We are researching the implications of animal assisted therapy within a social care facility in an attempt to respond to the legal and managerial controversies surrounding the scheme. Our research is part of a societal trend towards recognizing the citizen rights of dependent elderly people, and in particular their social and cultural rights. We are studying important questions relating to the power of ageing people to make their own decisions about their lives. That is our main aim in researching the use of companion animals, which may be a revealing tool when used in an institutional setting. We will begin our work by discussing the practical and theoretical implications of the plan to introduce a trained dog into a nursing home for dependent elderly people. We will first discuss the issues related to the knowledge and understanding of the users which will be highlighted through animal assisted therapy (1st part). Secondly, we will develop the managerial implications related to the implementation of this idea in an institutional framework and the possibility of introducing a new space for reflection and the construction of meaning (2rd part). These elements will be used to develop specifications for the animal assisted therapy project.
An archaeological evaluation at Newstead Residential Care Home, Winster, Derbyshire. No finds or features of archaeological significance were uncovered.
This interdisciplinary, mixed-method research using the explanatory sequential design was undertaken to study one sector of the elderly community’s living condition in Mandaluyong City to determine ...the viability of putting up a privately-funded residential and care facility for them. Sixty-nine senior citizens were surveyed by a group of 4th year business students in 2013 for their feasibility study about an economic housing for the elderly, using a government-published questionnaire. Raw data from these instruments were, by mutual agreement used for this study. Analysis showed that the demographics from the instruments matched with the local government statistics. It was also found out that some respondents who have some source of modest income but feel neglected and lonely signified desire to live in a more quiet, modest but decent living facility away from their noisy and chaotic home environment. Literature search also showed numerous laws, bills, plans, and other government initiatives that provide assistance for the welfare of the elderly. These could be used in addressing or providing ideas to solve the problem at hand. A privately-funded facility proposed under the undergraduate feasibility study was therefore found economically viable after review in the areas of marketing, technical and financial aspects and that government interference was proposed to be solicited. Initially, the findings of this study was formally presented before the officials of Barangay Hulo, Mandaluyong City last May 7, 2015 as an extension project for the concerned elderly of the community. More than 50 senior citizens attended the presentation. Feedback from stakeholders was promising.
Space is characterised by both its material and its social aspects. To examine space perceptions in this holistic understanding it is crucial to combine verbal with visual data and reactive with ...non-reactive methods, because not every perception is verbally expressible. The article starts illustrating a socio-spatial-material concept of space. Based on this it will be displayed how a triangulative research design with visual interview stimuli, participant observation, mental maps, photo do-cumentation, and architectural analysis can enable to get new insights into spatial perceptions. This will be shown by outlining two specific research projects, the first focuses on the space experience and imaginations of elderly people, the second on space perceptions of library users. The projects with their approaches and results clarify the impact of the triangulation of visual data and non-reactive methods in the exploration of spatial perception. Further-more, the contribution of every kind of method will be shown in the discussion of the results and unexpected findings. Finally, the article reveals in a broader context that it is important to combine text-based and visual methods, not only for the collection of data but for the presentation of research results as well.
Today, industrialized countries face the long-term aging of their population. The over-65s may account for 20% of the European population by 2020, and the over-75s comprise the fastest growing age ...group.
This paper presents the preliminary results of a multi-disciplinary project aiming at studying technology supported life in a retirement home. The results of semi-structured interviews conducted with ...a group of 40 (semi-) autonomously living elderly persons are presented. In general they point in the direction of a "differential indication" of technologies in the sense of identifying personal solution for individual needs. Second, results show that the crucial dimension underlying the acceptance of technologies is the notion of personal control. The paper also identifies ten key design factors to build successful applications for elderly people. Finally an initial version of a new system mixing RFID, tactile screen and large display is described.
