A new metal-organic framework compound (MOF@MOF, NUZ-8) comprised of NH
2
-UiO-66 and ZIF-8 under the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the structure modifier was synthesized through an internal extended ...growth method (IEGM). The resulting NUZ-8 emerged the unreported unique polyhedron shape and showed considerable specific surface area (1466.1862 m

/g), excellent adsorption capacity, and fluorescence. NUZ-8 was used as a probe for the rapid optical detection of natural antioxidant quercetin (QCT). Its outstanding selectivity and sensitivity to QCT are derived from the fact that NH
2
-UiO-66 acted as an optical tentacle to perceive QCT in virtue of its luminescence advantages, and ZIF-8 realized the selective enrichment of the QCT through its electron-rich framework structure. The experiments were carried out at an excitation wavelength of 335 nm and an emission wavelength range of 370–530 nm. Under conditions of the investigation, this probe realized the rapid detection of QCT and considerable adsorption capacity with wide linearity (0.3–80 μM), a low detection limit (0.14 μM), and acceptable recoveries (84.0–97.0%) in red wine samples, properties which were superior to many other detection platforms. The synthesis and the use of the above polyhedral composite provide guidance for the application of the IEGM in enhancing chemical sensing and instant determination of drugs.

The proposed scheme of R. rhodochrous IEGM 66 cell (1) interaction with betulin (2): betulin issolution (D) in the cell wall (CW) lipids, betulin transport across the cytoplasmic membrane (CM), ...enzymes of betulin oxidation (EnOx) to betulone (3).

•In the presence of betulin, rhodococci formed heterogeneous cell aggregates.•A high (80%) level of Rhodococcus viability during betulin biotransformation was observed.•Interactions between actinobacterial cells and betulin occurred via direct contact.
The findings of a comprehensive study on R. rhodochrous IEGM 66 and triterpenoid betulin interactions during its biotransformation were reported. In the presence of betulin, rhodococci were shown to form heterogeneous cell aggregates. The enhanced size of the aggregates from 12–15 μm to 25–35μm was consistent with the increase in betulin concentration from 0.5 to 3.0g/L. The confocal laser scanning microscopy indicated a high (80.0%) level of rhodococcal viability during betulin biotransformation regardless of the betulin concentration. Experiments employing the combined confocal laser scanning and atomic force microscopy system confirmed that interactions between actinobacterial cells and betulin occur by direct contact. Transforming activities of the crude cell extracts from R. rhodochrous IEGM 66 were compared, and localization of enzymes catalyzing betulin oxidation to betulone was determined. Additionally the effects of betulin on fatty acid composition of rhodococci and their morphometric and morphofunctional characteristics during biotransformation were studied. Our findings could be used to develop approaches for enhanced betulin bioavailability, thus leading to improved biotransformation efficiency.
AtrioVentricular (AV) and InterVentricular (VV) delay optimization can improve ventricular function in Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) and is usually performed by means of echocardiography. ...St Jude Medical has developed an automated algorhythm which calculates the optimal AV and VV delays (QuickOpt™) based on Intracardiac ElectroGrams, (IEGM), within 2 min. So far, the efficacy of the algorhythm has been tested acutely with standard lead position at right ventricular (RV) apex. Aim of this project is to evaluate the algorhythm performance in the mid- and long-term with RV lead located in mid-septum.
AV and VV delays optimization data were collected in 13 centers using both echocardiographic and QuickOpt™ guidance in CRTD implanted patients provided with this algorhythm. Measurements of the aortic Velocity Time Integral (aVTI) were performed with both methods in a random order at pre-discharge, 6-month and 12-month follow-up.
Fifty-three patients were studied (46 males; age 68 ± 10y; EF 28 ± 7%). Maximum aVTI obtained by echocardiography at different AV delays, were compared with aVTI acquired at AV delays suggested by QuickOpt. The AV Pearson correlations were 0.96 at pre-discharge, 0.95 and 0,98 at 6- and 12- month follow-up respectively. After programming optimal AV, the same approach was used to compare echocardiographic aVTI with aVTI corresponding to the VV values provided by QuickOpt. The VV Pearson Correlation were 0,92 at pre-discharge, 0,88 and 0.90 at 6-month and 12- month follow-up respectively.
IEGM-based optimization provides comparable results with echocardiographic method (maximum aVTI) used as reference with mid-septum RV lead location.
A mathematical model is proposed for describing the biotransformation of methyl phenyl sulfide to (
R
)-methyl phenyl sulfoxide by immobilized
Gordonia terrae
IEGM 136 cells. Kinetic patterns of the ...biotransformation of methyl phenyl sulfide are determined using experimental data on the initial concentration of sulfide and the amount of biocatalyst. The experimental data are compared to simulations of sulfide biotransformation scaling in a laboratory bioreactor. A mathematical model is developed for describing the biotransformation of methyl phenyl sulfide with repeated use of the biocatalyst. The resulting data can be used for optimizing the biotransformation of a wide range of organic aryl alkyl sulfides to optically active sulfoxides.

An analog front-end (AFE) which contains a 1.2 V reconfigurable sensor amplifier and an inverter-based SAR ADC is presented in this paper. This sensor chip will be applied for a multi-electrodes ...catheter-based system for sensing intracardiac signals. The gain and bandwidth of the sensor amplifier can be flexibly configured to deal with the complex intracardiac conditions. The gm/Id design methodology is used to optimize its power efficiency. The inverter-based SAR ADC uses an inverter chain to quantize the sampling signal, which further reduces the hardware cost of the total system. Its inverter chain is biased in the subthreshold working area to achieve low power consumption. Fabricated in a 0.18 μm CMOS mixed-signal process, the total power of this sensor chip is 14.3 μW from a 1.2 V supply. The input-referred noise of the sensor amplifier is 1.89 μV rms , and its PSRR is 86 dB. The active area is 1.14 mm x 0.96 mm.
The morphology of intracardiac electrograms (IEGMs) was used for pacemaker patient workload estimation. The body posture also was studied as another characteristic. The IEGMs were obtained and ...recorded via temporary transcutaneous leads connected to the implanted pacemaker. IEGMs were recorded during exercise and at rest. Recordings at rest were performed in different body positions. The morphology was analyzed visually in order to observe changes due to workload and posture. The recordings were digitized and processed by a computer‐simulated neural network. The network was used as an automatic IEGM classifier based on the morphology. Our results show that the morphology of the IEGM may be used as an indicator of patient workload and body posture. The necessary information is found mainly in the ST segment. We conclude that neural networks seem to be useful in an active cardiac device.
Spiking neural network (NN) architecture that uses Hebbian learning and reinforcement-learning schemes for adapting the synaptic weights is implemented in silicon and performs dynamic optimization ...according to hemodynamic sensor for a cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) device. The spiking NN architecture dynamically changes the atrioventricular (AV) delay and interventricular (VV) interval parameters according to the information provided by the intracardiac electrograms (IEGMs) and hemodynamic sensors. The spiking NN coprocessor performs the adaptive part and is controlled by a deterministic algorithm master controller. The simulated cardiac output obtained with the adaptive CRT device is 30% higher than with a nonadaptive CRT device and is likely to provide improvement in the quality of life for patients with congestive heart failure. The spiking NN architecture shows synaptic plasticity acquired during the learning process. The synaptic plasticity is manifested by a dynamic learning rate parameter that correlates patterns of hemodynamic sensor with the system outputs, i.e., the optimal AV and VV pacing intervals
