Smith took a 12-0 record into the PIAA Championships where he beat 2006 silver medalist and previously unbeaten Eli Morres of Brookville in the semifinals. "Even when he was on crutches, he was lifting upper body stuff and with his other leg," said Pen Argyl coach Scott Kupec, Smith's coach since junior high. "It was amazing to see." "He really took the broken leg in stride," Kupec said. "Mentally, he's a lot older than 17. He knew if he waited and let it heal, he'd have a shot at wrestling again.
Sixteen wrestlers brought home medals from the state's Class 2A wrestling championships that concluded Saturday. Two of those medals were gold, two were silver. Most of those 16 medals were also ...covered with blood, sweat and tears, the colors of the hard work and determination that helped win those medals. As impressive as Northern Lehigh senior Andrew Arnold (125 pounds) and Pen Argyl senior Richie Smith (285) were in winning their gold medals was the way area wrestlers congratulated and consoled each other throughout the grueling three-day tournament, acknowledging each other not only as competitors, but as friends. Tony Comunale (119) barely had any time left on the "blood time" clock to eke out a 3-0 win over Penn-Cambria's Ryan Link in the quarters, then needed to wear a protective face shield with a plug in his nose during a 2-0 semifinal loss to Cody Myers of South Huntingdon. Comunale ended up fourth, wrestling Saturday without the protective facemask, but his courage was certainly worthy of a gold medal.
