This paper will focus upon how the multi-faceted forces of global capitalism become operational in producing and contributing to the cultural homogeneity on a global scale. In contemporary times, the ...patterns of urbanization and the hierarchies embedded in them are largely connected to and resulted from the colonial rule. Global cities are characterized by the socio-economic polarizations in the population. The existing inequities between the urban and non-urban populations become more prominent due to direct foreign investments in global cities. Both the architecture and the urban space are affected by the discursive forces of the global cities along with the built environment which also bears the impacts. The significance of the historical processes of globalization have been downplayed in the economic and presentist analyses of how the contemporary global cities are formed. The growth of research has immensely expanded in the last three decades in the history of colonialism and the postcolonial architecture and urbanism. What is reflected in recent studies of postcolonial criticism is that how the postcolonial urbanism is more attentive to the role and activities of the native as alternative voices and visions. This paper will also critically analyze how the term 'global city' has been appropriated by the discursive forces of globalization to represent and reify, a particular aspect of both the city's activity as well as of the world, the world of economy. Hence, postcolonial criticisms become instrumental in dealing with the issues of representations, globalization, nationalism, historiography and cultural identities.
In today's globalised era, the limitations of the nation-state model are increasingly apparent. This model often demands homogeneity, leading to identity conflicts and separatist demands by national ...minorities. However, national and cultural identities remain politically relevant, making post-national ambitions difficult to achieve. To address this problem, we compare the thoughts of Otto Bauer and Abdullah Öcalan, who both emphasise overcoming the limits of the nation-state without dismissing national and cultural identities. Öcalan's ideas prioritise autonomy and multiplicity, while Bauer's contribution is based on a deterritorialised notion of national identity. As we argue in this article, the two authors share interesting points of convergence that have been understudied in academia. What is more, this comparison provides valuable insights for understanding contemporary challenges and solutions to multinational societies and identity conflicts.
Australia's participation in the 'Eurovision Song Contest' and involvement in the organisation of the Asian version of Eurovision (the 'Eurovision Asia Song Contest') through broadcaster SBS has been ...celebrated, questioned and criticised. In this article, I examine Australia's role in the organisation of the 'Eurovision Asia Song Contest' in the context of Australia's relationship with the region, and what this reveals about Australia's cultural identity and place in this Asia-Pacific region. If Eurovision was conceived as a post-war project to unify Europe, I argue that for the Eurovision Asia Song Contest to become a reality, it needs to have a framework that takes into account the region's own historical, political and geo-political contexts rather than having a Eurocentric model imposed on it.
Purpose: This article demonstrates how collaboration in a PAR and R&D research project can be facilitated by a design-led innovation process that juxtaposes design and scientific approaches. ...Theoretical Framework: The work was theoretically grounded in an interdisciplinary methodology and customer-centric approaches. Researchers adopted a "principles-driven" strategy as a primary guiding principle. Design/Method/Approach: This study utilized participatory action research (PAR) as a research methodology, emphasizing the importance of collaborations between stakeholders and the research team. The study methodology encompassed on-site visits, SWOT analysis, focus groups, and questionnaire surveys. The data obtained from all of the previously described instruments was subjected to qualitative analysis using triangulation. Findings: The study demonstrated that this approach significantly enhanced the innovation of new products and the establishment of brands by local businesses. The remaining fabric key rings of the stakeholders had an impact on the most recent clothing collection. The development of new products involved the integration of identity, traditional knowledge, and creativity with modern technology, utilizing local resources from the community for innovative transformation and business product development. By adhering to experts' recommendations, stakeholders can enhance the value of their products by demonstrating a preference for environmentally conscious, culturally significant, and artistically innovative products to the target market. The introduction of the new clothing product range received positive feedback from business owners and entrepreneurs, with an average rating of 4.71. Additionally, the annual sales value increased by 36.3%. PAR R&D facilitated the improvement of stakeholders. Research, Practical, and Social Implications: Creating eco-friendly apparel from fabric scraps will contribute to sustainability. Obtaining this level of sustainability requires collaboration across disciplines and design-driven innovation. In addition, this study demonstrates how a dynamic interdisciplinary innovation strategy can be effective for generating new product concepts, obtaining consumer feedback, and fostering collaboration and learning across disciplines. Lastly, this study provides other researchers and the local industry with actionable opportunity areas and design imperatives for their sustainability-based product innovation activities. Originality/Value: This study is the first to apply theoretical concepts to practical situations in a specific rural area to assist local community entrepreneurs lacking resources for research and development in improving their performance and outcomes, with a focus on creating product concepts that reflect the local cultural identity and incorporate innovative design principles.
Background
Health services research can benefit from frontline clinician input across all stages of research, yet their key perspectives are often not meaningfully engaged.
Objective
How can we ...improve clinician engagement in research?
Design
Convenience sampling and semi-structured interviews followed by descriptive content analysis with an inductive approach, followed by group participatory listening sessions with interviewees to further contextualize findings.
Participants
Twenty-one multidisciplinary clinicians from one healthcare system.
Key Results
We identified two major themes: perceptions of research (how research fits within job role) and characterizing effective engagement (what works and what does not work in frontline clinician engagement). “
Perceptions of Research
” encompassed three subthemes: prior research experience; desired degree of engagement; and benefits to clinicians engaging in research. “
Characterizing Effective Engagement
” had these subthemes: engagement barriers; engagement facilitators; and impact of clinician’s racial identity.
Conclusions
Investing in frontline clinicians as research collaborators is beneficial to clinicians themselves, the health systems that employ them, and those for which they care. Yet, there are multiple barriers to meaningful engagement.
One of the most consistently observed phenomena in autobiographical memory research is the reminiscence bump: a tendency for middle-aged and elderly people to access more personal memories from ...approximately 10-30 years of age. This systematic review (PROSPERO 2017:CRD42017076695) aimed to synthesize peer-reviewed literature pertaining to the reminiscence bump. The researchers conducted searches in nine databases for studies published between the date of inception of each database and the year 2017. Keywords used included: reminiscence, bump, peak, surge, blip, reminiscence effect, and reminiscence component. Sixty-eight quantitative studies, out of 523, met the inclusion criteria. The researchers implemented a thematic analytic technique for data extraction. Four main themes were generated: methods of memory activation/instruction for life scripts, types of memory/life scripts recalled, location of the reminiscence bump, and theoretical accounts for the bump. The two prevailing methods of memory activation implemented were the cuing method and important memories method. Three types of memories/life scripts were recalled: personal/autobiographical memory, memories for public events, and life script events. The findings illustrate differing temporal periods for the bump: approximately 10-30 years for memories for important events, approximately 5-30 years for memories that were induced by word cues, and 6-39 years for studies using life scripts. In explaining the bump, the narrative/identity account and cultural life script account received the most support.
This article summarizes research examining the relationship between the constructs of ethnic identity and personal well-being among people of color in North America. Data from 184 studies analyzed ...with random effects models yielded an omnibus effect size of r = 0.17, suggesting a modest relationship between the 2 constructs. The relationship was somewhat stronger among adolescents and young adults than among adults over age 40. No differences were observed across participant race, gender, or socioeconomic status, which findings support the general relevance of ethnic identity across people of color. Studies correlating ethnic identity with self-esteem and positive well-being yielded average effect sizes twice as large as those from studies correlating ethnic identity with personal distress or mental health symptoms. Ethnic identity was thus more strongly related to positive well-being than to compromised well-being. Overall, the corpus of research reviewed consisted of correlational designs; limited scholarship has addressed causal mechanisms, mediating factors, or psychological functions of ethnic identity across different social contexts. Cultural and ethnic identity research largely highlights the adaptiveness of biculturalism among Latino youth in the United States. Less is known about how Latino youth themselves define and ...experience biculturalism, the cultural identity content that they deem relevant, and how heritage and host identities intersect. Using an inductive approach, this study examines the salience, valence, and meaning of biculturalism among Latino youth living in a multicultural U.S. city. Twenty-six Mexican American emerging adults (Mage = 22.35 years) participated in semi-structured interviews and constructed cultural identity maps focusing on their experiences of biculturalism. Qualitative analysis reveals that participants overwhelmingly deem biculturalism to be positive and explores the duality (i.e.: opposition or contrast) that lies beneath that positivity. Participants emphasized individual-level advantages of biculturalism, namely, that their Mexican heritage provides identity rootedness and enables expanded career and educational opportunities. The bicultural challenges that participants discussed were overwhelmingly relational: familial cultural gaps due to dissonant values and critical gazes from others due to inadequate cultural performances. By revealing that and why biculturalism is mostly positive in the eyes of participants, and exploring the duality that lies beneath that positivity, this study draws attention to the complexity of biculturalism that can be obscured by exclusive reliance on quantitative self-report measures.
•Mexican American emerging adults overwhelmingly deem biculturalism positive.•Duality (i.e.: opposition or contrast) lies beneath this positivity.•Advantages of biculturalism center on the individual.•Challenges of biculturalism are most commonly relational.•The complexity of biculturalism may not be captured via survey-based research.
