Founded in 1872, the Glee Club is Rutgers University's oldest
continuously active student organization, as well as one of the
first glee clubs in the United States. For the past 150 years, it

In a previous work, the implicit theories about the teaching - learning of music shown by 40 choir directors were studied through quantitative analysis. In this study, the practice of two of those ...directors who respectively showed a traditional profile and a more complex one, is compared.
Firstly, we provide a description of the practice of the two conductors in terms of rehearsal structure, main typical activities and some of the learning dimensions that they promote comparing both quantitatively and qualitatively. Secondly, we look at the relationship between what each conductor actually does during the rehearsal and his implicit theories regarding learning music.
We analyzed the rehearsal practices of two amateur youth choir conductors. These conductors were selected in accordance with the teaching profiles they were shown to have from a previous research study. There was one traditional profile, focused on learning outcomes, and one profile focused on student learning and representation. Differences in practice were analyzed in terms of rehearsal structure, main typical activities and some of the learning dimensions that they promote. We also considered the relationship between the conceptions of the conductors and their practices, finding there was a strong relationship between theories and practices to identify two different ways of conducting the choirs.
Introduction. The choral art of Ukraine has strong age-old traditions that have become a part of the spiritual life of the Ukrainian people. At the same time, the realities of modern life dictate ...certain requirements regarding the improvement of the organization of choirs in the new conditions of life in society. Purpose and methods. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the theoretical foundations and develop practical recommendations for the formation of an effective system of art management in the organization of modern academic choral art, aimed at increasing the effectiveness of the functioning of choirs and artistic structures in Ukraine. The methodological basis of the research was dialectical, systemic, historical, cultural, interdisciplinary, and empirical approaches. Results. The conceptual foundations of art management are revealed. The state of active choirs in Ukraine is analyzed. An analytical comparison of two choirs was made: chamber choir “Kyiv” and amateur choir “Sine Nomine”. The management strategy of an artistic organization is based on the example of the chamber choir “Sine Nomine”. Conclusions. For the first time, a systematic and interdisciplinary approach to the article topic was applied. This made it possible to carry out a detailed structural, functional, and cultural analysis of choirs in Ukraine and to develop an effective strategy for their management. The significance of the obtained results lies in the addition of cultural and management sciences with new theoretical provisions regarding art management in the field of academic choral art, as well as the development of practical recommendations aimed at improving the management and increasing the efficiency of choirs in Ukraine.
At the opening of the Finnish section of the New York World’s Fair on May 4, 1939, the Finlandia Male Chorus performed; the choir had been founded especially for the trip to North America, and in ...particular for performing at the New York World’s Fair. In addition to general coverage in the press, the choir’s travel plans, its preparations, and the trip itself were followed on many different radio broadcasts. What did Mieskuoro Finlandia want to tell about Finland at the New York World’s Fair in the spring of 1939? How was the choir founded, how did it work towards the goal of its journey, and what did it do afterwards? Answers to these questions are sought here especially through the concepts of cultural diplomacy and country image. According to the article, the Finlandia Male Chorus’ activities serve as a good example of the creation of a country’s image implemented through the means of cultural diplomacy, which also includes cultural propaganda, i.e. the promotion of a country using its culture as a tool. The methodological approach of the article is situated in the cultural and historical research field of music.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, choral singing has been either completely prohibited or regulated with safety measures due to increased transmission risks. However, the impact of larger inter-singer ...spacings on the performance and educational process in boys’ choirs is unclear. This study analyzed recordings of six groups of five singers each from two boys’ choirs aged 7 to 16 who sang Beethoven’s Ode to Joy while standing on an arc with a 4 m radius and an inter-subject spacing of 0.5 to 3 m. The effects of singers’ masks, distance, group age, and relative position on the timing of articulation and fundamental frequency were investigated, along with the amount, rate, and sign of pitch drift and loudness.
The ANOCOVA results showed that onsets were robust to the tested factors, while errors in fundamental frequency tended to decrease with increasing age/experience. Loudness was affected by distance, mask, and relative position, with increasing loudness as spacing decreased. Understanding influencing factors can inform recommendations for choral singing and education.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, choirs had to apply safety measures such as distances and wearing masks. For children’s choirs, there is no knowledge of their reaction to these measures, regarding ...their age and experience. This study aimed to investigate boys choir singers’ perceptions of the measures, regarding wellbeing and feasibility, as well as the quality of the performance outcomes.
Six groups were put together, assembling five singers of the same age (7–16 years, before voice change) and experience level. The boys sang one verse of the same song at inter-subject distances of 3, 1.5, 0.5, 0.5 m plus wearing a mask and again 3 m. Afterward they filled out questionnaires concerning difficulty, irritation, hearing themselves and their neighbors, and if they could imagine singing regularly in the respective setting. Fifteen parents were asked to fill out questionnaires about their opinions about choir safety measures during the pandemic. Six anonymous boys choir experts rated the randomized recordings of all tasks regarding homogenous sound quality, rhythmical precision, and uniform intonation.
Even though most of the children preferred smaller distances, they were open to all kinds of settings. The answers given were very specific to the individuals. Masks were voted out by a majority of the subjects. Parents found choir singing very important for their children and did in majority neither fear infection of their children, nor mind precautions. The experts rated the performance outcomes of the largest distance (3 m) as best in most of the cases.
Different interspatial settings do not harm the children and adolescents and could be introduced as a beneficial approach to give them a broader listening experience and to make them flexible, alert, adaptable, and resilient singers. Singers’ masks are only recommended for compelling circumstances.
The presence of the choir in the Opera increases in the second half of the eighteenth century on the thrust of reformist demands aimed at the hybridization of Italian and French melodramaturgy. The ...mechanisms of the impresarios’ system and its reception have not been adequately explored, even though they can explain the reasons for the growing importance that the choir obtained during the transition from post-metastasian Opera to romanticism. The article provides some quantitative data, referring above all to those theatrical centers that more than others hosted permanent groups of choristers, and gives a summary of the vision of the choir from the perspective of both treatise writers and theatre audience.
