Coastal lagoon ecology often changes on progression from the open, well-flushed mouth region to the depositional zone furthest from the open sea. This is generally considered consequent on increasing ...‘confinement’ and associated features, rather than on the often co-occurringly decreasing salinity. The 12 km Rainbow Channel connecting part of Moreton Bay, a microtidal leaky lagoon, to the adjacent Pacific provides a gradient of increasing confinement without any significant salinity change, i.e. a tenfold increase in water residence time for a salinity decrease of <1. Macrobenthic faunal assemblages characterising intertidal Zostera seagrass at strategic points along its length were compared to test whether their nature changed in conformity with confinement models. Results suggest that it does not; faunal abundance, species richness, evenness and composition remaining effectively unchanged along the gradient. Seagrass systems may constitute a special case because they decouple renewal times of the overlying water and local organic enrichment/decomposition; as may leaky lagoons because of their high tidal velocities.

At waterlogged archaeological sites paleolimnological approaches can provide important supporting information about conditions and processes of past human life and human impact on environments around ...former settlements. In this study, subfossil Cladocera and Chironomidae assemblages were analysed from Neolithic lakeside sediments uncovered at Zürich-Parkhaus Opéra (OP), Switzerland. Our main objectives were to assess how periodic settlement phases altered lakeshore environments and aquatic invertebrate communities during the Neolithic. Aquatic invertebrates occurred in considerable numbers throughout the investigated sediment sections, supporting that Neolithic settlements at site OP were established above the lake surface and sedimentation occurred mostly under water. Two separate aquatic invertebrate communities were distinguished: an impacted community within cultural layers and a pre- and post-impacted community in sediments above, below and in between cultural layers. Aquatic invertebrates indicated that human impact likely resulted in surplus organic material load and nutrient input into the water during the cultural periods. This substantially increased biological oxygen demand of the sediments and overall nutrient concentrations of the near-shore water and thereby led to hypoxic conditions. Chironomids showed generally higher amplitude assemblage changes than cladocerans. This could be explained by the very local influence of humans and higher susceptibility of the less mobile chironomids to local hypoxia in and above the sediment. After settlements were abandoned invertebrate assemblages rapidly recovered to pre-impacted states, suggesting their considerable resilience to local human impact. Our results confirm that cladoceran and chironomid remains can trace localised environmental changes associated with human presence and provide important information for the interpretation of prehistoric human activities.

Tolerance values (TVs) based on benthic macroinvertebrates are one of the most widely used tools for monitoring the biological impacts of water pollution, particularly in streams and rivers. We ...compiled TVs of benthic macroinvertebrates from 29 regions around the world to test 11 basic assumptions about pollution tolerance, that: (1) Arthropoda are < tolerant than non-Arthropoda; (2) Insecta < non-Insecta; (3) non-Oligochaeta < Oligochaeta; (4) other macroinvertebrates < Oligochaeta + Chironomidae; (5) other macroinvertebrate taxa < Isopoda + Gastropoda + Hirudinea; (6) Ephemeroptera + Plecoptera + Trichoptera (EPT) < Odonata + Coleoptera + Heteroptera (OCH); (7) EPT < non-EPT insects; (8) Diptera < Insecta; (9) Bivalvia < Gastropoda; (10) Baetidae < other Ephemeroptera; and (11) Hydropsychidae < other Trichoptera. We found that the first eight of these 11 assumptions were supported despite regional variability. In addition, we examined the effect of Best Professional Judgment (BPJ) and non-independence of TVs among countries by performing all analyses using subsets of the original dataset. These subsets included a group based on those systems using TVs that were derived from techniques other than BPJ, and groups based on methods used for TV assignment. The results obtained from these subsets and the entire dataset are similar. We also made seven a priori hypotheses about the regional similarity of TVs based on geography. Only one of these was supported. Development of TVs and the reporting of how they are assigned need to be more rigorous and be better described.

The surface water quality assessment could be based on a combined physical and chemical analysis, but it could also be determined with bioindication methods. Classical physicochemical analysis is in ...most cases more expensive and time-consuming than the bioindication methods. This type of analysis also requires expensive equipment and shows the situation in the water only at the moment of sampling. Although the bioindication methods are often complicated, they allow a relatively inexpensive estimation of the water quality. Moreover, during their implementation, the substances harmful to the environment are not generated, and the obtained results usually reflect the total interaction of all factors and substances to the analyzed living organisms. Indicator organisms or their communities applied to the research, with identified ranges of tolerance to selected factors, could help to determine the physical and chemical parameters of water. This paper presents a bioindication study with an effect of stormwater system on the receiver – the Bystrzyca river, in Lublin, Poland. The level of saprophyty of the river sector was calculated based on the selected species of algae (diatoms and green algae) and the influence of the stormwater discharge on the communities of these organisms was determined.
