Using the example of the multi-perspectival subject of science education, the book shows the basics, conditions for success and didactic concepts of digitization in elementary school. It describes ...the various aspects of digitization in elementary schools and provides a sound basis for political, pedagogical and didactic discourse. The book focuses not only on fundamental theoretical considerations of digital education in science education, but also on selected aspects of individual support with and through digital media, as well as on concrete suggestions for action and implementation options for digitization in science education. In this sense, the book offers suggestions for theory, research and practice.
The study aimed to investigate students’ psychological, cognitive, and social well-being in 6th Grade and the relations to academic achievement in compulsory school, as measured by grades in 9th ...Grade. Due to reports from Swedish authorities and research, students’ self-reported well-being has decreased during the last decade. Data from the Swedish longitudinal project Evaluation Through Follow-up was analyzed with confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling. By using data from two birth cohorts (1998:
N
= 7 684 and 2004:
N
= 9 437), differences in well-being across the two cohorts could be investigated. Cognitive ability, parental education, and gender were also accounted for. Statistically significant cohort and gender differences were found, where cohort 2004 was disadvantaged in all three well-being dimensions, and girls were disadvantaged in psychological and social well-being. Psychological well-being was negatively related to academic achievement, indicating that students who experienced more school-related stress performed higher than students who experienced less stress. Cognitive well-being was positively related to academic achievement. Possible causes of the decrease in well-being may be changes in the educational and assessment system, which meant that cohort 2004 went through compulsory school with a stronger focus on results and grades than earlier cohorts.
We measured the net progress of land reform in achieving a national policy goal for biodiversity conservation in the context of ongoing clearing of native vegetation and additions of land to a highly ...nonrepresentative (residual) reserve network, interior South Island, New Zealand. We used systematic conservation-planning approaches to develop a spatially explicit index of risk of biodiversity loss (RBL). The index incorporated information from national data sets that describe New Zealand's remaining indigenous land cover, legal protection, and land environments and modeled risk to biodiversity on the basis of stated assumptions about the effects of past habitat loss and legal protection. The index identified irreplaceable and vulnerable native habitats in lowland environments as the most at risk of biodiversity loss, and risk was correlated with the density of threatened plant records. To measure achievement, we used changes in the index that reflected gains made and opportunity costs incurred by legal protection and privatization. Application of the index to measure the difference made by land reform showed it had caused a net increase in the risk of biodiversity loss because most land vulnerable to habitat modification and rich in threatened plant species was privatized and land at least risk of biodiversity loss was protected. The application revealed that new high-elevation reserves did little to mitigate biodiversity decline, that privatization of low-elevation land further jeopardized the most vulnerable biodiversity in lowland native habitats, and that outcomes of land reform for biodiversity deteriorated over time. Further development of robust achievement measures is needed to encourage more accountable biodiversity conservation decisions.
With the development of science and technology and information nowadays, sports are also developing in the direction of science and technology sports and green sports. At present, many sports include ...sports training and competitions. Mass fitness and school sports are evaluated by performance measurement, which puts forward higher requirements for the reliability and accuracy of sports performance measurement. Therefore, with the development of surveying and science and technology, the electronic laser measuring instrument is widely used in sports and various fields, which brings convenience to the measurement of sports performance. In this paper, the application of electronic laser measuring instrument in sports is studied by means of documentation, experimental comparison, mathematical statistics and field measurement.
The purpose of this paper is to clarify the development of the measurements of academic ability and educational assessments in history education during the prewar period of Showa, based on the ...analysis of prior methods of testing history knowledge conducted by Ryoji Maruyama and Yohei Utsuki. The educational measurement campaign introduced from America to Japan by Kanichi Tanaka and others in the 1920s and 1930s criticized conventional test methods, emphasizing the need for scientific rather than subjective means of measuring the effect of instruction. This approach sought to implement the quantitative measurements that would provide rational grounds for evaluating educational programs and improving classroom instruction. The paper highlights three points. First, the debate over the measurement of academic ability and educational assessment in history education in Japan being highly influenced by the educational measurement movement in the United States, resulting in improved methods of testing student progress. Second, the assessment process was standardized by incorporating the research results of educational psychology and indexing the standard deviation. Third, the assessment process provided detailed information on how to improve the teaching of history. Maruyama and Utsuki performed their standardized testing at elementary schools, junior high schools, and girls' high schools in Gunma. Their analysis of test results revealed the gaps between the history materials that instructors were supposed to teach and what the children understood.
This article reports on school reform interventions and outcomes of the Howard University Center for Research on the Education of Students Placed at Risk (CRESPAR)/Capstone Institute, which uses ...evidenced-based strategies to promote the academic achievement and social competence of Black children, especially Black children who are from low-income Black families. This article includes a description of the "participant action research" and the "whole child" approaches employed by CRESPAR/Capstone Institute and the Talent Quest Model (TQM) of school reform. Selected program components and empirical reports of Talent Quest research and development projects are discussed, along with challenges in conducting school reform interventions. Implications for policy and practice are also discussed.
