There is currently a little observational work exploring homeless peoples’ digital networking behaviors, with previous research relying on limited self-report data. This study fills this gap through ...a qualitative thematic analysis of the public subreddit r/homeless. We analyzed the 30 most commented posts on the subreddit from each month of 2019, examining a total of 360 posts. We find that r/homeless contributions primarily center around (a) commentary on social issues, (b) communication of needs and concerns, (c) offering of care and support, and (d) online community management and engagement, suggesting that homeless individuals not only leverage the r/homeless subreddit to gain support and information, but to generate discourse around larger societal issues. Evidence of both bridging and bonding ties was present on the subreddit, with bonding ties being especially valued and sought after by homeless users, contributing to the growing literature on the relationship between social capital, social media, and homelessness.
The popularity of online social networks has created massive social communication among their users and this leads to a huge amount of user-generated communication data. In recent years, ...Cyberbullying has grown into a major problem with the growth of online communication and social media. Cyberbullying has been recognized recently as a serious national health issue among online social network users and developing an efficient detection model holds tremendous practical significance. In this paper, we have proposed set of unique features derived from Twitter; network, activity, user, and tweet content, based on these feature, we developed a supervised machine learning solution for detecting cyberbullying in the Twitter. An evaluation demonstrates that our developed detection model based on our proposed features, achieved results with an area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve of 0.943 and an f-measure of 0.936. These results indicate that the proposed model based on these features provides a feasible solution to detecting Cyberbullying in online communication environments. Finally, we compare result obtained using our proposed features with the result obtained from two baseline features. The comparison outcomes show the significance of the proposed features.
•We propose a set of unique features based on tweets information to detect cyberbullying.•Machine learning model based on the proposed features is developed.•The developed model is effective in detecting cyberbullying in the Twitter network.
This study explores both teachers’ and students’ perceptions regarding the teaching and learning of general education (GE) courses in an online environment, where activities such as pair work, group ...work, and discussion frequently feature. These activities typically necessitate a high level of interaction during class time. This presents an intriguing environment for studying both teachers’ and learners’ experiences due to the abrupt switch to online education in recent years. The participants included 10 Thai teachers of GE courses and 431 Thai and international undergraduates enrolled in the GE courses and taught via an online platform. Online questionnaires and interviews were used to obtain participants’ perceptions of both instructors’ and students’ experiences regarding online learning, particularly in terms of communication difficulties and potential intercultural communication difficulties. The data obtained from the online questionnaire was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The frequency count and the percentage were used for calculating and thematizing the numeric data. Interview data was transcribed, analyzed, and reported based on themes. Key quotes from the participants’ responses were collated and presented in a narrative. The findings revealed the students’ and the lecturers’ perceptions of the benefits of online teaching, challenges, and their future needs.
•Other consumers are influenced by firm mimicry of customer written communications.•Firm mimicry of online customer reviews increases third-party attentiveness & trust.•Firm mimicry of online ...customer reviews increases third-party purchase intentions.•Real-world data shows that mimicry increases the star ratings of subsequent reviews.
In interpersonal communication, humans tend to mimic one another verbally and non-verbally, producing beneficial outcomes for the mimicker. The growth in online communication has moved many manager-customer interactions from in-person to a virtual environment visible to others. Thus, we investigate whether and how managers’ conscious mimicking of wording from consumers’ online reviews affects the purchase intentions of third-party readers of the exchange. We propose that mimicking is a signal of the firm’s attentiveness that increases trust, resulting in increased purchase intentions. A series of experimental studies support this hypothesis under varying conditions, such as whether the valence of the customer’s communication is positive or negative, or the frequency of the use of mimicry varies. An examination of field data finds that the use of mimicry increases the ratings of subsequent reviews. Thus, we provide managers with a straightforward tool that can increase consumer trust, purchase intentions, and subsequent review ratings.
Purpose: The aim of this study is to analyze the hotel Instagram posts that were posted on the social network, to verify people reactions as well as understand their content in terms of ...sustainability. Also, explore the opinions about the posts they did and understand if people can perceive the sustainability work looking at these posts. The article's object of analysis is the Aqua Village Health Resort & SPA hotel unit, a luxury hotel structure that advertises itself as sustainable, with a strong connection to the environment, endogenous and water resources. Design/Methodology/Approach: Authors used a mix approach, with netnography and survey quantitative analysis. Authors used netnography, counting and analyzing the 89 posts that the company made on Instagram, during seven months, between June and December 2022, to verify the types of posts and the reactions they provoked, as well as to assess their content in terms of sustainability. To complementing this analysis, surveys were carried out to test what the first and last post of each of the months under analysis transmits or makes them feel. Findings: The paper provide empirical insights about how to promote a sustainable Hotel on Instagram. Looking at the major conclusions, the paper provide information about the importance of Instagram posts and information about how a hotel can be sustainable and communicate that through social networks. With these results authors can conclude that the hotel does not use Instagram to be promoted as a sustainable player. Research, Practical & Social Implications: Authors suggest future research on how to use social media to promote sustainability. Originality/Value: This paper allows to understand the importance of promote a sustainable business using Instagram.
The wide expansion of digital technologies in higher education has introduced the need for an examination of the added value of various technological tools for quality teaching and active individual ...and collaborative learning. The current study explored whether and how the pedagogical design of an academic course, which developed a variety of digital literacy competencies, supported students in regulating collaborative technology-enhanced learning and helped them cope with the sense of psychological ownership over collaborative learning outcomes. In addition, we examined how these issues were expressed in cognitive, emotional and social aspects of students' perceived learning (Caspi & Blau, 2011). During four semesters, we conducted a qualitative analysis on reflective learning diaries, written by 78 graduate students studying education (N = 1870 codes). The bottom-up analysis focused on learning processes that enabled the development of various digital literacies conceptualized by the Digital Literacy Framework (DLF; Eshet-Alkalai, 2012): photo-visual, information, reproduction, branching, social-emotional, and real-time thinking skills. Furthermore, findings highlighted the importance of self-regulation and learning new technologies as an integral part of digital literacies. In addition, social-emotional statements expressed the development of effective communication and collaboration that enable students to cope with a sense of ownership over learning outcomes, and present different levels of teamwork: sharing, cooperation, and collaboration. Qualitative coding provided a more granulated perspective on perceived learning by differentiating between positive and negative aspects of emotional and social retrospection during the learning process. The findings contribute to educational theory by extending DLF and by providing new insights to the literature on students' perceived learning. We discuss the implications for instructional design and adoption of innovative pedagogy in higher education.

This article deals with potential effects of incidental online exposure to political information (IOEP) on the German electorate during the 2017 national election campaign. We argue that the ...difference in currently unexpected and generally unwanted exposure to political online communication is crucial to the study of IOEP effects. While the former might result in “passive learning,” we hypothesize that–based on psychological reactance theory–the latter may be linked to defensive reactions with undesirable consequences among those who already are alienated from politics. Using cross-sectional data from an online survey among 1100 eligible voters, we can demonstrate that IOEP correlates with reactance in substantial segments. The study’s results are indicating, that the viral character of online campaigning may lead to the opposite of what was intended: voters are not only “trapped,” but might be repelled instead. Further empirical elaboration dealing with causal assumptions is encouraged.

Abstract Introduction Social media use is central to the lives of emerging adults, but the implications of social media use on psychological adjustment are not well understood. The current study ...aimed to examine the impact of time spent using social media on anxiety symptoms and severity in emerging adults. Methods Using a web-based recruitment technique, we collected survey information on social media use and anxiety symptoms and severity in a nationally representative sample of 563 emerging adults from the U.S. (18–22 years-old; 50.2% female; 63.3% Non-Hispanic White). Participants self-reported the amount of time they spent using various social media sites on an average day, and responded to anxiety questionnaires Results from hierarchical regression revealed that more time spent using social media was significantly associated with greater symptoms of dispositional anxiety ( B =0.74, 95% CI=0.59–0.90, p <.001), but was unrelated to recent anxiety-related impairment ( B =0.06, 95% CI=0.00–0.12, p =.051), controlling for age, gender, race/ethnicity, and education level. Logistic regression also revealed that more daily social media use was significantly associated with a greater likelihood of participants scoring above the anxiety severity clinical cut-off indicating a probable anxiety disorder (AOR=1.032, 95% CI=1.004–1.062, p= .028). Limitations Study limitations include the cross-sectional design and reliance on self-report questionnaires. Conclusions Given the ubiquity of social media among emerging adults, who are also at high risk for anxiety disorders, the positive association between social media use and anxiety has important implications for clinicians. Gaining a more nuanced understanding of this relationship will help to inform novel approaches to anxiety treatment.
It is not difficult to find a number of situations that involve opportunities for anonymous communication, especially in various forms of online interaction. The research reported here tests key ...propositions from the receiver response model (RRM) of anonymous communication. We conducted an experiment manipulating the context of a message from an anonymous source and examining its effects on perceived source anonymity, perceived ability and desire to identify the source, and intentions to identify the source. Participants expressed less desire to identify an anonymous source and perceived less ability to identify the source in a mass communication context than an interpersonal context. Desire and ability were positively associated with intentions to identify the source. Perceived anonymity was not different between the two contexts, but was positively associated with desire and negatively associated with ability to identify the anonymous source.
