The essay examines Leonardo Sciascia’s historical narratives starting from the author’s debt to Manzoni’s Storia della Colonna Infame and to Manzoni’s writings on the historical novel. In his work ...with documentary sources and in his investigation into the ways in which the archive is constructed, Sciascia interweaves the discourse of the judge and the historian, but adds to them the discourse of the narrator: the main theme is justice and the abuse of power, that is, the unjust sentences that conceal human perversions behind the reason of State, in the context of an analysis of the eternal evils that afflict Italy. We can also see how, in a common recognition of Manzoni’s authority, Sciascia’s writing meets micro-history in the sign of micrological attention to emblematic testimonies and the search for forms capable of narrating and representing the voices of what has been forgotten.
In modern multimedia society, media like film, computer games and literature have a significant impact on peoples understanding of history, and to a degree forms the development of historical ...consciousness amongst pupils, separate from the teaching in school. The use of film and computer games in history teaching is not uncommon, and has been subject to research, while the use of the historical novel in history teaching is less common. It has also received little attention from scholars. A central question raised for debate in this article is whether the historical novel could be used in the history teaching in the Norwegian upper secondary school, and how this use could be related to the core elements and aims of competence in the subject curriculum. A central argument made is that the use of the historical novel in the school subject history can be connected to the core elements of historical empathy and historical consciousness and promote both core elements when combined with sources and history textbooks. In addition, the article discusses the relationship between the field of history as a scientific subject and the historical novel, and how certain shared characteristics could benefit history teaching.
The novel Helena (1950) is analyzed as Evelyn Waugh’s profound statement on his most significant problems: the possibility to resolve the crises of the 20th-century consciousness through Christianity ...and on the nature of power. Cradle Anglo-Catholics were always suspicious of Waugh, seeing him as an errant Catholic; the paper uses the work of Waugh’s biographers and interpreters to pinpoint his personal reception of Catholicism as the most sophisticated, strictly logical system, firmly grounded in historical fact. Waugh’s story of St. Helena is simultaneously a biography of half-legendary Saint, known for her discovery of the Cross of Golgotha, who thus proved the truthfulness of the founding Christian narrative, and an ironic modern historical novel on the decline of the Roman Empire. Many parallels between the period of Helena’s husband and son (Constantius Chlor and Constantine the Great, respectively) and the catastrophic history of the 20th century are suggested through the devices of anachronism, grotesque, figurative style. The author depicts the persistence of paganism, the use of religious cults as political instrument by cynical persons in their pursuit of individual power. High dose of irony prevents the novel from going in the direction of hagiography; nevertheless the author’s concept of his title character brings to life the most positive and optimistic text in Waugh’s whole oeuvre. By the end of her long life, by converting to Christianity, Helena finds her vocation, her providential mission, completes it, and gains in the fact satisfaction and peace.
Krwawa egzekucja wszystkich członków 52 zbuntowanych rodów stała się immanentnym symbolem powstania chrześcijańskiego państwa bułgarskiego i zajęła ważne miejsce w powieściach historycznych przedstawiających dzieje średniowiecznego państwa.
