By observing the growth of a research community, particularly the factors of size and strength of involvement, it is possible to evaluate the vitality of a new field. The emerging technology of ...muography, a new visualization technique to look through gigantic objects with an elementary particle called the muon, is the focus of this study. Recently, the initial applications of muography to the study of structures such as pyramids and volcanoes have been expanding to include more commercial interests such as inspecting social infrastructures and energy and mineral resources. Evolutions of the research networks of muography will be discussed with particular attention to the chronological and lateral structures that could be an indicator of the development of this new technology.This article is part of the Theo Murphy meeting issue 'Cosmic-ray muography'.
What is cultural about vision--or visual about culture? In this ambitious book, Whitney Davis provides new answers to these difficult and important questions by presenting an original framework for ...understanding visual culture. Grounded in the theoretical traditions of art history, A General Theory of Visual Culture argues that, in a fully consolidated visual culture, artifacts and pictures have been made to be seen in a certain way; what Davis calls "visuality" is the visual perspective from which certain culturally constituted aspects of artifacts and pictures are visible to informed viewers. In this book, Davis provides a systematic analysis of visuality and describes how it comes into being as a historical form of vision. Expansive in scope, A General Theory of Visual Culture draws on art history, aesthetics, the psychology of perception, the philosophy of reference, and vision science, as well as visual-cultural studies in history, sociology, and anthropology. It provides penetrating new definitions of form, style, and iconography, and draws important and sometimes surprising conclusions (for example, that vision does not always attain to visual culture, and that visual culture is not always wholly visible). The book uses examples from a variety of cultural traditions, from prehistory to the twentieth century, to support a theory designed to apply to all human traditions of making artifacts and pictures--that is, to visual culture as a worldwide phenomenon.
The chemistry and cultural heritage can be integrated in an interdisciplinary way into teaching the Chemistry, from primary to secondary school and university, including learning about the specifics ...of works of art in the context of their preservation or care. The main purpose of this study is to determine the pre-service Chemistry, Primary school, and Fine art teachers’ views about promoting an interest in the cultural heritage and Chemistry learning through materials of work of art from the chemistry perspective. The study revealed that pre-service teachers do not have sufficient knowledge and experience regarding cultural heritage from the point of view of chemistry (materials and techniques of fine art), and all groups show an interest in the mentioned contents. This integrated and interdisciplinary approach to teach Chemistry and cultural heritage is presented to the pre-service teachers as part of the general elective course that was developed on the basis of this preliminary research about pre-service teachers’ views regarding these topics.
This study examines circulation and interlibrary loan data for the fine art print books collection at an academic library in the southeastern United States. By employing a quantitative analysis using ...descriptive and inferential statistics, a better understanding of the relationships between the circulation of subtypes of titles within the LC “N” (fine arts) call number range, user groups (faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students), and the publication date emerges. The findings of this study show that borrowers prefer books with more recent publication dates, most fine art books circulate one to two times within 10 years, and undergraduate students borrow most of all user groups. The results of the study also promote the understanding that users of the fine art book collection continue to rely heavily upon print books. It also helps to inform future collections decisions and communicate to art liaison librarians best practices for targeting user needs in this area of the collection. The tangible fine art book collection remains essential to the research and scholarship of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students on campus and within the academic community at large.
The paper proposes to analyse survey data among students about the role of drawing in architectural studies. It compares the results obtained by researchers on the role of fine arts and freehand ...drawing compared to digital tools in representing drawing. Architecture students have expressed their support for studying freehand drawing and the subsequent use of this competence in their professional careers. The article also presents the views of international students, and the authors compare the experiences and recommendations of Latvian and international students and experts.
