The monograph ('I live in Bukov Vrh ('village') below Bukov vrh ('hill')') contains eight different proposals for writing the initial in the non-first components of multi-word geographical proper ...names. The proposals were presented at the open conference ““Meeting of two commissions”“ in June 2019. The motives that triggered the discussion on spelling reform and the decision to consult with the general public before the final decision of the spelling commission are presented. A survey will be prepared, presenting the views of the debaters, presented in the present monograph. The views of the chapters in the central part of the monograph can be summarized in three groups: the first group advocates a more comprehensive reform, which is reflected in the technical solution of writing geographical names - ““all components of the name with a capital letter”“~the second group does not advocate technical reform at the outset, but focuses on clarifying the rules and abolishing the division into settlement and non-settlement names~the third group does not support any changes.
V prispevku je prikazan razvoj ontološkega izrazja v slovenskem jeziku od začetkov pa vse do konca 19. stoletja. Analiziran je izvor osrednjih ontoloških izrazov: podstat, bitje, bistvo, bitnost, ...bit. Izkaže se, da je bilo obdobje katoliške obnove posebej cvetoče glede nastajanja te terminologije, čeprav so bili osnovni izrazi stan, bitje) postavljeni že v protestantskem obdobju. Poleg tega se v tej genezi izkaže kot pomemben zlasti slovarski prispevek Valentina Vodnika in Mateja Cigaleta.
The article summarises the results of pilot research about communicative practices among adolescents at bilingual schools in Austrian Carinthia. I present the findings by referencing Bourdieu's ...Theory of Practice, which I supplement when necessary with established concepts from sociolinguistics and social psychology. Bilingual schools are one of the last public spaces in the region where the use of Slovene is said to prevail, but even here it seems that Slovene is not the first choice of most pupils. We can conclude from what the young people say about their language practices that the decisive elements for the formation of an individual's (language) identity are the habitus acquired during primary socialisation and the linguistic capital acquired during the phase of secondary socialisation or formal education. The current relative values of different languages in Austrian Carinthia as determined by their use are, of course, not set in stone, but it seems that that any change would require active language policies.
The Italian language in the ethnically mixed coastal area of Slovenia is an official language, regulated by the principle of ethnic autochthony, which recognizes the rights of linguistic minorities ...regardless of their number of speakers. Slovenia has been always very sensitive toward its two national minorities (Italian and Hungarian) and set up models of bilingual schools along its borders. In the official Italian-Slovenian bilingual area the "Littoral school system model" has been in place since 1959, requiring, in addition to establishing minority Italian schools, the compulsory teaching of the Italian language in all mainstream schools (Italian as L2), the teaching discussed in this paper. Nevertheless, Italian is not perceived as the language of the territory any longer; indeed, students at the end of elementary/middle school (15 years) typically reach a very low level of proficiency in Italian. Through an explanatory study based on the perceptions and perspectives of mainstream elementary/middle school Italian teachers we tried to identify the possible areas of investigation so as to understand the reasons of this decline and discover potential new ways of teaching. Moreover, examples of newly tried teaching approaches are introduced as new possible teaching and learning methods.
The article presents the research findings on the use of various social varieties of the Slovenian language, i. e. Standard and Non–standard language, by the students studying Slovenian language and ...literature in Maribor. A brief introduction is followed by a description of language culture and its efforts to improve the subject matter and the importance of the norm in a language with rich social language varieties use.
The research indicates the largely positive attitude of young people to the use of their own dialect in different language situations thus shifting the society’s traditionally negative attitude towards the use of dialectal language, perceiving it as a value and as an indicator of one’s personal and national identity. General dialectal characteristics are distinguished in non-formal communication and the informants' switching between the Standard language and the dialect in non-formal communication is a rare occurance, showing that the environment of schooling and the field of study are not prevailing influence factors in choosing a specific social language variety.
Razširjenost samostalniškega sloga se obravnava z vidika sistemske in funkcijske pogojenosti. Slednja kaže na to, da sta pojavnost in intenziteta posamostaljanja odvisni od besedilnih tipov, v okviru ...katerih ima kot stilotvorno sredstvo natančno določeno funkcijo. v kolikšni meri jezikovni sistem sam po sebi omogoča tvorbo posamostaljenj, lahko ugotavljamo tudi primerjalno; v pričujoči razpravi kot primerjalni jezik slovenščini služi nemščina, v kateri je nominalizacija zelo razširjen pojav. v okviru funkcijskostilističnih preučevanj izhaja kvantitativno utemeljeni samostalniški slog iz tvorbeno-pretvorbenih zmožnosti jezikovnega sistema na besedotvorni in skladenjski ravni. m edjezikovna primerjava postopkov in oblik posamostaljanja je smiselna spričo zgodovinske povezanosti slovenskega jezikovno-kulturnega prostora z nemškim, kar potrjujejo številne jezikoslovne študije in tudi novejše razprave s to temo.

Communication through email represents one of the most important forms of business communication, not just within a company but also externally with customers. The paper examines email interactions ...between the agents representing a Slovenian transport company and its customers. More specifically, the study examines specific aspects and elements of email production in a Slovenian customer service setting. It is hoped that the findings will help enhance the communication skills of learners of Slovenian as a foreign language and students of translation and increase their cultural awareness and their knowledge of technology-mediated customer service communication. Moreover, the findings could increase students’ understanding of the pragmatic motivations behind interactants’ linguistic choices.

Having signed different European and national documents, Slovenia accepted the ideas of European language policy based on multiculturalism and multilingualism. In this paper the method of critical ...discourse analysis is used to answer the question how these ideas are implemented both formally and legally in documents which enable the realization of language policy in education, with special attention being devoted to ideological concepts of these documents. The differences between the declarations in documents and practice are underlined, following the example of the Croatian language in Slovene primary school, where it primarily has the status of the foreign language. It is concluded that educational language policy in Slovenia generally supports learning and teaching of Croatian as a foreign language, but, unfortunately, without any planned strategy for foreign language teaching and also without systematic and coordinated concerns of competent institutions.
