O presente estudo avaliou o efeito de três anestésicos em três concentrações, o mentol (C10H20O) (1%; 1,5%; 2%), o eugenol (C10H12O2) (0,5%; 1%; 1,5%) e o cloreto de magnésio (MgCl2) (4%;7%;10%), ...diluídos em água destilada, sobre fêmeas do gastrópode Littoraria angulifera. Para cada concentração foram utilizadas 20 fêmeas (total = 180), com altura da concha entre 18,3 e 26,1 mm, coletadas no mesmo local. Foram observados os tempos de indução e de recuperação do efeito sedativo, assim como a sobrevivência. Os animais foram mantidos em aquários a uma temperatura laboratorial de 25±1°C e as observações foram feitas a cada 30 minutos após a anestesia, durante 2 horas. Após o término do experimento, os animais foram mantidos nos aquários e observados por 15 dias quanto í sobrevivência. Apenas o MgCl2 causou efeito sedativo sobre L. angulifera, sendo que a 4% e a 7% observou-se sedação de 20% e de 95% dos animais, respectivamente, após 2 horas de anestesia, enquanto que a 10%, todos os animais foram anestesiados em 1 hora. Em conclusão, L. angulifera pode ser anestesiada de forma eficiente em uma solução de 10% de MgCl2 durante 1 h e a sua recuperação ocorre ao fim de 30 minutos sem nenhum efeito colateral evidente no comportamento e na sobrevivência.
Objetivo avaliar a efetividade da goma de mascar mentolada em aliviar a intensidade e o desconforto da sede do paciente cirúrgico no período pré-operatório. Método ensaio clínico controlado ...randomizado, com 102 pacientes em período pré-operatório, aleatorizados em grupo-controle, com cuidado usual, e grupo experimental, que recebeu goma de mascar mentolada, a variável de tratamento do estudo. O desfecho clínico primário foi a variação da intensidade da sede, avaliada pela Escala Verbal Numérica, e o secundário, a variação do desconforto da sede, avaliada pela Escala de Desconforto da Sede Perioperatória. Teste de Mann-Whitney foi usado para comparar as medidas entre os grupos. Nível de significância adotado de 0,05. Resultados a goma de mascar mentolada reduziu significativamente a intensidade (p<0,001), com d de Cohen de efeito médio, e o desconforto da sede (p<0,001), com d de Cohen de efeito grande. Conclusão a goma de mascar mentolada mostrou-se efetiva na redução da intensidade e do desconforto da sede pré-operatória. A estratégia mostrou-se uma opção inovadora, viável e segura no uso para o paciente cirúrgico, no manejo da sede pré-operatória, em cirurgias eletivas. NCT: 03200197.
Objective to evaluate the effectiveness of menthol chewing gum, in the relief of the intensity and discomfort of the surgical patient’s thirst in the preoperative period. Method a randomized controlled trial, with 102 patients in the preoperative period, randomized in a control group, with usual care, and an experimental group, which received menthol gum, which was the study treatment variable. The primary clinical outcome was the variation in thirst intensity, evaluated by the Numeral Verbal Scale, and the secondary, the variation of the discomfort of thirst, evaluated by the Perioperative Thirst Discomfort Scale. Mann-Whitney test was used to compare measures between groups. The significance level adopted was of 0.05. Results menthol chewing gum significantly reduced the intensity (p <0.001), with Cohen’s medium-effect d, and thirst discomfort (p <0.001), with a large-effect Cohen’s d. Conclusion menthol chewing gum was effective in reducing the intensity and discomfort of preoperative thirst. The strategy proved to be an innovative, feasible and safe option in the use for the surgical patient, in the management of the preoperative thirst, in elective surgeries. NCT: 03200197.
Objetivo evaluar la efectividad de la goma de mascar mentolada en aliviar la intensidad y la incomodidad de la sed del paciente quirúrgico en el período preoperatorio. Método ensayo clínico controlado aleatorizado, con 102 pacientes en período preoperatorio, aleatorizados en grupo control, con cuidado usual, y grupo experimental, que recibió goma de mascar mentolada, la variable de tratamiento del estudio. El resultado clínico primario fue la variación de la intensidad de la sed, evaluada por la Escala Verbal Numérica, y el secundario, la variación de la incomodidad de la sed, evaluada por la Escala de Desconocimiento de la Sede Perioperatoria. La prueba de Mann-Whitney fue utilizada para comparar las medidas entre los grupos. Nivel de significancia adoptado de 0,05. Resultados la goma de mascar mentolada redujo significativamente la intensidad (p <0,001), con d de Cohen de efecto promedio, y el malestar de la sed (p <0,001), con d de Cohen de efecto grande. Conclusión la goma de mascar mentolada se mostró efectiva en la reducción de la intensidad y de la incomodidad de la sed preoperatoria. La estrategia se mostró una opción innovadora, viable y segura en el uso para el paciente quirúrgico, en el manejo de la sed preoperatoria, en cirugías electivas. NCT: 03200197.
ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of the menthol package (lip hydration and ice popsicles) compared to a package of non-menthol measures (lip hydration and ice popsicles) as a way to ...relieve thirst in patients in the Anesthetic Recovery Room. Method: Randomized and parallel trial study, with 120 patients randomized patients in an experimental group - menthol measurements (n=59) and control group - measures without menthol (n = 61). Results: There was a significant (p<0.05) decrease in intensity, hydration, dryness and taste in the oral cavity between the three moments of assessment/intervention in the two groups. The difference was significant in the experimental group for thirst intensity at the second assessment/intervention point (p<0.05) after a single administration of the menthol package. Conclusion: There was a reduction in thirst intensity in both groups. Patients who received menthol packages showed a significant decrease in intensity after a single evaluation/intervention time. RESUMEN Objetivo: Evaluar la efectividad del paquete de medidas mentoladas (hidratación labial y picolé de hielo) comparado a un paquete de medidas no mentoladas (hidratación labial y picolé de hielo) como un método de alivio de la sed en pacientes en la Sala de Recuperación Post-Anestésica. Método: En un ensayo clínico aleatorizado, paralelo, 120 pacientes aleatorizados en un grupo experimental - medidas mentoladas (n=59) y un grupo control - medidas sin el mentol (n=61). Resultados: Hubo una disminución significativa (p<0,05) sobre la intensidad, hidratación, sequedad y gusto en la cavidad oral entre los tres momentos de evaluación/intervención en los dos grupos, indistintamente. La diferencia fue significativa en el grupo experimental para la intensidad de la sed en el segundo momento de la evaluación/intervención (p<0,05) después de una única administración del paquete de medidas mentoladas. Conclusión: Se encontró una reducción de la intensidad de la sed en los dos grupos. Los pacientes que recibieron las medidas mentoladas presentaron una disminución significativa de la intensidad después de un único momento de evaluación/intervención. NCT: 02869139.

Método: Ensaio clínico randomizado, paralelo, 120 pacientes aleatorizados em grupo experimental - medidas mentoladas (n=59) e grupo controle - medidas sem o mentol (n=61). Resultados: Houve diminuição significativa (p<0,05) sobre a intensidade, hidratação, secura e gosto na cavidade oral entre os três momentos de avaliação/intervenção nos dois grupos indistintamente. A diferença foi significativa no grupo experimental para intensidade da sede no segundo momento de avaliação/intervenção (p<0,05) após uma única administração do pacote de medidas mentoladas. Conclusão: Houve redução da intensidade da sede nos dois grupos. Mentha piperita L. is an aromatic and medicinal species of the family Lamiaceae, known as mint or peppermint, and its leaves and branches produce essential oil rich in menthol. This study aimed to ...evaluate physiological indexes, macro- and micronutrients inthe shootsand essential oil of Mentha piperita L. grown in nutrient solution number 2 of Hoagland and Arnon (1950) with different N, P, K and Mg levels. Shoot length, dry mass of the different organs, total dry mass, leaf area, essential oil yield and composition, and macronutrient (N, P, K, Mg, Ca, S) and micronutrient (Mn, Cu, Fe, Zn) contents in the shoot were evaluated. Plants treated with 65%N/50%P/25%K/100%Mg had a tendency towards longer shoot, greaterroot and leaf blade dry masses, higher essential oil yield, higher menthol levels and lower menthone levels. The results showed that Mentha can be grown in nutrient solution by reducing 65% N, 50% P, 25% K and 100% Mg. This solution had better development compared to the other tested treatments. Therefore,we recommendMentha piperita L. to be grown with such nutrient levels.
ABSTRACT Meniran (Phyllanthus niruri L.) is a plant used to promote hair growth. In this research, ethanolic extract of P.niruri was formulated into lotion because it was more evenly distributed and ...non sticky in use compared to cream and gel. The aims of this research is to determine the hair growth activity of the ethanolic extract of P.niruri and the effect of using menthol 1% as an enhancer in lotion formulation. In this research two formula were being tested where Formula I (F1) without menthol 1% and Formula II (F2) with menthol 1%. The 5% of extract was being used in the formulation. The lotion was applied to the rats skin and the hair length was measured on day 7, 14 and 21, while the hair weight was measured on day 21. The results showed that the average hair length on F2 (12.68 3.13 mm) was longer than the F1 (11.21 2.58 mm) although there was no significant difference between both formulas. The average hair weight on F2 (23.00 10.74 mg) was greater that the F1 which was only 15.83 6.11 mg. Both formulas have a longer hair growth activity compared to normal controls (10.74 0.86 mm). It can be concluded that the lotion of ethanolic extract of P. niruri could promote hair growth in white wistar rats and the addition of 1% menthol as an enhancer gave better hair growth activity in F2 group. ABSTRAK Meniran (Phyllanthus niruri L.) adalah tanaman yang digunakan sebagai penumbuh rambut. Pada penelitian ini, ekstrak etanol meniran diformulasikan dalam sediaan losio karena penyebarannya lebih merata dan tidak lengket dalam penggunaanya dibandingkan sediaan krim dan gel. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui aktivitas sediaan losio ekstrak etanol meniran dan pengaruh penambahan mentol 1% dalam sediaan losio sebagai penumbuh rambut terhadap tikus putih jantan galur wistar. Pada penelitian ini digunakan 2 formula yaitu Formula I (F1) tanpa mentol 1% dan Formula II (F2) dengan penambahan mentol 1%. Konsentrasi ekstrak yang digunakan adalah 5%. Sediaan losio kemudian diaplikasikan pada kulit tikus secara topikal dan selanjutnya panjang rambut diukur pada hari ke-7, 14 dan 21 sedangkan bobot rambut diukur pada hari ke-21. Hasil pengujian aktivitas pertumbuhan rambut pada hari ke-21 menunjukkan rata-rata panjang rambut, pada F2 memiliki aktivitas pertumbuhan rambut yang lebih panjang yaitu 12,68 3,13 mm dari pada F1 yaitu 11,21 2,58 mm meskipun perbedaannya tidak signifikan dan bobot rambut F2 sebesar 23,0010,74 mg lebih berat dari pada F1 yaitu 15,836,11 mg. Kedua formula memiliki aktivitas penumbuh rambut yang lebih panjang dibandingkan dengan kontrol normal (10,740,86 mm). Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah sediaan losio ekstrak etanol P.niruri memiliki aktivitas sebagai penumbuh rambut dan adanya penambahan mentol 1% sebagai enhancer memberikan pertumbuhan rambut yang lebih baik pada kelompok F2.
The main aim of this study was to elucidate whether thermosensitive transient receptor potential channels (thermoTRPs) play a role in controlling autonomic thermoregulation. We investigated whether ...the activation of certain thermoTRPs, TRPV1, TRPV3, TRPM8, and TRPA1, would induce autonomic thermoregulation by administering chemical agonists derived from spices and aroma chemicals of these channels to anesthetized mice. We discovered the following: Capsaicin, a TRPV1 agonist, enhanced thermogenesis and heat diffusion; thymol and ethyl vanillin, TRPV3 agonists, did not have any effect on thermogenesis or heat diffusion; menthol and 1,8-cineole, TRPM8 agonists, enhanced thermogenesis; and allyl isothiocyanate and cinnamaldehyde, TRPA1 agonists, enhanced thermogenesis and inhibited heat diffusion. These results suggest that these thermoTRP agonists derived from spices and aroma chemicals modulate autonomic thermoregulation, except for TRPV3 agonists. Our findings suggest the possibility that each thermoTRP is a key sensor inducing reasonable autonomic thermoregulation according to its own activated temperature range.
O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o crescimento vegetativo e o teor, o rendimento e a composição química do óleo essencial de hortelã‑pimenta (Mentha piperita) cultivada sob diferentes malhas, no ...Município de Lavras, MG. As mudas de hortelã‑pimenta foram cultivadas em cinco ambientes: pleno sol, malha preta, malha aluminizada, malha azul e malha vermelha, todas com 50% de irradiância. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições e cinco plantas por parcela. Foram avaliados os parâmetros: crescimento vegetativo, teor, rendimento e análise química do óleo essencial. Plantas de hortelã‑pimenta cultivadas em pleno sol e sob malhas preta e vermelha produziram maior biomassa seca de folhas e maiores teores e rendimentos do óleo essencial. Entretanto, a pleno sol, o óleo essencial das plantas apresentou maior teor de mentol e, sob as malhas preta e azul, de mentofurano. Portanto, é possível manipular o crescimento das plantas e a produção e a composição química do óleo essencial de hortelã‑pimenta mediante o cultivo sob malhas ou pleno sol.

Contamination of medicinal plants with heavy metals as Pb and Cd can affect the growth and the essential oil production of the plants and represent a risk to those who consume as medicine. This study ...aimed to evaluate the effects of absorption and localization of Pb and Cd on growth, ultrastructural aspects of leaves and essential oil yield and composition of Mentha arvensis, applied on the soil with increasing concentrations (8, 16, 32, 64 and 128mg kg-1). There was a differential absorption of Pb and Cd by M. arvensis mainly concentrated in the roots. Pb was found in small amounts in the leaves while Cd largely exceeded the safety limit without symptoms of toxicity. The ultrastructural analysis revealed the metal accumulation on vesicles surrounding the mitochondria and the presence of electron dense deposits surrounding the mitochondria, nucleus and chloroplasts. Little changes caused by Pb and Cd application were not enough to affect the growth and essential oil yield and composition of M. arvensis
A contaminação de plantas medicinais com Pb e Cd pode afetar o crescimento e a produção de óleo essencial das plantas e representa um risco para quem as consome como medicamento. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos da absorção e localização de Pb e Cd sobre o crescimento das plantas, aspectos ultraestruturais de folhas e sobre o rendimento e composição química do óleo essencial de M. arvensis, os quais foram aplicados ao solo em concentrações crescentes (8, 16, 32, 64 and 128mg kg-1). Houve absorção diferencial de Pb e Cd por M. arvensis, que se concentraram principalmente nas raízes. O Pb foi encontrado em baixas concentrações nas folhas, enquanto o Cd excedeu largamente o limite de segurança sem demonstrar sintomas de toxicidade. As análises ultraestruturais revelaram o acúmulo de metais em vesículas ao redor de mitocôndrias e a presença de depósitos eletrodensos ao redor de mitocôndrias, núcleo e cloroplastos. As pequenas mudanças causadas pela aplicação de Pb e Cd não foram suficientes para afetar o crescimento das plantas e o rendimento e composição química do óleo essencial de M. arvensis
Objectives
Therapy against anisakiasis requires invasive techniques to extract L3, and an effective drug against this nematode is needed. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of ...peppermint essential oil (EO) and its main components against the parasite in comparison to albendazole, a drug currently prescribed to treat anisakiasis.
Methods
We conducted in vitro experiments and studied an experimental model simulating the human infection in Wistar rats. We used polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism to identify A. simplex s.s. and A. pegreffii and determine any differences in their pathogenicity and susceptibility to the treatments.
Results
The in vitro and in vivo experiments both showed that the larvicidal activity of peppermint EO, menthol, menthone and menthyl acetate is higher than that of albendazole. Large stomach lesions were observed in 46.7% of the albendazole‐treated rats, whereas no gastrointestinal lesions were detected in those treated with peppermint EO, menthol, menthyl acetate or menthone.
Conclusions
In this animal model, treatment with peppermint EO or its main components was more effective than was treatment with albendazole. Lesions were more frequently produced by A. simplex s.s. larvae than by A. pegreffii larvae.
Objectifs
La thérapie contre l'anisakiase nécessite des techniques invasives pour extraire le parasite et un médicament efficace contre ce nématode est nécessaire. Le but de cette étude était de déterminer l'efficacité de l'huile essentielle (HE) de menthe poivrée et de ses principales composantes contre le parasite par rapport à l'albendazole, un médicament actuellement prescrit pour traiter l'anisakiase.
Méthodes
Nous avons effectué des expériences in vitro et avons étudié un modèle expérimental simulant l'infection humaine chez des rats Wistar. Nous avons utilisé le polymorphisme de la restriction de la taille des fragments de la réaction en chaîne de la polymérase pour identifier A. simplex s.s. et A. pegreffii et déterminer toutes les différences dans leur pathogénicité et la susceptibilité aux traitements.
Résultats
Les expériences in vitro et in vivo ont toutes les deux montré que l'activité larvicide de l’HE de menthe poivrée, du menthol, du menthone et de l'acétate de menthyle est supérieure à celle de l'albendazole. De larges lésions gastriques ont été observées chez 46,7% des rats traités par l'albendazole, alors qu'aucune lésions gastro‐intestinales n'a été détectée chez les patients traités avec l’HE de menthe poivrée, le menthol, l'acétate de menthyle ou le menthone.
Conclusions
Dans ce modèle animal, le traitement par l’HE de menthe poivrée ou par ses composants principaux a été plus efficace que le traitement avec l'albendazole. Les lésions étaient plus fréquemment produites par les larves de A. simplex s.s. que par celles de A. pegreffii.

El objetivo de este estudio era determinar la eficacia del aceite esencial (AE) de menta y de sus principales componentes frente al parásito, en comparación con el albendazol, un medicamento que actualmente se prescribe para tratar la anisakiasis.
Métodos
Hemos realizado experimentos in vitro y estudiado un modelo experimental que simula la infección humana en ratas Wistar. Utilizamos la reacción en cadena de la polimerasa (PCR) con polimorfismo de los fragmentos de restricción (RFLP) para identificar A. simplex s.s. y A. pegreffii, y determinar las diferencias en su patogenicidad y susceptibilidad a los tratamientos.
Resultados
Tanto los experimentos in vitro como in vivo mostraron que la actividad larvicida del AE de la menta, el mentol, la mentona y el metilacetato es mayor que el del albendazol. Se observaron grandes lesiones estomacales en un 46.7% de todas las ratas tratadas con albendazol, mientras que no había lesiones gastrointestinales en aquellas tratadas con AE de menta, mentol, mentona o metilacetato.
Conclusiones
En este modelo animal, el tratamiento con AE menta o sus principales componentes era más efectivo que el tratamiento con albendazol. Las lesiones eran más frecuentemente producidas por larvas de A. simplex s.s. que por larvas de A. pegreffii.
