Established in 1659 as Misión de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de los Mansos del Paso del Norte, Ciudad Juárez is the oldest colonial settlement on the U.S.-Mexico border-and one of the largest ...industrialized border cities in the world. Since the days of its founding, Juárez has been marked by different forms of conquest and the quest for wealth as an elaborate matrix of gender, class, and ethnic hierarchies struggled for dominance. Juxtaposing the early Spanish invasions of the region with the arrival of late-twentieth-century industrial “conquistadors,” Fragmented Lives, Assembled Parts documents the consequences of imperial history through in-depth ethnographic studies of working-class factory life. By comparing the social and human consequences of recent globalism with the region's pioneer era, Alejandro Lugo demonstrates the ways in which class mobilization is itself constantly being “unmade” at both the international and personal levels for border workers. Both an inside account of maquiladora practices and a rich social history, this is an interdisciplinary survey of the legacies, tropes, economic systems, and gender-based inequalities reflected in a unique cultural landscape. Through a framework of theoretical conceptualizations applied to a range of facets—from multiracial “mestizo” populations to the notions of border “crossings” and “inspections,” as well as the recent brutal killings of working-class women in Ciudad Juárez—Fragmented Lives, Assembled Parts provides a critical understanding of the effect of transnational corporations on contemporary Mexico, calling for official recognition of the desperate need for improved working and living conditions within this community.

A study of how encounters between forestry bureaucrats and indigenous forest managers in Mexico produced official knowledge about forests and the state.
This study aimed to explore a novel, non-segmented based on inverted water outline, and rapid 3D rendering method for identifying the responsible blood vessels for hemifacial spasm. First, the ...software was developed using the free and open-source 3D Slicer to process magnetic resonance images. Outlines of the water region were extracted and rendered in a three-dimensional space. The traditional image re-slicing technique (IMRT) was used for the control group, while non-segmented inverted water outline rendering (NSIWR) was used to observe the relevant blood vessels in the root entry/exit zone (REZ) of patients with hemifacial spasm. The intraoperative exploration results were considered the gold standard for comparing the differences in identifying relevant blood vessels between the two methods. Twenty-five patients were included, and the reconstruction effect evaluation suggested that NSIWR could effectively reconstruct the responsible blood vessels of the cochlea, facial nerve, and REZ. Compared with IMRT, NSIWR effectively improved the diagnosis of the responsible blood vessels in the REZ, clarified their sources and directions, and was consistent with intraoperative results. This study introduced a novel rapid rendering method based on NSIWR, which was successfully applied for hemifacial spasm. The method enhances accuracy in identifying responsible blood vessels in the REZ without needing multi-modal techniques. It has the potential to improve surgical effectiveness and reduce exploration time in treating hemifacial spasm.
The compression of the offending vessel on the facial nerve at root exit zone is considered as the leading cause of hemifacial spasm (HFS). However, the correlation between the severity of spasm and ...the pressure of neurovascular compression (NVC) has not yet been investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical correlation between the severity of HFS and the pressure of NVC.
A prospective study was performed, which included 52 of 151 patients who underwent microvascular decompression. We classified the preoperative spasm severity according to the Cohen scores. Codman intracranial pressure monitoring system was used to measure the NVC pressure at the root exit zone during microvascular decompression. All patients were followed up for 12–24 months.
Herein, the intraoperative pressure readings of NVC were in the range of 21–63 mmHg. The means of the pressure of NVC that corresponded to the Cohen scores (1–4) were 23.00 ± 1.83, 34.91 ± 12.42, 46.50 ± 9.40, and 55.40 ± 3.03 mmHg, respectively. The Spearman's rank correlation established a strong positive correlation between the pressure and the Cohen scores (r = 0.689, P < 0.0001). The simple linear analysis indicated that sex (P = 0.132), duration (P = 0.304), and delayed relief (P = 0.158) were not significantly associated with the pressure. However, a substantial correlation was determined between the pressure values and the time until the complete recovery (r = 0.949, P < 0.0001) of the delayed healing population.
The severity of HFS exhibited a strong positive correlation with the intraoperative offending vessel's pressure values. Thus, the neurovascular pressure is a significant factor in the pathogenesis of HFS.
•The severity of hemifacial spasm exhibited a strong positive correlation with the pressure of the neurovascular compression.•The neurovascular pressure is a significant factor in the pathogenesis of hemifacial spasm.•The occurrence of facial spasm might be related to a specific pressure of the neurovascular compression.
Along the U.S.–Mexico frontier, where border crossings are a daily occurrence for many people, reinforcing borders is also a common activity. Not only does the U.S. Border Patrol strive to hold the ...line against illegal immigrants, but many residents on both sides of the border seek to define and bound themselves apart from groups they perceive as others. This pathfinding ethnography charts the social categories, metaphors, and narratives that inhabitants of El Paso and Ciudad Juárez use to define their group identity and distinguish themselves from others. Pablo Vila draws on over 200 group interviews with more than 900 area residents to describe how Mexican nationals, Mexican immigrants, Mexican Americans, African Americans, and Anglos make sense of themselves and perceive their differences from others. This research uncovers the regionalism by which many northern Mexicans construct their sense of identity, the nationalism that often divides Mexican Americans from Mexican nationals, and the role of ethnicity in setting boundaries among Anglos, Mexicans, and African Americans. Vila also looks at how gender, age, religion, and class intertwine with these factors. He concludes with fascinating excerpts from re-interviews with several informants, who modified their views of other groups when confronted by the author with the narrative character of their identities.
For the first time in English, the stories of two
Dominican national icons in their own words
The letters between Dominican revolutionaries Minerva Mirabal
Reyes and Manolo Tavárez Justo tell an ...intimate story of life and
love under the brutal dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, who held
power in the nation from 1930 to 1961. Leaders in the 14th of June
Movement, Minerva and Manolo were imprisoned multiple times.
Minerva-one of three Mirabal sisters known by the code name "Las
Mariposas" (The Butterflies)-was assassinated with her sisters in
1960; Manolo was killed in 1963. This translation and critical
edition of their correspondence brings their stories to the
English-language readers of the world.
Paired with commentary from the couple's daughter, political
activist Minou Tavárez Mirabal, these 117 letters and telegrams
span from the first notes Minerva and Manolo exchanged while
courting in law school to the last message Manolo sent to
7-year-old Minou before his murder. Translator Heather Hennes
introduces the collection with a history of the Trujillo regime and
its opposition, and the book includes a foreword by Michelle
Bachelet, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Through this volume, readers will discover the human complexities
of the iconic and much-mythologized "Butterfly," Minerva, and will
appreciate the importance of the couple's legacy in the politics
and democratic growth of the country today.

Chemical graph theory has become a significant part of the research. Topological indices are numerical descriptors used to determine physico-chemical properties of chemical compounds. In this work, ...the generalized redefined Zagreb index is defined. This index is applied on several topological indices viz., redefined Zagreb indices (ReZG1(G), ReZG2(G), ReZG3(G)), sum-connectivity Zagreb index (SCI(G)), hyper Zagreb index (HM(G)), harmonic index (H(G)), arithmetic-geometric index (AGI(G)), SK index (SK(G)) and SK1 index (SK1(G)). The above said indices are calculated for aromatic compounds such as boron triangular sheet, borophene chain and melem chain nanostructures. The obtained results are useful in understanding the behaviour of compounds under the study.
Rod Cyclamen pripada porodici Primulaceae.
