Although logotherapy has been shown to relieve other psychological symptoms of patients with cancer, no studies have specifically investigated the effect of logotherapy on anxiety about death and ...existential loneliness in these patients.
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of group logotherapy on anxiety about death and existential loneliness in patients with advanced cancer.
Sixty-three patients who were in the advanced stage of cancer were recruited from 2 hospital oncology services and were randomly assigned to either experimental (n = 31) or control group (n = 32). The intervention group received 10 weekly 2-hour group logotherapy. Templer's Death Anxiety Scale and ELQ were completed pre- and posttreatment.
A 2 × 2 mixed analysis of variance was used to determine the effect of the treatment on each of the dependent variables. The analyses revealed that patients in the logotherapy group reported a significant decrease in anxiety about death and existential loneliness after (vs before) the treatment. No significant decreases were observed in the waitlist control group.
These results have implications for treating death anxiety and feelings of existential loneliness among patients with advanced cancer. They suggest that group logotherapy is highly effective in reducing these existential concerns. Limitations and avenues for future research are discussed.
The study emphasizes that group logotherapy can be considered in oncology care programs by healthcare professionals and in educational curriculums and is suggested for use among caregivers and patients with advanced cancer.
Introduction: Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) is a neurological disorder and can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges in the affected person. Aim: The purpose of this ...study was to compare the effectiveness of joint attention training and logotherapy on primary social communication, anxiety and executive functions of children with autism. Method: The research design was quasi-experimental with pre-test-post-test and control group. The statistical population was children with autism spectrum who referred to psychiatry and psychology centers in Urmia city in 2022. A statistical sample of 45 people was selected by a targeted method and then was randomly placed in three groups of 15 people (two experimental groups and one control group). The required data was collected using questionnaires of basic social communication (Zeboff, 2010), anxiety (Spence, 1999), executive functions (Ballister-Gerard et al., 2000) through two logotherapy intervention methods Owens and LeGoff (2007) 12 sessions of 45 minutes and through shared attention training (Vakilizad and Abedi, 2015) 12 sessions of 90 minutes and then was analyzed with SPSS version 28 software and Multivariate Analysis of Covariance Test. Results: The results showed that joint attention training and logotherapy strengthened basic social communication and executive functions and weakened anxiety in children with autism. However, there is no significant difference between the effectiveness of joint attention training and logotherapy on primary social communication, anxiety and executive functions of children with autism spectrum (P>0.01). Conclusion: Joint attention training and logotherapy lead to strengthening basic social communication and executive functions and weakening anxiety in children with autism spectrum. Therefore, these two programs can be suggested as a suitable intervention to control autistic disorders and improve the quality of life of autistic children.
BACKGROUND: Anxiety is considered as the most common psychiatric disorder and the most common response to stress stimuli. Women with marital conflict experience a significant level of anxiety, which ...can have an adverse effect on other psychological and, in general, quality of life. This study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of two mindfulness and logotherapy methods on anxiety in women with chronic daily headache (CDH) with marital conflict. METHODS: In a randomized clinical trial (RCT), during April 2015 to July 2015, 45 female patients with marital conflict were selected from among the referrers to the psychiatric centers of Hamadan City, Iran, using a purposive sampling method and were assigned into two treatment and control groups through block randomization method. Two mindfulness and logotherapy methods were presented in the form of 8 weekly sessions to the participants of the experimental group and the control group merely received the routine treatments of the center. Evaluation of two anxiety and marital conflict indices was performed at two points before and after treatment. The data were analyzed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and Shefeh test in the software environment of SPSS. RESULTS: The primary outcomes of the study showed that both mindfulness therapy and logotherapy were associated with a decrease in total anxiety scores (P < 0.0010). Secondary outcomes also showed that logotherapy had a significant effect in reducing apparent anxiety (P < 0.0010) and hidden anxiety (P < 0.0040) compared to mindfulness therapy. CONCLUSION: The results of this study, consistent with the research background, suggest that both mindfulness therapy and logotherapy are effective in reducing anxiety syndrome in women. However, the logotherapy was associated with more favorable therapeutic outcomes. These findings can have clinical applications in the context of family interventions.
Background: Because of the occurrence of depression, anxiety, and hopelessness in patients with breast cancer (BC), the present study investigated the effectiveness of group logotherapy (LT) on life ...expectancy and death anxiety in women with BC. Methods: The method of this research was quasi-experimental study with a pre-test, post-test, and control group design. The statistical population of the current research consisted of all women with BC who were referred to Baghdad Teaching Hospital, Baghdad, Iraq, in 2020 for treatment after mastectomy. Out of 157 patients with BC, 40 were selected using the purposive sampling method. Two groups of LT and control were formed with 20 participants. The participants answered the Templer Death Anxiety Scale (DAS) and the Miller Life Expectancy Questionnaire employed via Miller Hope Scale in two pre-test and post-test stages. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. For data analysis, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used. Results: The results of the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) showed that there was a significant difference between post-test of groups in life expectancy (F = 11.24, P ≤ 0.001) and death anxiety (F = 30.78, P ≤ 0.001). Conclusion: LT effectively decreased death anxiety and raised life expectancy in women with BC. Therefore, LT as a psychological intervention can improve the quality of life of people with chronic diseases such as BC.

In his authoritative and extraordinarily influential book Man’s Search for Meaning, psychiatrist Viktor Frankl proposed that any individual’s life task is to find meaning, that meaning cannot be ...obtained without suffering, and that suffering allows meaning to be identified. He also articulated his therapeutic model—logotherapy, the so-called third Viennese school of psychotherapy. This article contemplates why logotherapy currently has seemingly little salience and suggests that the most likely reasons reflect some components being taken over by other therapies and by tenets of positive psychology articulated in recent decades.
Depression, stress, anxiety disorders, and PTSD are some of the mental health problems that are prevalent among immigrant populations despite being underdiagnosed. Stigma, difficulties in adapting, ...cultural barriers, and reduced access to mental health support can seriously hamper their ability to build resilience and recover. Other limitations include assuming that therapies can be universally applied, the lack of sufficient evidence on mental health issues of this population, and the use of therapeutic models developed on Caucasian populations. Here, professional guidance to find the meaning of life through interventions such as logotherapy could help them in this process. The present work systematically reviewed studies investigating the effectiveness of logotherapy in diverse populations and its relevance to a Muslim immigrant population in Europe. Following PRISMA guidelines and the keywords ‘logotherapy, mental health problems, immigrant, and treatment’, the search identified 16 relevant studies conducted since 2005. The studies revealed that logotherapy could be implemented through paradoxical intention, de-reflection, Socratic dialogue, and attitude modification. All these techniques have the potential to help the client to realize long-term relief for underlying stressors associated with migration and settling in a new location. Though data on logotherapy are still scarce, it is evident that it deserves more research so that a structured, evidence-based, and effective therapy for Muslim immigrants in Europe can be developed and tested. In this regard, we propose that the four logotherapy techniques have huge potential in helping psychiatrists develop an effective therapy for mental health problems among these immigrant populations confronting adversity.
The elderly age seems to be a proper time for finding the meaning of life and personal growth compared to other periods of life. The existence of meaning in life of the elderly is an important factor ...for the continuation of their life and finding meaning in life serve an important role in mental health and quality of life of the elderly. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of logotherapy on depression and positive psychological characteristics of the elderly living in Isfahan. The research method was semi-experimental with pretest-posttest and follow-up design with a control group. The participants included all the elderly aged above 60 years old living in Isfahan. First, two centers were selected among Retired Teachers Associations and then, 40 participants were selected purposefully based on inclusion and exclusion criteria and were randomly assigned with an equal ratio into the experimental and control groups (20 participants each). The experiment group were exposed to the Logotherapy for 11 90-minute sessions, while control group did not receive any intervention at this time. Measurs consisted of Yasavage et. al’s elderly depression scale and Rashid’s positive psychological characteristics scale. Utilized to analyze of the data was SPSS-23 software. Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) demonstrated that logotherapy has a significant role in improving depression and positive psychological characteristics of the elderly (P<0.05). According to the findings of the current research, logotherapy can be used as an efficient method at counselling and psychotherapy centers in order to creat good feeling in the elderly, in turn leading to the decrease of their inanity feeling and depression.ReferencesAhmarian, F., Khodabakhsi Koolaee, A., Falsafinejad, M. In Islamic ethics, it is very important to pay attention to the spiritual dimension of man and the role of moral vices in jeopardizing mental health. In this regard, Islamic sages have divided the ...existential powers of man to treat moral vices and stated the rule of reason over other powers of the soul as a criterion for mental health. They refer to moral virtues as values that are essential for mental health. Islamic sages have proposed solutions for the treatment of moral diseases, among them: modification of attitude, spiritual explanations, and treatment based on the tendency to virtue versus moral vice. Considering that in Islamic ethics moral vices are mentioned as psychological diseases and methods for their treatment are stated, these methods can be used in the treatment of psychological disorders as well. Our goal in this research is to provide guidance for developing a native Islamic model based on the role of Islamic virtue ethics in CBT and Logotherapy, which are two important theories in contemporary psychotherapy, considering the multidimensional nature of human beings and the influence of these dimensions on each other.
