Existing scholarly discussions of theatrical realism have been predominantly limited to 19th-century European and Russian theater, with little attention paid to wider explorations and alternative ...definitions of the practice. Examining theater forms and artists from China, Japan, and Korea, Realisms in East Asian Performance brings together a group of theater historians to reconsider realism through the performing arts of East Asia. The book’s contributors emphasize trans-regional conversations and activate inter-Asian dialogues on theatrical production. Tracing historical trajectories, starting from premodern periods through today, the book seeks to understand realisms’ multiple origins, forms, and cultural significances, and examines their continuities, disruptions, and divergences. In its diversity of topics, geographic locations, and time periods, Realisms in East Asian Performance aims to globalize and de-center the dominant narratives surrounding realism in theater, and revise assumptions about the spectacular and theatrical forms of Asian performance. Understanding realism as a powerful representational style, chapters collectively reevaluate acts of representation on stage not just for East Asia, but for theater and performance studies more broadly.
As the main diplomatic strategy of the Philippines towards China, the hedging strategy has been practiced for a long time. In recent years, with the acceleration of Sino-American Geopolitical ...Competition, as well as the transfer of power in the Asia Pacific region, Southeast Asian countries are facing new strategic decision-making pressure. From the perspective of neoclassical realism, systemic pressure is transmitted through internal factors within a country, thereby determining diplomatic strategy. For the Philippines, the systemic pressure brought about by the Sino-U.S. competition serves as the independent variable, while the domestic security and economic development needs of the Philippines serve as intervention variables, jointly influencing diplomatic strategy. Through analysis, it can be seen that in the new stage of the Sino-U.S. competition, the hedging strategy of the Philippines has changed. During the Duterte period, the Philippines implemented a friendly strategy towards China of “military proximity to the United States and economic contact with China”. After Marcos Jr. came to power, there was a trend of partial checks and balances in the Philippines’ policy toward China. Overall, it still shows a major country balance orientation and will maintain this characteristic in the short term.
In this paper, Critical Realism is used as a theoretical framework to show that diversity is an asset to science not a threat. Critical Realism situates the reliability and reproducibility of science ...in the realm of the real and thus relocates the notion of “objectivity” from the person of the scientist to the process of science. This means that it no longer necessary to attempt to minimise the person of the scientist in pursuit of rigorous knowledge. The implication is that diversity both in terms of intellectual training (within limits) and in terms of being multicultural, gender, sexuality, multilingual, is revealed to be an asset. This is because the construction of knowledge draws on personal experience and having people with divergent experience interrogating the same problem is more likely to provide a reliable, reproducible solution. In the latter parts of the paper, the implications for teaching are described. In addition, it is demonstrated that this argument can be extended into different knowledge areas.

With ever‐increasing display resolution for wide field‐of‐view displays—such as head‐mounted displays or 8k projectors—shading has become the major computational cost in rasterization. To reduce ...computational effort, we propose an algorithm that only shades visible features of the image while cost‐effectively interpolating the remaining features without affecting perceived quality. In contrast to previous approaches we do not only simulate acuity falloff but also introduce a sampling scheme that incorporates multiple aspects of the human visual system: acuity, eye motion, contrast (stemming from geometry, material or lighting properties), and brightness adaptation. Our sampling scheme is incorporated into a deferred shading pipeline to shade the image's perceptually relevant fragments while a pull‐push algorithm interpolates the radiance for the rest of the image. Our approach does not impose any restrictions on the performed shading. We conduct a number of psycho‐visual experiments to validate scene‐ and task‐independence of our approach. The number of fragments that need to be shaded is reduced by 50 % to 80 %. Our algorithm scales favorably with increasing resolution and field‐of‐view, rendering it well‐suited for head‐mounted displays and wide‐field‐of‐view projection.
In his “Supervenience arguments against robust moral realism”, Wilson Mendonça sets out to defend robust moral realism (the thesis that moral properties are not identical to natural properties) ...against the Explanatory Argument based on Supervenience. According to this argument, robust realism is unable to account for specific supervenience facts; given that the identification of moral and natural properties allows one to account for such facts, robust realism has an explanatory disadvantage vis-à-vis reductive realism. Mendonça’s answer consists in holding (i) that reductive realism has trouble accounting for the asymmetric character of specific supervenience facts and (ii) that the notion of reduction by analysis, which allows one to properly explain specific supervenience facts, supports only a weak form of reductionism that is compatible with robust realism. I argue that these claims are false and that, therefore, Mendonça fails to show that the Explanatory Argument is not a threat to robust realism.

Avatars are becoming increasingly popular in contemporary marketing strategies, but their effectiveness for achieving performance outcomes (e.g., purchase likelihood) varies widely in practice. ...Related academic literature is fragmented, lacking both definitional consistency and conceptual clarity. This article makes three main contributions to avatar theory and managerial practice. First, to address ambiguity with respect to its definition, this study identifies and critically evaluates key conceptual elements of the term avatar, offers a definition derived from this analysis, and provides a typology of avatars’ design elements. Second, the proposed 2 × 2 avatar taxonomy suggests that the alignment of an avatar’s form realism and behavioral realism, across different contingencies, provides a parsimonious explanation for avatar effectiveness. Third, the authors develop an emerging theory of avatar marketing by triangulating insights from fundamental elements of avatars, a synthesis of extant research, and business practices. This framework integrates key theoretical insights, research propositions, and important managerial implications for this expanding area of marketing strategy. Lastly, the authors outline a research program to test the propositions and insights as well as advance future research.
