Fieldwork in several "best practice" companies showed that the important performance objectives sought to fulfil each company's manufacturing strategy were achieved through the use of initiatives and ...supporting enablers. A manufacturing excellence framework shows how these initiatives and enablers combine to support manufacturing excellence. This work explores the validity and usefulness of this framework by means of a postal survey conducted across a wide base of manufacturing companies in the UK. The nature of the questionnaire is outlined together with the results from the analysis of the data obtained from the questionnaire. The results show the framework will contribute significantly to manufacturing excellence. Also when the framework is used to identify those initiatives that are crucial to the fulfilment of the manufacturing strategy then the company's overall business strategy is more effectively executed.
The CEO of a fulfillment company in Portland, Oregon, USA, has long been known for innovation and growth. He has reached the stage where he wishes to grow the firm significantly over the next five to ...ten years. Within the first four months of the current fiscal year, the company has already doubled its sales pace. Doubling the size is not the end goal, for the CEO wants to eventually take the firm to 1020 times the size of the most recent fiscal year completed. To set the stage, the CEO commissioned an initial set of discussions with his key management personnel to ascertain whether or not he has the personnel in place to grow the firm. Herein the report of that effort.
Članak obrađuje rezultate istraživanja u primjeni metodologije 6σ u malim proizvodnim organizacijama u RH i iskustva u primjeni 6σ-programa u malim organizacijama nekih zemalja u Europi (Velike ...Britanije i Finske). Purpose - The aim of this research was to determine whether leadership practices vary between German and UK organisations.Design methodology approach - The author used self-assessment documents ...submitted by German and UK organisations to the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM), to identify leadership practices in both countries. A survey was used to determine whether these practices were commonly used and whether they were regarded as good practice.Findings - The research found similarities but also differences, e.g. feedback, recognition and communication. Many of the approaches described as good practice by UK organisations, were not described as usual practice. Where modern leadership practices had been adopted in Germany, they appeared to be more consistently deployed.Research limitations implications - The research findings indicate changes are happening in Germany, for instance with strategic management more common than found by previous researchers. A longitudinal study could track the adoption of new approaches in both countries. The study does not evaluate the effectiveness of the approaches identified.Practical implications - Recommendations are made for how the findings may be used in training.Originality value - The paper is original in its use of self-assessment documents to identify leadership practices in two European countries. The findings reflect current differences and may be helpful to people working with German and UK colleagues, either in mergers and acquisitions, collaborative research, supply chain or other forms of cooperation, by making them aware of some of the different perceptions they may encounter.
This paper considers the relationship between leadership strategy and practice and operational performance within the service sector, identifying significant associations between various measurements ...with respect to an organisation's theoretical world class status, size (as defined by number of employees) and sector. The paper identifies business-wide strengths in practice and performance and areas where "across-the-board" improvements can be made. Empirical evidence is provided using data collected as part of a region-wide study within the North East of England. A number of issues specific to the achievement of service excellence are addressed.

Purpose Many papers discuss the use of the balanced scorecard yet few provide empirical evidence within a longitudinal context. Still fewer studies present balanced scorecard evidence from within ...public services. This study seeks to consider the impact of implementing and using the balanced scorecard within a public service city council environment. Designmethodologyapproach The paper reviews the recent literature within the area of public sector performance measurement. A longitudinal case study approach is adopted using interview and documentation analysis to consider the impact of balanced scorecards in a public sector organisation. The impact of balanced scorecards was evaluated at three levels strategic planning, team management, and individual staff performance. Findings The empirical evidence suggests that the use of scorecards within the case organisation enables employees to clearly appreciate their role, and focus on delivery of performancerelated measures which support organisational strategy. Clarity of role appears to have a positive influence on the achievement of the organisation's business plan and excellence goals regarding the delivery of customer service. Research limitationsimplications As with any single longitudinal case study, issues of generalisability to other settings and environments can occur. Practical implications This paper indicates the potential benefits and pitfalls of introducing and developing the balanced scorecard within a public sector organisation. Originalityvalue This research is set within a public service environment and by providing empirical case evidence contributes to the literature within this area.
