2 instances of ritualized mourning, one from the Philippines, the other from Mexico, are examined for signif elements of crowd behavior. The first example is taken from the funeral complex of ...Canaman, Southeast Luzon, Philippines. 3 diff occasions on which the corpse suffered some movement for the last time (last departure from house, final sealing of the coffin & final movement into resting place) triggered responses which were selective, crowd-conditioned, violent but moderated. The 2nd example is observed in the Holy Week folk Catholic commemoration of Christ's trial, death, & taking down from the Cross, by the people of Tzintzuntzan, Mexico. Here, the stimuli of crowd reaction consisted in the removal of spikes from the hands & feet of the Christus in preparation for its lowering from the cross. Crowd behavior characterized by shared recognition of stimuli for culturally specified responses will differ according to roles of crowd members on personal idiosyncracies. Overt reaction expressing response may be learned quickly in crowd situation - if covert response is already present. AA.
