The study aimed to examine the effect of a child-friendly design on the pain and anxiety levels during blood draw in children aged 1-3 years and the satisfaction levels of their parents toward the ...environment in which they receive health care services.
The nonrandomized study was conducted with 158 children aged 1-3 years and their parents. Data were obtained with the "Personal Information Form," "Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, Consolability (FLACC) Pain Scale," "Visual Analog Scale (VAS) Anxiety Scale," and "Parental Satisfaction Scale-VAS." Data were collected from the control group before the design and from the intervention group after the design.
During the blood draw, the VAS Anxiety score of the children in the intervention group was 3.17 ± 1.44 and that of the control group was 7.00 ± 2.51 (
= 246.500,
< .001). The FLACC score was 3.94 ± 1.65 in the intervention group and 7.32 ± 2.51 in the control group (
= 915.000,
< .001). The mean satisfaction scores of the parents in the intervention group for the environment where they received health care were 10.00 ± 0.00, and those of the parents in the control group were 4.85 ± 1.68 (test = -11.561,
< .001).
The child-friendly design effectively reduced children's pain and anxiety levels during blood draws and increased parents' satisfaction with the environment in which health care was received.
Implementing a child-friendly design in blood collection units is recommended to alleviate the pain and anxiety associated with children's blood draws, thereby enhancing parental satisfaction with the care provided.
Objective
The current study aimed to evaluate the satisfaction level of parents from telemedicine use in the long-term follow-up of children operated for craniosynostosis during the COVID-19 ...pandemic.
Design
A cross-sectional 9-question survey analysis using Qualtrics survey software.
Setting
An institutional study carried out at a national, tertiary level academic center in the Slovak Republic.
Patients
All patients operated for non-syndromic and syndromic craniosynostosis in our department, who participated in the virtual postoperative follow-up consultations from March 23, 2020, through July 2, 2021, were included in our series. They were enrolled 498 patients, with the parents of 256 children being responding to the survey.
Interventions
The survey remained open until July 16, 2021, two weeks after the last virtual consultations. It was delivered to the parents by e-mail to generate closed 5-point Likert scale responses.
Results
Overall, 72.3% of parents were satisfied with the telemedicine program, and 67.2% found it convenient. Collectively, 89.1% reported that the received instructions were helpful to them. However, only 18.7% of them answered that they would prefer telemedicine consultations in the future.
Conclusion
The results of this study showed a high satisfaction from the parents during the virtual follow-up of children operated for craniosynostosis. However, despite their positive experience with telemedicine, the vast majority of parents stated that they would prefer in-person visits in the future.
Background: Parenting of children with Developmental Disabilities is considered to be a challenging task. This group of parents are at risk for lower levels of being satisfied with caregiving to ...their child compared to parents of typically developing children.
Methods: Participants were recruited from different services in four provinces across Iran to shape a larger research sample. The Parental Satisfaction with Caring for a child with Developmental Disability Index (PSCDDI) was utilized.
Results: Parents of children with DDs particularly parents of children with ASD demonstrated decreased parental satisfaction with caregiving compared with parents of typically developing children. Child behaviour problems, gender and age emerged as a significant predictor of the level of parental satisfaction with caregiving.
Conclusions: These findings suggest that understanding parental satisfaction with caring is an important factor in understanding the challenges associated with caring for a child with DD.
ObjectiveDrawing on the stress process from a life course perspective, this study examines the association between children's overage singlehood and parental psychological distress.
...BackgroundChildren's unfulfilled roles may have a consequence on parental well‐being. Parents may suffer from stress due to children's overage singlehood indicated by unmarried status beyond socially expected ages in some areas of the world. Parents may see it as their own failure to fulfill their parental role and children's failure to establish a family life.
MethodDrawing on data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, this study firstly uses Inverse Probability of Treatment Weighting to handle the pretreatment bias, and it is then further advanced by testing the potential mechanisms underlying the relationship between children's marriage formation and parental well‐being.
ResultsThe results reveal that sons' overage singlehood is associated with a higher level of parental depression. Moreover, parental satisfaction with intergenerational relationships serves as a mediation factor between a son's overage singlehood and parents' depression. Although economic support for parents shows no significant effect on parental depression, it shows a similar pattern in reducing the effect of son's overage singlehood on parental depression.
ConclusionThese findings not only demonstrate the reluctance for cultural change in marriage formation timing and gender‐specific role expectations on children by parents, but also reveal the interplay effects of cultural continuity and the modernization process from an intergenerational perspective.
To modify and translate the Parents' Perceptions of Satisfaction with Care from Pediatric Nurse Practitioners instrument into Chinese, culturally adapt and initially test it to assess parental ...satisfaction with care from all levels of pediatric nurses in a pediatric inpatient care context.
The instrument was translated and culturally adapted following a standardized guideline for the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of self-report measures. Content validity, discriminative validity, internal consistency and test-retest reliability were examined.
Four main issues were identified in the translation and cultural adaptation stage. Modifications were therefore made to the Chinese Parents' Perceptions of Satisfaction with Care from Pediatric Nurses instrument. The item-level content validity indexes for the Chinese instrument ranged between 0.83 and 1.0. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.95, and the intra-class correlation coefficient for test-retest reliability was 0.44.
The Chinese Parents' Perceptions of Satisfaction with Care from Pediatric Nurses instrument has good content validity and internal consistency and can be considered a suitable clinical evaluation tool to measure parental satisfaction with care from pediatric nurses in pediatric inpatient settings in China.
The instrument is anticipated to be useful in strategic planning for Chinese nurse managers responsible for patient safety and quality of care. Additionally, it has the potential to serve as a tool to enable international comparisons in parental satisfaction with care from pediatric nurses after further testing.
•The Chinese Parents’ Perceptions of Satisfaction with Care from Pediatric Nurses (PPSC-PN) instrument was developed.•The Chinese PPSC-PN has good content validity and internal consistency.•The investigation supported the translated version of the Chinese PPSC for evaluating parental satisfaction with pediatric nursing care.
Aim
Bumetanide, a diuretic agent, that reduces intracellular chloride—thereby reinforcing GABAergic inhibition—has been reported to improve core symptoms of autism in children. Given the positive ...results reported from French trials of bumetanide in children with autism, we decided to evaluate its effects in a small‐scale pilot study, in advance of a larger randomised controlled study (RCT).
Methods
This was an open‐label three‐month trial of bumetanide on six children (five boys), aged 3–14 years with autism. Ratings according to the Parental Satisfaction Survey (PASS) were used after four and twelve weeks to assess symptom change. Blood electrolyte status was monitored.
Results
Improvement in the PASS domain “Communicative and cognitive abilities” was marked or very marked in four children, and two had some improvements. Few negative side effects were reported.
Conclusion
Our small cohort responded well to bumetanide, particularly with regard to “Communicative and cognitive abilities”. Taken with the evidence from larger‐scale RCTs, we suggest that bumetanide should be considered for inclusion in ethically approved treatment/management trials for children with autism, subject to rigorous follow‐up in large‐scale RCTs.
to analyse the reliability of 6 age intervals of Spanish web‐based Ages and Stages Questionnaires Third Edition (WB‐ASQ‐3) and parents' acceptability, in a clinical practice context, during COVID‐19 ...pandemic and lockdown in Chile. Cross‐sectional study with a longitudinal component. Internal consistency was analysed by Cronbach's alpha and Pearson product–moment correlation, Pearson's correlations between intervals questionnaires were analysed. Acceptability was determined using a parental satisfaction survey. 1061 children completed 2318 validated questionnaires. Scores were compared with normative sample, except for Gross motor at 8 and 12 months, and Communication at 12, 18 and 24 months, without differences to the previous Chileans sample. In domain analysis, Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.36 to 0.80 and reached 0.74 to 0.81 for the overall test. Strong positive correlation between the domain and overall score was obtained. Correlation between most questionnaires at different ages was positive and significant. Parental surveys show high satisfaction; parents were thankful for being able to monitor children's development. WB‐ASQ‐3 is a reliable and feasible screening system, particularly when the test is taken as a whole, rather than by domains. It is remarkably high acceptability among parents, especially in complex times such as the lockdown and the COVID‐19 pandemic.
Background: Studies focusing on the burden of parents informally caring for offspring with chronic illnesses such as Angelman Syndrome are rare, despite the challenging task of parenting a person ...with such a disabling illness. The present article seeks to study the experience of being a parent and, simultaneously, an informal caregiver for a person with Angelman Syndrome, pursuing to investigate the effects of autonomy on the caregiver burden and how parental satisfaction mediates this relationship. Methods: A mixed methods research was conducted. The quantitative cross-sectional study involved 24 parents of a person with Angelman Syndrome, 75% mothers (Mothers Mage = 42.9, SD= 2.1; Fathers Mage =50.00, SD= 4.4). Five self-reported instruments were applied: sociodemographic questionnaire, Katz Index, Parental Satisfaction Scale and Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale. The qualitative study involved four parents (75% mothers), to whom we conducted a semi-structured interview. Results: The results show that the greater the general satisfaction, the lower the feelings of burden. Also, an indirect effect of autonomy on caregiver burden through general satisfaction was found. The qualitative study revealed the presence of feelings such as burden, sadness, shock, fear, uncertainty, and hope, being the main complaints the lack of personal time and the multitude of responsibilities and activities. All data was collected during a global pandemic situation, inevitably affecting the results of the study. Conclusion: Results confirm the emotional impact of being, simultaneously, a parent and a caregiver of a person diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome. Further studies with this population are needed to find out the risk and protective factors of symptoms of burden within this population.
Abstract
Families (and sometimes courts) make important decisions regarding child physical custody arrangements post‐separation, and shared parenting arrangements are increasingly common in most ...developed countries. Shared arrangements may be differentially associated with parental satisfaction, and these associations may vary across countries. Using data from surveys of separated mothers in Wisconsin and Finland, the present study explores this possibility and is guided by three aims: (a) to identify child and family characteristics associated with sole and shared child placements 6 or more years after separation; (b) to estimate associations of children's post‐separation placements with maternal satisfaction with placements and expense sharing; (c) to examine whether the relationship between post‐separation placement and maternal satisfaction varies by mothers' earnings and the quality of parents' relationships. We find that Finnish mothers with shared placement are more satisfied with their placement than are their counterparts with sole placement, while we find the inverse is true for Wisconsin mothers. Moreover, parental satisfaction with shared placement, overall and relative to sole placement, varies greatly depending on the quality of a mother's relationship with the other parent; and differences in relationship quality in Wisconsin and Finland may help explain the difference in satisfaction with shared placement in the two locations. In both Finland and Wisconsin, we find mothers with shared placement are more satisfied with the way expenses are shared between parents than are mothers with sole placement. Associations between placement and satisfaction are robust to extensive controls for child and maternal characteristics.
Deficit ideologies permeate urban spaces particularly when mostly Black and Brown students attend neighborhood schools. Wealth concentrated in suburban areas further perpetuates stereotypes of urban ...as deficient, but empirical data has yet to interrogate these ideas. Using the National Household Education Survey and regression analysis of variance, this research determines the relationship between parents’ satisfaction with their child’s school and school location (rural, suburban, urban). Then, using race as a moderator, this study aims to ascertain if there is a relationship between parental satisfaction by race and urbanicity of the school their child attends. Implications address the systemic and structural components that contribute to deficit ideologies.
