This study assessed the subjective well-being (SWB), or welfare, of the elderly in retirement homes in Bangkok, and examined related factors, particularly from the perspective of happiness economics, ...since the empirical evidence in this aspect is still limited. Primary data was collected by distributing questionnaires and carrying out in-depth interviews between August 2017 and November 2017. In total, 120 participants were included, of which 60 persons were from public retirement homes (44 women and 16 men) and 60 persons from private retirement homes (40 women and 20 men). The cross-sectional data were analyzed using standard descriptive statistics and estimations of logit regressions. The logit regression results reveal that the following were positively related with SWB/welfare in all regressions as hypothesized: a short distance between the retirement home and a temple/hospital, a retirement home located in the participant’s hometown, and interest in obtaining free college courses. Meanwhile, the coefficients on the need for a higher number of care staff were negative. Among the control variables, being female, being older, completing secondary school, and having plenty of money to spend were strongly and positively associated with SWB/welfare. It was noteworthy that receiving a total Barthel ADL index scores of more than 10 and having family and friends visit regularly (once or a few times a week) played an important role in increasing participants’ SWB/welfare in both public and private retirement homes.
In the Ngaanyatjarra Lands of desert Western Australia, older people are being encouraged to participate meaningfully in student education. This initiative is being led by two of the authors of this ...article, senior Ngaanyatjarra women, both of whom work with the Ngaanyatjarra Lands School with its campuses in eight remote communities spread over hundreds of kilometres. Elderly men and women, some of whom are residents in the Ngaanyatjarra Aged Care home (Ngaanyatjarra Health Service, 2021), are eagerly participating in the planning of bush trips, gathering their traditional resources, seeds, grinding stones, bush resins, recalling stories, songs, and dances—as they prepare for the bush camps with students. During the camps the schoolteachers step back and the elderly lead in what is known as two‐way science. At first glance, this work may look like it is simply focused on the educational needs of students with senior Yarnangu acting in a supporting role. However, this article will demonstrate the continuous connections and responsibilities, laid out in the Tjukurrpa (the Dreaming), between the old and the young, to their ancestral lands. It sets out how according to “Tjukurrpa thinking,” the principal way to provide good care is by helping senior people remain on country with family, pass on their knowledge to younger people, and thus keep strong languages and kurrunpa (people’s spirit) alive.
Building energy simulation (BES) models rely on a variety of different input data, and the more accurate the input data are, the more accurate the model will be in predicting energy use. The ...objective of this paper is to show a method for obtaining higher accuracy in building energy simulations of existing buildings by combining time diaries with data from logged measurements, and also to show that more variety is needed in template values of user input data in different kinds of buildings. The case studied in this article is a retirement home in Linköping, Sweden. Results from time diaries and interviews were combined with logged measurements of electricity, temperature, and CO2 levels to create detailed occupant behavior schedules for use in BES models. Two BES models were compared, one with highly detailed schedules of occupancy, electricity use, and airing, and one using standardized input data of occupant behavior. The largest differences between the models could be seen in energy losses due to airing and in household electricity use, where the one with standardized user input data had a higher amount of electricity use and less losses due to airing of 39% and 99%, respectively. Time diaries and interviews, together with logged measurements, can be great tools to detect behavior that affects energy use in buildings. They can also be used to create detailed schedules and behavioral models, and to help develop standardized user input data for more types of buildings. This will help improve the accuracy of BES models so the energy efficiency gap can be reduced.
We intended to study unaddressed psychosocial and spiritual needs among older people (of at least 65 years of age) living in nine residential/nursing homes in Bavaria in Southern Germany. We ...conducted an anonymous cross-sectional study with standardised questionnaires (i.e., Spiritual Needs Questionnaire, Brief Multidimensional Life Satisfaction Scale, Schedule for Meaning in Life Evaluation, etc.). Religious needs were predicted best by residents' religious trust. Existential needs and inner peace needs correlated moderately with grief, and were predicted best by family/social support needs. All members of an interdisciplinary team should be trained in the specific competence of recognising older people's unmet spiritual needs. When these needs are recognised, caregivers and relatives have the chance to react.

The Sociocultural Animation Project “Active Ageing in a Retirement Home” designs Animation as an integral part the daily life of the institution and its residents. Using this approach we hope to ...improve quality of life for residents, promoting an environment that helps elderly people live their closing years in an active and satisfactory way. We conclude that Sociocultural Animation is a mode of intervention in all aspects of the life of the elderly, and it is a permanent stimulus for mental, physical and emotional capacities. It acts in facilitating access to a more active and creative life, improves communication in relationships with others, encouraging better preparation for life in a community and it develops personal autonomy.
