliography about the author, and indeces. Almost all articles focus on etymological analyses of the OCS lexicon with special attention to semantic aspects, which strengthens the argumentation in support of structural reconstructions. Based on particular etymologies, the following methodical problems of etymology are discussed: the importance and specifics of including rare words and dialect lexicon, and the role of folk etymology in the history of the lexicon and scholarly etymology.
The article deals with the recently discovered Ustovski sbornik, a written monument from the Central Rhodope region. The collection was compiled and owned by Kiryak Byalkovski, a prominent figure in ...the Central Rhodopes. The texts included in the collection are written in the local Rhodope dialect using the Greek alphabet. In addition, they contain features of South-western Bulgarian dialects, as well as vocabulary distinctive of Church Slavonic. The collection comprises sections of Damaskin sermons and gospel texts, among others. The article presents a set of guidelines for exploring the graphical, grammatical and lexical characteristics of this manuscript as part of the Central Rhodope literary tradition of the Bulgarian National Revival period.
