This study examines the adjustment process and the adaptability of the Chinese migrant spouses in Auckland, New Zealand. A total of 97 spouses participated in a survey from a random sample of 200. ...The results suggest that both anticipatory and incountry experiences are relevant to adjustment. The results of the study, specifically suggest that the adjustment process experienced by the Chinese spouses in the New Zealand environment is based on a number of factors such as 1 the amount of information and knowledge of New Zealand they have prior to arrival in New Zealand, 2 the backgrounds of the spouses, 3 their experiences prior to and on arrival in New Zealand, and 4 their ability to cope in the new environment.
The second part of a two-part paper reports the preliminary conclusions derived from the pathfinder phase of a study devoted to a reassessment of the information needs of academic researchers. ...Proceeding from the notion that long-established research information needs may not have remained wholly unaffected by the changing realities of the knowledge society, this exploration of researchers' current information requirements and information seeking practices has been undertaken with a special emphasis on examining the validity of anything and everything we have customarily been holding true as to the information component of academic research work. The groundwork for the investigation has been laid down in a pilot project of seven in-depth critical incident method-based information needs interviews with faculty at the University of Haifa (Israel). The qualitative data thus obtained as to researchers' information needs, how they go about meeting these needs, and the barriers they encounter in the process have been analysed within the comprehensive framework proposed by Nicholas for a systematic description of information needs. The ensuing evaluation reported here considers 11 aspects of the present-day academic researcher's information needs. With the first part of the paper focusing on the insights gained into the two major aspects of subject and function, the subsequent discussion of the remaining aspects rounds out this portrayal of research information needs.
Figure 2 shows the extent of international collaboration expressed as percentages of co-authored articles. Overall, this information reveals that a higher proportion of the Colombian publications ...were written in collaboration with foreign researchers than of the Brazilian publications. Thus Colombian and Brazilian researchers have 24 per cent and 11 per cent respectively of their publications co-authored with colleagues from the US.
Provider: - Institution: - Data provided by Europeana Collections- Purpose – This paper aims to present the semantic content identifier (SCI), a permanent identifier, computed through a linear-time ...onion-peeling algorithm that enables the extraction of semantic features from a text, and the integration of this information within the permanent identifier. Design/methodology/approach – The authors employ SCI to propose a mechanism for simultaneously checking the authenticity and degrees of similarity between different information objects, and present an empirical investigation of the method. A management scenario for the control of the authentication process and the detection of the degree of violation of documents is proposed. Findings – Such a mechanism could be adopted as a component of libraries’ strategy for the protection of the copyrights for documents published on the web. Practical implications – The use of the proposed numeric code can be utilised efficiently as a constituent part of the digital object identifier (DOI) system, making its computation more efficient and meaningful. Originality/value – The identifier proposed in the paper can result in a more efficient index for identifying and retrieving objects in a digital library, as well as online repositories and commercial applications that can handle information retrieval requests more effectively.- Περιέχει το πλήρες κείμενο- All metadata published by Europeana are available free of restriction under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication. Purpose - To identify the papers, and publishing journals, describing psychiatry, surgery and paediatrics research funded by the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK. To make comparisons with ...non-NHS research and examine the journal impact factors, and importance to clinicians, of journals publishing the most NHS research. To consider the implications, including those for research assessment.Design methodology approach - Existing databases were examined: the research outputs database (ROD), which contains information on UK biomedical papers; NHS ROD, which contains details of papers on ROD funded by the NHS; lists of journal impact factors. These were combined with selective findings from surveys conducted to identify journals read and viewed as important for clinical practice by psychiatrists, surgeons and paediatricians.Findings - In each specialty many papers publish NHS-funded research and they out-number the non-NHS papers in the ROD. They appear in a wide range of journals but in each specialty one journal is clearly the most used. The impact factors of journals publishing the most NHS research vary considerably. In each specialty the journal containing most NHS publications is widely perceived to be important by clinicians.Research limitations implications - Much NHS-funded research is also funded by other bodies. Clinician survey response rates were between 38 per cent and 47 per cent. The analysis could be extended to other specialties.Practical implications - Papers published in the few journals in each specialty that are viewed as important by clinicians could be given additional credit in assessments.Originality value - This paper describes outputs from NHS research and shows how assessment could be extended.
This is the final study in a series of six emanating from the UK JISC-funded RoMEO Project (rights metadata for open-archiving), which investigated the intellectual property rights issues relating to ...academic author self-archiving of research papers. It reports the results of a survey of 542 academic authors, showing the level of protection required for their open access research papers. It then describes the selection of an appropriate means of expressing those rights through metadata and the resulting choice of Creative Commons licences. Finally, it outlines proposals for communicating rights metadata via the Open Archives Initiative's Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH).
Purpose - This paper aims to present findings from a survey that aimed to identify the issues around the use and linkage of source and output repositories and the chemistry researchers' expectations ...about their use.Design methodology approach - This survey was performed by means of an online questionnaire and structured interviews with academic and research staff in the field of chemistry. A total of 38 people took part in the online questionnaire survey and 17 participated in face-to-face interviews, accounting for 55 responses in total.Findings - Members of academic and research staff in chemistry from institutions in the UK were, in general, favourably disposed towards the idea of linking research data and published research outputs, believing that this facility would be either a significant advantage or useful for the research conducted in the domain. Further information about the nature of the research that they conduct, the type of data that they produce, the sharing and availability of research data and the use and expectations of source and output repositories is also discussed.Research limitations implications - Interpretation of the results must recognise that the majority of the interviewees worked in the area of theoretical computational chemistry and therefore their views may not be representative of other chemistry research fields.Originality value - Such data was essential for the business analysis that described the functional requirements for the development of the key deliverable of the source-to-output repositories (StORe) project, the pilot middleware, which aimed to facilitate and demonstrate the bi-directional links between source and output repositories. It also enabled the identification of workflows in research practice and contributed to the prime aspiration of the StORe project which was to invest new value to the intellectual products of academic research.
(2021). Iako rezultati upućuju na relativno nisku razinu motivacije i pretežito negativnu percepciju procesa izrade istraživačkoga rada, učenička percepcija istraživanja kao vrlo korisne nastavne prakse daju dobru osnovu za njegovo usavršavanje i daljnju primjenu.
