In his Treatise on Vampires and Revenants (1746), Calmet argued that although Western Europe may have witnessed troublesome revenants in the past, the vampires of Eastern Europe were a unique type of ...undead-corpse. In this paper, I examine the characteristic features of the various types of undead-corpse that supposedly existed in Europe from the medieval period to the Enlightenment, so too the revenants of nineteenthcentury New England. I argue that, unlike other types of undead-corpse, the distinguishing feature of eighteenth-century vampires was their apparent thirst for blood.

Ranciere comments on the social issues regarding the division of labor among the citizens in Plato's Republic. He stresses that everyone is equal and is entitled to do things within his power at ...once, as long as it would not pose great harm to the state. He notes that the only danger lies in confusing orders between artisan and warrior, or warrior and ruler, there can be no exchange of place and function; and that neither can two things be done at the same time without bringing doom to the city.
This article demonstrates an early modern association between the trade of shoemaking and the act of altering the festal calendar. It traces this link through a series of sixteenth- and ...seventeenth-century English literary texts including Thomas Deloney's "Gentle Craft," Thomas Dekker's "Shoemaker's Holiday," and Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" and -- most notably -- "Henry V." The article argues that the depictions of cobblers making holidays resonated with the early modern English politics of ritual observance, and its concluding discussion of the Saint Crispin's Day speech in "Henry V" shows how the play imagines king and cobblers vying for control of England's commemorative practice.
Jacob Boehme, the seventeenth-century mystical philosopher, had a significant influence upon Paul Tillich. In this article I offer a reassessment of the relationship between these two thinkers by ...arguing for an orthodox interpretation of Boehme's doctrine of God that links him more closely with Tillich than recent commentators have suggested. Specifically, I show how Boehme and Tillich stand united against the heterodox Hegel in their presentation of a dynamic process of divinity's self-differentiation and reconciliation that completes itself apart from history rather than within history. This move, I conclude, keeps Boehme and Tillich squarely within the realm of Christian orthodoxy.

This is the first time for me to watch myself from the sidelines. I'm amazed. And to my amazement, the tactic of nonchalance is unsuccessful. The attempt to camouflage the beast of loneliness with ...tiger spots of independence doesn't work. I'm used to putting myself to bed without protest while my sister follows my mother to all her evening lessons and groups. Yet just because I suppress the fear of loneliness, jealousy, and sadness, I do not become one of the others.
