In this article we propose a study of the representation of Angola's history of the 17th century in the novel A Gloriosa Família (1997), by Angolan writer Pepetela. The study will be based on an interdisciplinary discussion, which intersects the literary with historical and cultural aspects that make up the Angolan past, memory and imagination. In the study we include problems of tradition (VANSINA, 1968) and oralitura ( FALL, 1992), which allow us to understand how the symbolic construction of the elements of the oral tradition make it possible to elaborate a literary representation of Angolan history, giving voice to traditionally marginalized figures of the historical discourse. Like other tribal communities, the oral tradition forms an integral part of the communities of North East India. With the advent of the English missionaries and the introduction of the written ...script, the oral form was generally identified with the illiterate and even the uncivilized. However, orality is now perceived as an important link between the past and the present and a form of preserving community values through writing. Interestingly, for many writers of North East India, written literature introduced by colonialism has become an effective tool for reviving the oral tradition, thus further preserving the authenticity of tribal communities. Hence, writings from this region in recent years often engage with themes of orality in their narratives in order to reclaim their ethnic identity and retrieve their pre-colonial history and values. ‘Writing orality’, then, becomes an effective strategy in rebuilding tribal practices and values in the midst of westernization, advancement in digital technology, and capitalism in contemporary society. The paper aims to examine the interaction between orality and writing in Janice Pariat’s short story collection, Boats on Land (2013). It looks at how the stories in this collection disrupt the hierarchy of the textual over the spoken, a binary that Pariat believes is a colonial construct. The paper aims to show how the valorization of the Khasi oral tradition in the text challenges the pre-established dominance of written literature.
Afro‐descendant oral traditions are powerful modes of political expression that disrupt anti‐black logics within Latin America's mestizaje. Scholarship on Afro‐Latin American anti‐racist mobilisation ...centres on large‐scale, collective action. Instead, in this article, I examine songs and décimas, central forms of Afro‐descendant cultural subjectivity. Drawing on thirteen months of ethnographic fieldwork in La Guaira state, Venezuela, I show how oral traditions are place‐based forms of resistance against anti‐black racism. This research calls on scholars to attend to oral traditions and their geographies as a tool of anti‐racist political mobilisation.
In living their social life, humans are bound by various life guidelines to create harmony between communities. One can be taken from the values contained in literary works traditionally maintained ...among the community, such as oral traditions. This study aims to describe the oral tradition in the Berasan event, a consensus deliberation event by Bengkulu city community leaders preparing for marriage, and explain its noble values as guidelines in social life. Using the descriptive qualitative method, the main data in this research is obtained from sentences delivered by Berasan participants in the form of conversation using the Bengkulu local language. The data was collected directly by listening to the Berasan event, interviewing the customary leader, and using the customary leader's unpublished personal documents. The results showed that the Berasan event is full of figurative sentences, namely rhymes, and proverbs, to convey intentions and goals. While the noble values implied in it include: religious values, humility, unity, empathy, and firmness. It needs to be preserved to maintain the stability of social relations in the Bengkulu city community.
In recent decades, the focus of Folklore Studies has shifted from analysing the products of oral traditions as texts to examining the ways in which people use and produce these items, and the areas ...of study have broadened to include vernacular cultures and genres in diverse verbal and material forms. As evident from the introduction and twelve chapters of this collection, these interests are today shared by several disciplines that cooperate in the area of cultural studies. This book provides insights into current questions about the “nature” of words: it discusses both the inherent essence of vernacular expression and how that essence is tied to various genre-ecological, performative, and material environments. The chapters include studies on the poetics, form, function, performance, and composition of traditional and new vernacular forms, including explorations of hybridity, materiality, and change, as well as critical examinations of archival practices and publication processes.

Homer the Preclassic considers the development of the Homeric poems-in particular the Iliad and Odyssey-during the time when they were still part of the oral tradition. Gregory Nagy traces the ...evolution of rival "Homers" and the different versions of Homeric poetry in this pretextual period, reconstructed over a time frame extending back from the sixth century BCE to the Bronze Age. Accurate in their linguistic detail and surprising in their implications, Nagy's insights conjure the Greeks' nostalgia for the imagined "epic space" of Troy and for the resonances and distortions this mythic past provided to the various Greek constituencies for whom the Homeric poems were so central and definitive.
