In the history of translating classical Chinese poetry, there are two kinds of translators. The first kind translate classical Chinese poetry “by way of intellectual, directional devices” (Yip, ...Wai-lim. 1969.
. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press: 16). What these translators are concerned with most is the coherence of their translations. They give little attention to the ideogrammic nature of Chinese characters. I call them traditional translators. These translators include those in the history of translating classical Chinese poetry from its beginning to the first decade of the twentieth century, although there are still some who translate classical Chinese poetry in this way later. The second kind of translator is highly interested in the images created by ideogrammic Chinese characters and tries to convey them in target language. We call them modernist translators. These translators are represented by some American modernist poets such as Ezra Pound, Amy Lowell, Florence Ayscough, etc. From the point of view of iconicity, modernist translators’ contribution lies in their concern with the iconic characteristics of Chinese characters. But they did not give enough attention to syntactical iconicity and textual iconicity in classical Chinese poetry.
This paper aims to develop a feasible way to recognize the style of classical Chinese poetry with computers. To this end, the authors explored the connectionism in neuroscience, and explained the ...cognitive word embedding with the convolutional neural network (CNN). On the one hand, the genetic algorithm was adopted to extract keywords from traditional hand-labelled and selected information; on the other hand, a novel computer learning method was proposed based on text-to-image (T2I) CNN for big data. The proposed method was contrasted with the traditional genetic algorithm of naive Bayes and information gain. The experimental results show that our method achieved better classification accuracy with less human intervention than the traditional genetic algorithm. Hence, the CNN-based method is feasible on big data, both in theory and practice. This cross-disciplinary practice sheds light on stylistics, literature engineering, poetry cognition and neural network projects.
Classical Chinese Poetry (CCP) is a brilliant gem of Chinese literature and has enchanted both Chinese and Western readers with its unique beauty. Translation of CCP, as an approach of cultural ...exchange, has played an indispensable role in introducing Chinese culture to the outside world in an era of globalization. Translators’ style is an important indicator of quality of a translated literary work. It has remained a hot topic of research in literary translation criticism. To evaluate the quality of CCP translation in both qualitative and quantitative manners, a prototype of a CCP Corpus is developed on the basis of computational linguistics and relational database technology. The prototype integrates the relational data model and XML to organize the semi-structured documents of CCP and its translation, and is efficient in retrieving and analyzing data. By making use of this prototype and taking Professor Xu Yuanchong's translation of CCP as a case, the translator's style is investigated in details on the lexical, syntactical and textual levels. The findings indicate that Xu's translation is easily understandable and that he has made great efforts to retain the beauty of meaning, form and sound of CCP in his translation.
Shuang Lu, also known as Ban Sugoroku, is an ancient board game from China. It is believed to have been transmitted along the Silk Road in the 3rd century. While there are numerous references to ...Shuang Lu in Chinese anecdotes, legends and literary works, there is little literature detailing the rules of the game. Shuang Lu is also depicted in classical Chinese poetry, which mainly describes the enjoyment of the game. This paper aims to analyse the content of the Han poem Xi Jiang Yue: Da Shuang Lu Li in the Southern Song literature, Shilin Guangji. Through the analysis of the poem, the study seeks to explore the initial strategies of Shuang Lu derived from classical Chinese poetry.
Članek predstavlja vsebinsko analizo Su Shijeve (1037‒1101) pesmi "Sliki Wang Weija in Wu Daozija". "budističnega izročila" in predstavljajo v osnovi ponazarjanje motivov razsvetljenja in utelešenja razsvetljenega modreca v okviru imenovane ikonografske tradicije.
The evolution of classical Chinese poetry in Singapore is closely related to the immigration experience of Chinese intellectuals in various periods. The travelogues of the foreign trips by Chinese ...officials dispatched to Singapore in the late Qing dynasty, such as Zuo Binglong 左秉隆 and Huang Zunxian 黃遵憲, focused on the depiction of exotic landscapes and aimed to open up horizons. The poems written by Khoo Seok Wan 邱菽園 and Pan Shou 潘受, and numerous works published in local newspapers from the period before the Second World War to the 1970s, represented the highest achievement of characteristically classical Chinese poetry in Singapore. After the 1980s, the new type of poetry writing reflected in the "Xin Sheng Poetry Society" (Xin sheng shi she 新聲詩社) and poetic columns online was characterized by diversity in the path of communication and the choice of subject matter, as well as an overall decline in creative quality. This article attempts to present the different stages of classical Chinese poetry in Singapore and its features over the course of the century within the context of Sinophone literature.
Chinese traditional poetry is an important art form, and it is a meaningful task to use artificial intelligence algorithm to generate poetry. In the past, researchers have proposed different ...generation algorithms, but these algorithms have some limitations. This paper mainly tries to use BART and other pretrained models, proposes FS2TEXT and RR2TEXT to generate metrical poetry text and even specific style poetry text, and solves the problem that the user's writing intention gradually reduces the relevance of the generated poetry text. Finally, in order to test the effect of the algorithm, this paper imitates Turing test and finds more than 600 testers to distinguish the works generated by the algorithm from the works of real human poets, and the results show that they can't tell whether the work is from an algorithm or a human. This shows that the algorithm proposed in this paper works well.
Based on the theory of foreignization and domestication, this essay analyzes the translation of cultural elements in classical Chinese poetry (CCP) and advocates that foreignization should be ...employed as the preferable approach in the translation of the cultural elements with Chinese cultural connotations.
