(1839) and Rebekah Hyneman's serial novella
The Fatal Cosmetic
(1853) are harbingers of American sensation fiction, though for more than a century ...and a half they were doomed to oblivion. Although different in style and characterization, both novelists aimed at propagating social and political agendas. This paper examines the development of this genre's key elements from earlier conformist ones to their later comprehensive materialization. Moreover, it examines the possible mythological and historical sources Hyneman's novella draws on.
The literary production of Mexican writers Socorro Venegas and Sylvia Aguilar Zeleny has turned into a sounding box for topics such as violence against children and youngadults, negligence, underage ...labor, early pregnancy, and alcoholism. Their work establishes adialogue with what Cristina Rivera Garza calls “des-appropriate esthetic” which leads to anarrative that responds to the common good. This article studies some short stories in thebooks La risa de las azucenas (1997) by Venegas and Nenitas (2013) by Aguilar Zéleny, the use of the voice of children to expose concepts of violence and power. The study is based on David Stromberg’s concept of “narrative tension”, which claims that the narrative value of atext and the reader’s interpretive horizon is based precisely on the distance created by tension between the narrator and what is being narrated.
La producción literaria de las escritoras mexicanas Socorro Venegas y Sylvia Aguilar Zéleny, se ha convertido en importante caja de resonancia para tratar temas como violencia infringida a niñas, niños y jóvenes, negligencia, trabajo físico a temprana edad,embarazo precoz y alcoholismo. Su obra dialoga con lo que Cristina Rivera Garza llama “la estética desapropiativa”, que produce una escritura contestataria desde donde se contribuye al bien común. Este artículo revisa en algunos cuentos comprendidos en los libros La risa de las azucenas (1997) de Venegas y Nenitas (2013) de Aguilar Zéleny, el uso de voces de menor es para revelar nociones de violencia y poder, con base en las ideas sobre “tensión narrativa” de David Stromberg, quien ve que el valor narrativo del texto y la apertura del horizonte interpretativo del lector se crea en la distancia que la tensión crea entre narrador y lo dicho.
El sentido de la vista se ha implantado como el modelo cognitivo preferente en nuestra cultura; pero, ¿qué sucede cuando el orden visual se muestra falible?, ¿qué implicaciones y significados ...adquiere la presencia de un conjunto de enfermedades oculares que generan visiones defectuosas en la narrativa más reciente? En este trabajo se aborda, desde el paradigma de los estudios de género y de los estudios culturales, la obra de varias autoras latinoamericanas que han articulado en su narrativa diferentes desórdenes ópticos como la miopía, el estrabismo o la diplopía. Desde este planteamiento, se pretende demostrar que la presencia repetida de afecciones oculares ha configurado un motivo literario que se encuentra directamente relacionado con la emergencia de un nuevo posicionamiento estético. Las visiones deficientes se descubren, ahora, como la manifestación de ese mirar desde otro ángulo que precisaba el discurso femenino para oponerse a un régimen ocularcéntrico de raigambre masculina.

The star of the last meeting in the Pisarki na ekrany! (“Writers, to screens!”) series is Zofia Posmysz. Dr Paulina Kwiatkowska talks with prof. Monika Talarczyk about the uniqueness of ...the writer's perspective against the backdrop of other Gulag literature – thanks to her personal experience, she was able to write The Passenger, making the camp supervisor the narrator. Another important novel by Posmysz is also discussed, in which the author refers to her wartime experiences – Holidays by the Adriatic. The numerous adaptations of The Passenger are also discussed, as well as the various media that have been used for this purpose – from radio plays, through theatre plays and film, to opera performances. Dr Paulina Kwiatkowska also references Zofia Posmysz's recollections, who during her collaboration with Andrzej Munk on the script for The Passenger was forced by the director to recall in her memory as many images from the camp as possible. This is why the director was able to take on a unique challenge in the film – to focus on the image when telling a story set during the Holocaust. The culmination of this idea is the sequence of Liza's first film flashback – a series of suggestive images, a synthetic story about what Auschwitz actually was. Prof. Monika Talarczyk talks about a project which Munk was not able to make – a film about the capture of Adolf Eichmann by Israeli intelligence, based on a script he had received from the Argentineans.
Original language summary: Bohaterką ostatniego spotkania z cyklu „Pisarki na ekrany” jest Zofia Posmysz. Dr Paulina Kwiatkowska w rozmowie z prof. Moniką Talarczyk opowiada o wyjątkowości perspektywy zaproponowanej przez pisarkę na tle pozostałej literatury obozowej – dzięki osobistym doświadczeniom była ona gotowa napisać tekst „Pasażerki”, czyniąc narratorką obozową nadzorczynię. Jest też mowa o innej ważnej powieści Posmysz, w której autorka odwołuje się do wojennych doświadczeń – „Wakacjach nad Adriatykiem”. Pojawia się wątek licznych adaptacji „Pasażerki” i rozmaitych mediów, jakie zostały do tego celu wykorzystane – od słuchowiska, przez spektakl i film, po operę. Dr Paulina Kwiatkowska przytacza też wspomnienia Zofii Posmysz, która podczas współpracy z Andrzejem Munkiem przy scenariuszu „Pasażerki” była zmuszana przez reżysera do odnajdywania w swojej pamięci jak największej liczby nośnych obrazów z obozu. Dzięki temu reżyser mógł podjąć się w filmie wyjątkowego wyzwania – w opowiadaniu o Zagładzie postawić na obraz. Zwieńczeniem tego zamysłu jest sekwencja pierwszej retrospekcji filmowej Lizy – ciąg sugestywnych obrazów, syntetycznej opowieści o tym, czym było Auschwitz. Prof. Monika Talarczyk opowiada wreszcie o niezrealizowanym już przez Munka projekcie filmu o schwytaniu Adolfa Eichmanna przez izraelski wywiad – scenariusz otrzymał od Argentyńczyków.
The so-called New Argentine
Prose is a recent phenomenon in the
Argentine literary field that a few years ago
began to attract the interest of international
critics and readers. Writers such as
...Mariana Enríquez and Samanta Schweblin
undoubtedly represent an editorial success,
but there are also other authors of their
generation, that is, the one born around 1970,
such as Selva Almada, María Gainza, Ariana
Harwicz or Gabriela Cabezón Cámara, that
have appeared in recent years in the shortlists
and longlists of the prestigious International
Booker Prize, been fairly recognised at book
fairs, published by major Spanish publishers
and translated into other languages. Is it a
small women’s literary revolution coming
from Buenos Aires? Despite the large variety
of styles and themes deployed by these
writers, we shall ask ourselves whether there
is something in their novels and short stories
that we cannot find in the literature written
by men of the same generation, what has
been their path to consecration and why do
they have such visibility. The objective of
this study is to try to offer some answers
based on the theory of World Literature and
to try to situate these authors (taking into
account the generational approach) in the
national and international literary field.
La llamada Nueva Narrativa Argentina es un fenómeno reciente en el campo literario argentino que hace unos años empieza a captar interés de la crítica internacional. Autoras como Mariana Enríquez y Samanta Schweblin representan, sin duda, un éxito editorial, pero también otras autoras de su generación, es decir, nacidas alrededor del 1970, con temas y estilos muy variados - Selva Almada, María Gainza, Ariana Harwicz o Gabriela Cabezón Cámara - aparecen en los últimos años en los shortlists y longlists del prestigioso premio International Booker Prize, tienen éxito en ferias de libros, son publicadas por grandes editoriales españolas y traducidas a otros idiomas. ¿Se trata de una pequeña revolución literaria venida desde Buenos Aires? ¿Hay algo en las obras de estas autoras que no encontramos en el resto de la producción latinoamericana del momento? ¿Qué es lo que hace que la crítica internacional les preste atención? El objetivo de este estudio es intentar ofrecer algunas respuestas basándonos en la teoría del campo literario de Pierre Bourdieu con respectivos aportes a esta por parte de Pascale Casanova e intentar situar esta generación de autoras en el campo literario nacional e internacional.
Abstract
This paper tries to reconstruct the historical evolution of the Turkish-Ottoman debate on the subject of women's rights and emancipation through a cross-analysis of the three Republican-era ...constitutions. The analysis will refer to the narrative productions of female writers, both Muslim and secular, as an auxiliary source for inquiring legal effects at the sociocultural level with regard to the redefinition of gender relations. I will thus attempt to illustrate, on the one hand, the positions that countered the emergence of feminist discourse and, on the other, the ways in which women's claims took shape within the unique Turkish dialectic between secularism and Islam.
Resumen: Este artículo se centra en Cartucho (1931), de la escritora mexicana Nellie Campobello. Mediante el análisis de tres viñetas, presento la desestabilización de las representaciones ...tradicionales del sujeto masculino, así como la asociación unívoca de las categorías sexo / género. Demuestro cómo sus relatos revelan la heterogeneidad de la prosa sobre la Revolución mexicana, al configurar un espectro de significado diseñado para vincular el hogar con la tierra de sus ancestros. El polvo y la mugre asociadas a la tierra dignifican a las personas y les confieren atributos viriles, sin importar si los personajes son masculinos o femeninos. Tales desplazamientos y cruces apuntalan el arribo de un nuevo orden social.
This article examines nonfiction sexual narratives inspired by foreign thought in Republican China. It highlights female viewpoints to recover their hidden voices in history and shows the ...socio-cultural significance of the gendered reception of cross-cultural theories. I focus on three foreign female thinkers - Ellen Key, Emma Goldman, and Alexandra Kollontai - whose works stood for different schools of free love and drew numerous adherents in China. My study shows a nuanced but telling difference in the focuses of sexual narratives along gender lines. Whereas male writers sought to modernize marriage and liberate sexuality from socio-eugenic perspectives, female writers pursued sexual autonomy from relatively more personal stances. The rhetorical feature of Chinese female essayists, I argue, was essentially iconoclastic towards sexual conventions and yet reticent about free sexuality, as opposed to the progressive eloquence often shown in male writings about sexual matters. In sum, this article illustrates how Chinese female essayists retained gender propriety when openly addressing intimate matters, while male writers glamorized free sexuality and free love as a panacea for nation-strengthening and social/racial progress in a cross-cultural context.
