The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has had a wide range of negative consequences for higher education students. We explored the generalizability of the control-value theory of achievement emotions ...for e-learning, focusing on their antecedents. We involved 17019 higher education students from 13 countries, who completed an online survey during the first wave of the pandemic. A structural equation model revealed that proximal antecedents (e-learning self-efficacy, computer self-efficacy) mediated the relation between environmental antecedents (cognitive and motivational quality of the task) and positive and negative achievement emotions, with some exceptions. The model was invariant across country, area of study, and gender. The rates of achievement emotions varied according to these same factors. Beyond their theoretical relevance, these findings could be the basis for policy recommendations to support stakeholders in coping with the challenges of e-learning and the current and future sequelae of the pandemic.
•We conducted a multi-country online survey on higher education students' emotions.•We assessed achievement emotions related to e-learning during the pandemic.•Environmental antecedents predicted achievement emotions through self-efficacy.•The model was invariant across genders, areas of study, and countries.•Policies should focus on supporting students' achievement emotions and correlates.
Depression, anxiety, and insomnia are all conditions that share a complex bidirectional relationship. Sleep effort is a construct with cognitive and behavioral components that perpetuates insomnia. ...Although many studies have examined the associations between these three variables, no studies have yet examined sleep effort as a mediating variable between anxiety and depression and vice versa. Online versions of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Glasgow Sleep Effort Scale were administered to a sample of 1927 higher education students aged 18–40 years (75.9% women and 76% from 18 to 23 years old). As part of the survey, participants also completed a sociodemographic questionnaire. Mediation analysis indicated that sleep effort mediates the relationship between depression and anxiety, when the former was the predictor and the latter was the criterion. Moreover, sleep effort also mediated the relationship between anxiety and depression when the former was the predictor and the latter was the criterion, albeit in a lesser extent. Sleep effort appears to play a bidirectional mediational role between depression and anxiety, being a potential target for intervention.
There is increasing evidence that being resilient negates the deleterious impacts of stress and promote academic success. To develop an insight into how important resilience is, it is vital to ...explore how higher education students perceive and develop resilience.
The purpose of this review was to gather students' experiences of their resilience journey in an educational setting.
Systematic review and meta-ethnography of qualitative evidence
This review was reported in accordance with the eMERGe guidelines. The data were analysed with reference to the seven steps of meta-ethnography. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation's Confidence in Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative research (GRADE-CERQual) was used to appraise the quality of the evidence.
Three themes emerged: (1) resilience associates with internal resources, (2) resilience develops through meaningful relationships and (3) resilience can be instilled by educational institutions. An individual's trait, outlook and engagement within their social network can influence resilience. The presence and availability of institution-based support services can ease students transition into higher education.
This review provides a basis for influencing further research and curriculum development in ensuring students' well-being and success in school.
•Resilience can be influenced by personal, relational, and environmental factors.•The review lends its findings in the development of future resilience training programs.•Resilience training should encompass skills that develop an individual’s inner strengths and social competency.•Resilience training should be integrated into higher education curriculum to support students' academic journey.
Music education is one of human kind most universal forms of expression and communication, and it can be found in the daily lives of people of all ages and cultures all over the world. As university ...life is a time when students are exposed to a great deal of stress, it can have a negative impact on their mental health. Therefore, it is critical to intervene at this stage in their life so that they are prepared to deal with the pressures they will face in the future. The aim of this study was to see how music education affects university students’ mental health, with emotional intelligence functioning as a moderator. The participants in this research were graduate students pursuing degrees in music education. Non probability convenience sampling technique was used to collect and evaluate the data from 265 students studying in different public and private Chinese universities. The data was gathered at a time, and therefore, the study is cross-sectional. The data was collected from January 2022 till the end of March 2022. Many universities have been closed because to COVID-19, therefore data was also gathered online through emails. The data was analyzed quantitatively using the partial least squares (PLS)–structural equation modeling (SEM) technique. The findings backed up the hypotheses. The results revealed that there is a significant effect of music education on student’s mental health. Also, emotional intelligence as a moderator significantly and positively moderates the relationship between music education and students’ mental health. Music has numerous physiological aspects, and listening to it on a daily basis may be beneficial to your general health and well-being. Furthermore, musicians and music students with a high level of emotional intelligence have a better chance of not just performing well in school, college and university or in the music industry, but also of maintaining mental health and improving it.
Using qualitative exploratory research, we documented the experiences of 90 undergraduate and graduate students on how online education was affecting their learning during the pandemic. Data was ...collected from School of Social Work students at a northeastern public university in the United States. The participants were unsatisfied with the unexpected disruption to online education. However, they had adjusted to digital learning, and stated that they would rather have subpar education than put self and others in danger due to COVID-19. The major challenges that the students encountered are: (a) struggle with online education, (b) difficulty connecting with instructors, (c) lack of motivation, (d) losses, (e) difficulty accessing other learning resources, and (f) unsafe/inaccessible home environment. Recommendations are provided for instructors and administrators to support students in these challenging times.
Our review explores the effectiveness of resilience interventions on improving resilience, reducing depressive symptoms, and overcoming stress symptoms among higher education students. We conducted a ...systematic search in 10 electronic English and Chinese language databases. Twenty-nine randomized, controlled trials (RCTs) met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. Effect sizes from 25 RCTs were calculated for meta-analysis and metaregression. The results of a random effects model reveal that resilience interventions are effective in improving resilience with small effect size (g = .32, 95% CI .15, .49), reducing depressive symptoms with small effect size (g = .25, 95% CI .06, 44), and overcoming stress (g = .22, 95% CI .08, .32). Subgroup analyses conclude that effect sizes of resilience interventions comprising skills that enhance social competency are statistically significantly larger than those of interventions without. In addition, the effect sizes are larger when resilience interventions used synchronous communication and delivered through a mixture of didactic and dialectic approaches. Metaregression reveals that trials rated with low scores in the Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument considerably influence scores in resilience. Our meta-analysis supports the use of resilience interventions as a universal prevention strategy among higher education students. This review ends with implications for practice and directions for further research on developing resilience interventions.
Educational Impact and Implications Statement
The results of this meta-analysis concluded that resilience interventions can potentially build resilience and reduce depressive and stress symptoms among higher education students. Interventions were more effective when they focused on building students' social competency, used synchronous communication, and delivered through a mixture of didactic and dialectic approaches.
The Teaching Campus is a part of the Merdeka Campus program, which presents students from various universities to encourage the teaching and learning process in schools, especially for the elementary ...school education level, and provide opportunities for students to learn and develop themselves through activities outside the lecture class. Objectives Higher education students in Germany are vulnerable to depressive symptoms. Despite ample evidence, no comprehensive review has recently been conducted. Thus, our systematic review and ...meta-analysis aims at describing the extent to which students are affected by depressive symptoms. Methods We searched three databases for articles reporting the prevalence rates of depressiveness among students in Germany published between 2002 and 2023. Pooled prevalence rates were calculated using random effects models, both for the overall sample and for subgroups categorized by gender, study setting, assessment instrument, and whether the study was conducted before or during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results The search yielded 992 records. After screening, 60 articles remained for data extraction. About one out of five students (21.1%) exhibits depressive symptoms. Pooled prevalence rates differ between subgroups, with higher rates during the COVID-19 pandemic than before (30.6% versus 18.0%) and with females being more affected than their male counterparts (29.0% versus 23.1%). Conclusion This review underlines the urgency with which the mental health of students should be addressed at the (higher educational) policy level.
