Significance For millennia, Aboriginal Australian peoples have used the extraordinary physicochemical properties of plant exudates from practical applications to cultural expression. We employ ...state-of-the-art spectroscopy to characterize the molecular compositions of well-preserved, native Australian plant exudates (
,
,
, and
) from a historic collection assembled over a century ago. This work demonstrates the benefits of X-ray Raman spectroscopy for the analysis of these complex natural systems. It provides key information for a broader understanding of their terpenoid, aromatic, phenolic, and polysaccharide composition and subsequent chemical classification. It complements Fourier-transform infrared and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry by allowing bulk-sensitive analysis in a fully noninvasive manner and probes molecular features which remain silent in these commonly employed analyses.
Active expansion of the functional area of contemporary museums allows us to speak about museumfication – of history, of culture and its particular phenomena. Collecting, inventorying, quoting, ...archiving, which are some of the key cultural procedures of today, are the essence of the phenomenon of museumfication that expands over our everyday culture and experience. The article is dedicated to the museumfication of reality as an artistic practice and as distinctive feature of the postmodernist worldview. The purpose of the article is to identify the peculiarities of the literary interpretation of the phenomenon of the museum in the novel “Flights” by O. Tokarczuk. Museum is one of the emblematic images of the postmodernist ideological and aesthetical paradigm. Moreover, in this paradigm museum functions as a universal metaphor and a specific model of the world. The novelty of the article is determined by the fact that the first time the image of the museum as one of the key elements of the artistic world in the works of O. Tokarczuk is analysed. Research methods: descriptive, cultural historical, analysis, synthesis of information. Conclusions. The artistic practices of the museumfication take an important place in the novel “Flights” by O. Tokarczuk. It is noteworthy that these practices are not only present at the thematic level of the novel, but the authoress herself employs them in her work, composing “Flights” as a kind of an imaginary museum, a collection of narratives. The image of the museum in the novel embodies a number of features that are distinctive for the postmodern ideological and aesthetic paradigm: the principles of fragmentariness and constellation, implementing baroque naturalistic aesthetics, formal and thematic antagonism in relation to coherent grandnarratives, artistic modeling of the world in the form of panopticon, etc.
Activists and sympathizers of Solidarność, fighting for the freedom of the Polish nation, resorted not only to demonstrations, strikes and rallies. They tried to reach the consciousness of Poles also ...through literary works and iconography referring to historical figures and events. Traces of this activity are kept, among other things, in the State Archive in Opole. Especially rich collections of stamps, cards and postcards from the period of the struggle against communism are gathered in the Eugenia Łysiak and Ryszard Hawryszczuk Collections. Mostly these are materials created by internees in the Grodków and Nysa detention camps. This documentation is an interesting source for research into the activities of regional structures of Solidarność.
Decoration arts are among the most important arts that add aesthetic dimension to goods in traditional arts. As a decorative art technique, openwork has been used in various ways for many years, ...especially in ceramics, weaving, wood and jewelery. Since the openwork technique is a punching or cutting process, this art is also called cutting / hole work. Erzurum is one of the provinces that gives examples of openwork jewelery. In Erzurum, especially in jewelery made with Oltu stone, the openwork technique is frequently used. The study, which focuses on the use of openwork in jewelry, processing and production techniques as a jewelry design, is a qualitative study and depends on descriptive analysis. In the study, the usage areas of openwork from history until today are explained and conceptual information about the openwork of Erzurum is given. As a result of the interview with Zarif Özmen, one of the openwork masters of Erzurum, application examples of openwork in jewelery has been shown in the study. In addition, the study also makes a scientific effort to carry traditional arts to future generations by presenting a historical analysis of the use of openwork in jewelry and by revealing the usage techniques and examples of this art. Finally, It is thought that the study will contribute to both cultural studies and traditional arts.
The fujara became the first element of Slovakia’s traditional music culture proclaimed as Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005 and automatically incorporated in the ...UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008. I was a member of the team that prepared the application documents and witnessed debates among fujara players on what this event would mean for the fujara and its music. The expectations of the performers, instrument makers, and other fans of the fujara were ambiguous. After 15 years since the proclamation, there is an opportunity to show what has happened with the fujara and to what extent their visions have been fulfilled. In this context, the text reflects on important contemporary events related to the life of the fujara: changes in the making technology, unification of its acoustic and intonation features, new ways of its use, presentation of this instrument in the media, as well as processes of a socio-cultural nature focused on the community of fujara players, the education of young performers, and the perception of the fujara in today’s society.
