Any scientist knows that to be a good scientist, they must conduct thoughtful research; generate high-quality, verifiable results and analyses; and get them into circulation in the scientific ...community. However, what often goes underappreciated is that this good science will likely remain ignored by most of the world if one doesn’t find a way to get it out beyond the scientific community. Unfortunately, when it comes to making our science accessible, we scientists all too often fall short. And that’s when the nonscientist public turn to other nonscientists they can understand. Hence, we find ourselves in a world shaped by a lot of misguided, and often erroneous, information about science.

Peppas is delighted once again to greet their Sigma Xi members. This is the last column he will write in his capacity as president of Sigma Xi. By the time it is published, he will be nearing the end ...of his presidency, and Dr. Marija Strojnik will be taking over. He notes with pleasure that a Greek will be passing the baton to a Slovenian. This small observation shows the internationality of their Society. They are home to thousands of scientists from around the world, scientists who care about what they do, how they do it, their professionalism, and their dedication to achieve something good for this world, for its citizens, and for all their patients.

In my workshops, Storytelling and Storyboarding Science, I teach scientists how to use the narrative techniques and strategies employed in movies to produce persuasive presentations and publications. ...Although the movie Don’t Look Up was initially intended as an allegory about climate change and the idea that decision makers are not listening to scientists, this movie does in fact highlight important issues regarding how scientists communicate science to the wider public. In this article, I discuss how this movie illustrates the challenges that I teach my students to cope with in science communication.
