Specificities in language and speech development are a defining feature of autism. Several psychoanalysts have hypothesized that these specificities originate in a unique mode of access to language ...that exclusively relies on signs rather than signifiers. Compared to the flexibility and dynamism of a language made of signifiers, a language made of signs is rigid, cumbersome, and poor in its capacity to encode complex concepts. This article investigates the supplementary methods that autistic subjects adopt to compensate for these setbacks, methods that enable them to encode complex concepts into their vocabulary using iconic signs. These methods are then developed into a psychoanalytic theory on the use of iconic signs in the strengthening of autistic language in the context of art therapy. A variety of case studies are then used to illustrate how newly gained access to a level of conceptual complexity can also bring dramatic changes to their lives.
ABSTRACTBackground:Research reviews highlight methodological limitations and gaps in the evidence base for the arts in dementia care. In response, we developed a 12-week visual art program and ...evaluated the impact on people living with dementia through a mixed-methods longitudinal investigation.
One hundred and twenty-five people living with mild to severe dementia were recruited across three research settings in England and Wales (residential care homes, a county hospital, and community venues). Quantitative and qualitative data on quality of life (QoL), communication and perceptions of the program were obtained through interviews and self-reports with participants and their carers. Eight domains of well-being were measured using a standardized observation tool, and data compared to an alternative activity with no art.
Across all sites, scores for the well-being domains of interest, attention, pleasure, self-esteem, negative affect, and sadness were significantly better in the art program than the alternative condition. Proxy-reported QoL significantly improved between baseline and 3-month follow-up, but no improvements in QoL were reported by the participants with dementia. This was contrasted by their qualitative accounts, which described a stimulating experience important for social connectedness, well-being, and inner-strength. Communication deteriorated between baseline and follow-up in the hospital setting, but improved in the residential care setting.
The findings highlight the potential for creative aging within dementia care, the benefits of art activities and the influence of the environment. We encourage dementia care providers and arts and cultural services to work toward embedding art activities within routine care provision.
Clinical research investigating the benefits of art therapy in individuals undergoing cancer treatment is growing, yet study designs focusing on certain cancers such as gynecologic malignancies are ...lacking. This study aimed to assess the impact of art therapy interventions on both anxiety and hope in patients with gynecologic cancer patients. The study design was prospective and non-randomized. Eligible patients had a primary or recurrent gynecologic malignancy, and were scheduled to receive at least six cycles of chemotherapy over eighteen weeks. Patients completed State Hope and State Anxiety questionnaires before and after each of five art therapy interventions during chemotherapy. Eighteen patients completed the study. Both anxiety and hope significantly improved after each art therapy session except for one. In addition, both anxiety and hope significantly improved between visit 1 and visit 5: State Hope -Visit 1 vs. Visit 5 (35.3 ± 7.8 vs. 40.0 ± 7.2), p = 0.019, effect size = 0.63; State Anxiety -Visit 1 vs. Visit 5 (32.8 ± 9.3 vs. 27.8 ± 8.8), p = 0.038, effect size = −0.53. The results showed art-based interventions facilitated by a board-certified art therapist positively impacted two domains in the quality of life of gynecologic cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. The attitude of patients, namely, a willingness to accept art therapy, may influence the outcome of the interventions.
•The study examined the efficacy of art therapy on decreasing anxiety and improving hope.•Limited research exits using art therapy with women diagnosed with gynecological cancers.•Art therapy interventions significantly decreased anxiety in each of the five sessions.•Feelings of hope improved after four out of the five art therapy sessions.•Results indicated that patients benefit from art therapy while receiving chemotherapy treatment.
Introduction: Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of expression and communication and enables individuals to use art to creatively express themselves. Art ...therapy is used to improve cognitive and sensorimotor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, promote insight, enhance social skills, reduce and resolve conflicts and distress. Purpose: The purpose of the review is to present the different uses of art therapy in psychiatric patients. State of knowledge: National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence identifies that arts therapies, including art therapy or art psychotherapy, dance movement therapy, body psychotherapy, drama therapy and music therapy, are considered to improve negative symptoms of psychosis. Improved social skills are likely to be associated with increases in prosocial behaviours. Art therapy interventions are effective in reducing trauma symptom severity and anxiety in traumatized adults. Art and music therapy programs were effective in reducing the degree of depression. Summary: Art therapy is a part of therapy in many psychiatric diseases, including depressive disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and psychotic disorders. Although the effectiveness of art therapy has been confirmed by some studies, this topic should still be investigated so that art therapy can become more effective and available for bigger group of patients.

The Self-Expression Emotion Regulation in Art Therapy Scale (SERATS) was developed as art therapy lacked outcome measures that could be used to monitor the specific effects of art therapy. Although ...the SERATS showed good psychometric properties in earlier studies, it lacked convergent validity and thus construct validity.
To test the convergent validity of the SERATS correlation was examined with the EES (Emotional Expressivity Scale), Emotion Regulation Strategies for Artistic Creative Activities Scale (ERS-ACA) and Healthy-Unhealthy Music Scale (HUMS). Patients diagnosed with a Personality Disorder, and thus having self-regulation and emotion regulation problems (n = 179) and a healthy student population (n = 53) completed the questionnaires (N = 232).
The SERATS showed a high reliability and convergent validity in relation to the ERS-ACA approach strategies and self-development strategies in both patients and students and the HUMS healthy scale, in patients. Hence, what the SERATS measures is highly associated with emotion regulation strategies like acceptance, reappraisal, discharge and problem solving and with improving a sense of self including self-identity, increased self-esteem and improved agency as well as the healthy side of art making. Respondents rated the SERATS as relatively easy to complete compared to the other questionnaires.
The SERATS is a valid, useful and user-friendly tool for monitoring the effect of art therapy that is indicative of making art in a healthy way that serves positive emotion regulation and self-development.
This research aims to determine the implementation of Islamic Art Therapy with Doodle Art in escalating student’s self-confidence at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya, as well as the effect of therapy. The ...study uses a qualitative experimental case study with single subject design model. Descriptive-comparative analysis is used by collecting data through observations, interviews, questionnaire, and documentation. The subjects were two students who had 10 indicators of low self-confidence based on observations and interviews, and their self-confidence scores were at a weak level based on the Lauster questionnaire. The five stages of therapy were implemented to the subjects six times in a month, including W arm up, Draw My Emoji, Motivational Session, Draw My Doodle, and the last, Evaluation and Follow up. T he results showed that therapy has been implemented as planned procedure, however, at the first and second meetings, the motivational session requires a fairly long portion of time. The effects of therapy were emerged on changes in the level of student self-confidence. Seven out of 10 indicators have changed, which means there is a fairly high increase in self-confidence. However, the confidence score of two subjects was still in low level based on the Lauster questionnaire, even so, the score shows an increase. Suggestions for further research, the results might be different if the process of Islamic art therapy considers aspects in the Lauster questionnaire.
