This article analyzes rankings of alternative songs as published in Billboard to determine the presence of female musicians over time. The study also examines whether women who appear in a sample of ...these charts are more likely to be lead singers of bands or soloists. The hypothesis going in was that female artists would appear with less frequency than male artists and that women's appearances on the chart would diminish over the thirty years studied. This hypothesis was confirmed through analysis of the resulting data, although the degree to which women lack representation here was more striking than anticipated.
In 1995, Jennifer A. González coined the concept of "autotopography" to refer to those collections of objects which contain autobiographical information and may therefore become "museums of the ...self." This paper analyzes Patti Smith's M Train asan autotopographical narrative in which the author displays (through text and photography) the many objects that connect her to the past, acting as triggers for her memories and as repositories of identity. This article stresses that looking into the nature of autobiographical objects, and their links to the different ways of remembering, will allow us to further understand how lives are constituted on the page.
In the Basque Country during the 90s, models of cultural spaces for the visual arts were developed that stood out for their management formulas and ability to anticipate the dissemination and ...mediation of contemporary artistic practices. Models that not only produced exhibition activities but also activated transnational networks. At that time, alternative music became fashionable through different media waves that associated it with unpublished discoveries and modern attitudes.

Music has the capacity to evoke strong senses of belonging, place and identity. Especially in times of societal change music seems to become an important vehicle for individual and collective action. ...The new interest in folk music that swept over the Global North in the late 1960s and early 1970s particularly actualises these issues. It was a movement directed towards the revitalisation of local and regional folk music traditions, as well as an interest in folk music from different parts of the world. This article explores the intersections of these approaches. It investigates two musical initiatives where the musicians engaged in different ways with new repertoires, instruments and sound worlds. The first case is a female duo that performs Swedish traditional music from the region of Småland in Sweden, and the second a balalaika orchestra in Sweden, playing traditional music from Russia, Georgia and Ukraine. By adding a lens of mobility to previous research, using the notion of shifts coined by ethnologist Owe Ronström, the study follows the creative pathways of the performers engaged in these music groups. It investigates how folk music was enacted in performances and in contemporary discourses by combining analyses of archival material such as scrap books, reviews and recorded interviews with new multi-sited fieldwork. The study shows how the performers’ pathways were entangled with shifts in folk music aesthetics, shaping individual and collective stories in their search for authenticities, which point towards transnational belongings and a wish for creating better futures together.
Ergasilus centrarchidarum is a parasitic copepod that infects the gills of fishes in the family Centrarchidae. This parasite has been introduced in many regions of North America through introduction ...of infected Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus dolomieu); however, effects of E. centrarchidarum on its hosts have been poorly studied. Ergasilus centrarchidarum was first discovered infecting Smallmouth Bass in Ririe Reservoir in 2020, although timing of introduction remains uncertain. Our objective was to determine prevalence and intensity of infection of E. centrarchidarum on Smallmouth Bass in Ririe Reservoir. We used angling to collect Smallmouth Bass in the upstream portion of Ririe Reservoir in July 2021. On each fish, we documented presence of copepods and categorized intensity of infection in the left gill chamber (i.e., low, <10 copepods; medium, 10–20 copepods; and high, >20 copepods). Additionally, we euthanized 24 Smallmouth Bass to quantitatively determine intensity of infection. Prevalence of infection of E. centrarchidarum on Smallmouth Bass was 100% (n = 69 fish). Half of the Smallmouth Bass sampled were classified as having a high infection, while only 10% were classified with a low infection. In the lethally sampled fish, mean intensity of infection in the left gill chamber was 27 copepods (SE = 3.9). We did not observe damage to the gills of infected Smallmouth Bass. Additionally, we did not observe a relationship between relative weight and the category of intensity of infection. Therefore, we did not find evidence that E. centrarchidarum negatively influenced Smallmouth Bass in Ririe Reservoir; however, further research should directly study potential negative impacts of E. centrarchidarum on Smallmouth Bass. We did not find documentation of E. centrarchidarum elsewhere in Idaho; however, free-living Ergasilus spp. have been documented in Dworshak Reservoir, suggesting that E. centrarchidarum may be found in other waterbodies in Idaho.
We examine two “producer-oriented” audio distribution platforms, SoundCloud and Bandcamp, which have been important repositories for the hopes of musicians, commentators, and audiences that digital ...technologies and cultural platforms might promote democratization of the cultural industries, and we compare their achievements and limitations in this respect. We show that the emancipatory elements enshrined in SoundCloud’s bottom-up abundance are compromised by two elements that underpin the platform: the problematic “culture of connectivity” of the social media systems to which it must remain integrally linked and the systems of intellectual property that the firm has been increasingly compelled to enforce. By contrast, it seems that Bandcamp has been relatively stable in financial terms while being at odds with some key aspects of “platformization,” and we explore the possibility that some of the platform’s apparent success may derive from how its key features makes it attractive to indie musicians and fans drawn to an independent ethos. Nevertheless, we argue that even while in some respects Bandcamp acts more effectively as a cultural alternative than does SoundCloud, Bandcamp is also congruent economically and discursively with how platforms capitalize on the activity of self-managing, self-auditing, specialist, worker-users.
A pure nickel film and a carbon/nickel (C/Ni) composite film were produced using radio frequency magnetron sputtering. The structure of the films was regulated by adjusting the sputtering power and ...the time allocation of sputtering nickel and graphite targets. Furthermore, a scanning electron microscope, an x-ray diffractometer, and a Raman spectrometer were employed for sample characterization. The results demonstrated that the thickness of the pure nickel film and C/Ni composite film with a total deposition time of 60 s was between 44.96 and 65.31 nm. The nickel film exhibited preferential growth along the crystal plane (111), and the structure of carbon materials was in the second stage of the three-stage model known as “amorphization trajectory of graphite.” The prepared films’ electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) in the X-band was investigated using a vector network analyzer. It was observed that the C/Ni composite film with a thickness of 44.96 nm demonstrated a superior EMI SE with a maximum value reaching 21 dB. The EMI SE of the C/Ni composite film can reach the same performance and even exceed that of the pure nickel film obtained at the power of 200 W for 60 s in certain frequency segments. In conclusion, the pure nickel film can be replaced by C/Ni composite film prospectively due to their excellent EMI SE along with advantages such as reduced thickness, lighter weight, and lower cost.
Student radio stations in New Zealand have a long history of supporting local alternative music. This paper discusses research with New Zealand musicians carried out in 2019, which found that they ...are engaging with a music industry that requires new sets of skills, particularly for social media promotion. However they still identify student radio stations as a key site of support for airplay and connections with audiences. Student radio stations could assist musicians further with more active forms of support for local and national profile building and touring.
