Abstract The wearing of a headscarf and the veiling especially of the female face or the whole body is a universal phenomenon that occurs in different eras and in different regions and cultures. ...Today, wearing a headscarf has become a symbol of Islam, especially in Western countries, and is often met with Islamophobic rejection. In our study, using a qualitative interview, we questioned 25 young Muslim women of Turkish origin (between 18 and 25 years old, n = 25) living in Germany about their reasons for wearing or not wearing a headscarf and their experiences on account of this decision. The majority ( n = 16) of the predominantly academically educated female participants do not wear a headscarf, primarily for reasons of female attractiveness, an internalized religiosity, and as an expression of the disintegration of the family hierarchy. All female respondents ( n = 7) from families with divorced parents do not wear headscarves, while for the other female respondents ( n = 9) who do not wear headscarves, the family seems to have a more liberal mindset. Reasons for wearing a headscarf are especially a religious attachment to Islam, fashionable self-confidence, and the wish to combine Western emancipation with the traditional dress code (in the form of a hybrid identity). These findings are considered against the background of a psychoanalytic reading of the Quranic suras on veiling (according to F. Benslama) and the Lacanian dialectic of the imaginary and symbolic phallus. The diversity of personal reasons can be described with the concept of a heterogeneous subjectivity, which arises from the clash of Western secular and Turkish-Islamic notions.
Penile cancer is a rare urological malignancy with an age-standardised incidence of 0.8 per 100,000 person-years 1. Given this low incidence it has been suggested that centralised care may improve ...patient outcomes in relation to phallus sparing surgery and nodal assessment 2. We aim to assess the outcomes after 5-years of national centralisation of penile cancer care.
A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data was performed. All patients undergoing penile cancer surgery from January 2018 to December 2022 following centralisation of care were included. The primary outcome was proportion of phallus sparing procedures performed. Secondary outcomes were patient characteristics, histologic outcomes and procedures performed.
124 patients underwent surgery in the study period. Mean age was 64.49 (±13.87). Overall, 82.3% of patients underwent phallus sparing surgery. This remained stable over the 5-year period from 2018 to 2022 at 92%, 85%, 76%, 79% and 78% respectively (p = 0.534). 62.7% had reconstruction performed, including split-thickness skin graft neoglans formation, (57.8% n = 37), preputial flap (32.8% n = 21), glans resurfacing (4.7% n = 3), shaft advancement flap (1.6% n = 1), penile shaft skin graft (1.6% n = 1), and partial penectomy with urethral centralisation (1.6% n = 1). Phallus preservation was not affected by positive nodal status (OR 0.75 95% CI 0.249–2.266, p = 0.564) or T-stage ≥1b (OR 0.51 95% CI 0.153–1.711, p = 0.276). There has been a significant reduction in Nx nodal status from 64% in 2017 to 15% in 2021 (p = 0.009).
Centralisation of treatment for rare malignancies such as penile cancer may improve oncologic outcomes and rates of phallus preservation. This study has shown centralisation to has a high rate of phallus preservation. Further long-term analysis of outcomes in Ireland is required.
•50 penile cancer cases are treated annually in Ireland in the National Centre.•Shared-decision making is paramount for satisfactory functional outcomes.•Penile cancer centralisation has led to high rates of phallus preservation (82.3%).•Nx nodal status was significantly reduced following centralisation.•Advanced age associated with higher T-stage and lower phallus preservation rates.

The goal of this research is to investigate and identify wild mushrooms that naturally occur in the Erbil Governorate, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, in various areas and during various seasons.
Abstract The sexing of species is an important tool for population management. In tortoises and turtles, sexing is usually done according to secondary characteristics, such as plastron morphology or ...phallus eversion techniques. In this paper, we present the phallus eversion method and compare its efficiency to other existing techniques. This new method aims at shortening the management time and reducing the physical aftereffects on the animals, fostering the clinical and reproductive management of Geoffroy’s side-necked turtle (Phrynops geoffroanus) and related species. A sample of fifty individuals was taken in the central region of Piauí state, Northeastern Brazil. The proposed method consisted of moving the head from its resting position. The methods achieving a success rate higher than 80% were compared to each other as for the stimulation time required for phallus eversion. The method as here proposed achieved 100% efficiency in the sex determination of specimens with a linear carapace length between 10 and 34 cm. Also, when compared to the second most efficient method, it substantially reduced the time needed for managing the specimens (91%), avoiding possible sequelae in the individuals handled.

These findings contribute to the preservation and further understanding of traditional Malay wedding culture and may also be useful in the context of the preservation of similar cultures and customs around the world.
Most people believe in a statement that ‘All men are same’, even most men have taken this thing for granted that at the end they are going to be entitled to the same statement. So most of them hardly ...try to question the basis of the same. A few men engaged in humanities or social sciences are aware of things otherwise most of the men merely step in this tangled zone of masculinity-femininity or the bigger picture as gender. It has been taken for granted that gender studies mean women studies, homosexuality is not even landed yet, there are no such concepts like masculinity/femininity/gender-inequality etc. Without questioning or inquiring the system, blindly believing later following whatever one has been asking to perform is the current state of role-performance of the society. Forget about gender equality. Still, men are not aware of how their deeds disadvantage their female counterparts. The paper investigates the ways in which sex-roles were assigned/imposed, implied and performed and these sex-roles/stereotypes lead to identity assertion, conflict, violence etc. that results into disadvantaging women from their fundamental rights.
This case report presents a rare occurrence of isolated bladder exstrophy with a normal phallus in a one-day-old male newborn. The patient also presented with imperforated anus, congenital heart ...disease, and a left ectopic kidney. Surgical interventions included cut-back anoplasty, bilateral ureteral reimplantation, and primary bladder closure in a single operation, resulting in a successful outcome without complications. Three months of follow-up showed satisfactory results.
Maintaining the length, rigidity, and appearance of a reconstructed phallus in the long term has been challenging for phalloplasty and may depend on choosing the optimal implanted stiffener. The aim ...of this study was to determine the best type of stiffener for a reconstructed phallus regarding aesthetic and functional parameters.
From 1987 to 2018, 376 individuals underwent phalloplasty at a single institution of which 81 met the following inclusion criteria: biological male gender, age between 18 and 60 years, radial forearm flap for tube-within-a-tube phalloplasty with rib cartilage and secondary glans sculpting and unimpaired urination preoperatively. Those were divided into three groups with regard to different types of autologous rib cartilage stiffener. A group with a cartilage strip, T-shaped cartilage, and mushroom-shaped cartilage group were evaluated regarding preserved length and aesthetic features of the phallus during a minimum period of 12 months. The rib cartilage length in the phallus was 10.5 cm in all groups.
The length of the phallus was 10.8 ± 0.5 cm in the cartilage strip group, 11.3 ± 0.3 cm in the T-shaped cartilage group and 11.3 ± 0.3 cm in the mushroom-shaped cartilage group at 1-year postoperatively. The aesthetic appearance score of mushroom-shaped cartilage group was 1.67 ± 0.48, significantly higher than the cartilage strip group (1.38 ± 0.50, p = 0.03) at 1 year after surgery.
The mushroom-shaped autologous rib cartilage group showed superior length preservation and aesthetic appearance and appeared as the best type of stiffener for one-phase phalloplasty.
In Bodies That Matter, renowned theorist and philosopher Judith Butler argues that theories of gender need to return to the most material dimension of sex and sexuality: the body. Butler offers a ...brilliant reworking of the body, examining how the power of heterosexual hegemony forms the "matter" of bodies, sex, and gender. Butler argues that power operates to constrain sex from the start, delimiting what counts as a viable sex. She clarifies the notion of "performativity" introduced in Gender Trouble and via bold readings of Plato, Irigaray, Lacan, and Freud explores the meaning of a citational politics. She also draws on documentary and literature with compelling interpretations of the film Paris is Burning, Nella Larsen's Passing, and short stories by Willa Cather.
In the oral and written folktale tradition of the Akan people of Ghana, Kweku Ananse is the archetypal trickster. Simultaneously, he is divinity and mortal, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic, mind and ...matter, culture hero and comical villain. Though the phenomenon of Ananse has been widely studied, the question of Ananse’s sexually-oriented verbal traps has received very little or no attention. The present essay attempts to contribute towards filling this gap by raising fundamental questions about Ananse’s language. What linguistic stratagem informs the apparent ease with which he appropriates other people’s wives? We find that as the quintessential linguist, Ananse’s mastery of rhetorical indirection is fundamental to his success as a libertine. The essay examines the forms of rhetorical indirection and linguistic stratagem by which Ananse negotiates sex, whether he is taking advantage of a friend’s wife, seducing the king’s daughter or appropriating Nana Nyakopon the Supreme God’s spouse.
