Given how poignantly and even brutally In Dubious Battle, Of Mice and Men, and, most famously, The Grapes of Wrath exposed the suffering of America's dispossessed, early critics of Tortilla Flat ...cannot be much faulted for seeing the novel's comedic surface but missing its ubiquitous references to loneliness and death. While the paisanos hope their faith will be rewarded with a house of joy in Heaven (Steinbeck 84), their trust is misplaced, a point comically illustrated by the Pirate's service to Saint Francis of Assisi: Once I had a nice dog, and that dog was sick; and I promised a gold candlestick of one thousand days if that dog would get well.
