Symbols of the past influence the present, very often dependent on the will of those who currently “weave the story,” to use the expression coined by Olga Tokarczuk.1 This applies in particular to ...national symbols, burdened by historical trauma, whose rank and protection may become handy tools for controlling social and public narratives. In this context, it is the law itself, with its special category of memory laws, that very often turns out to be instrumentally used by the state apparatus to strengthen such narratives. In times of social peace, this kind of state-governed manner of how we remember and perceive symbols remains imperceptible. However, in times of turmoil, symbols can serve as legal weapons against rights and freedoms. Then, the protection of the national anthem or emblem, monuments or graphics may be turned into the de facto protection of the state against its critics. Labelling themselves as the guardians of “historical truth,” the authorities tend to secure the orthodox vision of the past. Importantly, this vision very often remains distant from the official findings of historians. It was exactly in such an ideologically and nationalistically burdened social atmosphere in Poland when Jaś Kapela, Polish poet and activist, decided to perform publicly his protest song. He did so by changing the official wording of the Polish national anthem into a pro-refugee appeal and broadcast it on YouTube, which eventually brought him before Polish courts, including the Supreme Court.
We present a new measurement of the Hubble Constant H sub( 0) and other cosmological parameters based on the joint analysis of three multiply imaged quasar systems with measured gravitational time ...delays. First, we measure the time delay of HE 0435-1223 from 13-yr light curves obtained as part of the COSMOGRAIL project. Companion papers detail the modelling of the main deflectors and line-of-sight effects, and how these data are combined to determine the time-delay distance of HE 0435-1223. Crucially, the measurements are carried out blindly with respect to cosmological parameters in order to avoid confirmation bias. We then combine the time-delay distance of HE 0435-1223 with previous measurements from systems B1608+656 and RXJ1131-1231 to create a Time Delay Strong Lensing probe (TDSL). In flat Lambda cold dark matter ( Lambda CDM) with free matter and energy density, we find H sub( 0) =71.9... km s super( -1) Mpc super( -1) and Omega sub( Lambda )=0.62... This measurement is completely independent of, and in agreement with, the local distance ladder measurements of H sub( 0). We explore more general cosmological models combining TDSL with other probes, illustrating its power to break degeneracies inherent to other methods. The joint constraints from TDSL and Planck are H sub( 0) = 69.2... km s super( -1) Mpc super( -1) , Omega sub( Lambda )=0.70... and Omega sub( k)=0.003+0.004-0.006 in open ...CDM and H sub( 0) =79.0... km s super( -1) Mpc super( -1), Omega sub( de)=0.77... and w=-1.38... in flat wCDM. In combination with Planck and baryon acoustic oscillation data, when relaxing the constraints on the numbers of relativistic species we find N sub( eff) = 3.34... in N sub( eff) Lambda CDM and when relaxing the total mass of neutrinos we find ...m sub( ...) less than or equal to ...0.182 eV in m sub( nu )...CDM. Finally, in an open wCDM in combination with Planck and cosmic microwave background lensing, we find H sub( 0) =77.9... km s super( -1) Mpc super( -1), Omega sub( de) = 0.77..., Omega sub( k) = -0.003... and w=-1.37... The article analyses the use of Latin mottos in the modern world. The main areas of Latin mottos application are medicine, education, in English-speaking countries also territorial symbols and ...sports. For Russian linguistic culture, the revival of the tradition of Latin mottos in personal symbolism has been established. In the field of medicine mottoes-quotations are predominate; in sports specially composed phrases translated into Latin are mainly used; about a third of the mottoes in territorial and personal symbols are quotations. The main values declared in the mottos are providentialism (territorial symbolism in English-speaking countries), diligence and the will to win (sport), an active life position and self-development (personal symbolism in modern Russian culture).
We investigate the internal structure and density profiles of haloes of mass 10...-10... M... in the Evolution and Assembly of Galaxies and their Environment (EAGLE) simulations. These follow the ...formation of galaxies in a ... cold dark matter Universe and include a treatment of the baryon physics thought to be relevant. The EAGLE simulations reproduce the observed present-day galaxy stellar mass function, as well as many other properties of the galaxy population as a function of time. We find significant differences between the masses of haloes in the EAGLE simulations and in simulations that follow only the dark matter component. Nevertheless, haloes are well described by the Navarro-Frenk-White density profile at radii larger than ~5 per cent of the virial radius but, closer to the centre, the presence of stars can produce cuspier profiles. Central enhancements in the total mass profile are most important in haloes of mass 10...-10... M..., where the stellar fraction peaks. Over the radial range where they are well resolved, the resulting galaxy rotation curves are in very good agreement with observational data for galaxies with stellar mass M* < 5 x 10... M... We present an empirical fitting function that describes the total mass profiles and show that its parameters are strongly correlated with halo mass. (ProQuest: ... denotes formulae/symbols omitted.)
This paper investigates the robust design of symbol-level precoding (SLP) for multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink transmission with imperfect channel state information (CSI) ...caused by channel aging. By utilizing the a posteriori channel model based on the widely adopted jointly correlated channel model, the imperfect CSI is modeled as the statistical CSI incorporating the channel mean and channel variance information with spatial correlation. With the signal model in the presence of channel aging, we formulate the signal-to-noise-plus-interference ratio (SINR) balancing and minimum mean square error (MMSE) problems for robust SLP design. The former targets to maximize the minimum SINR across users, while the latter minimizes the mean square error between the received signal and the target constellation point. When it comes to massive MIMO scenarios, the increment in the number of antennas poses a computational complexity challenge, limiting the deployment of SLP schemes. To address such a challenge, we simplify the objective function of the SINR balancing problem and further derive a closed-form SLP scheme. Besides, by approximating the matrix involved in the computation, we modify the proposed algorithm and develop an MMSE-based SLP scheme with lower computation complexity. Simulation results confirm the superiority of the proposed schemes over the state-of-the-art SLP schemes.
Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a promising alternative to orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) for high-mobility communications. We propose a novel multiple-input ...multiple-output (MIMO) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system based on OTFS modulation. We begin by deriving new sensing and communication signal models for the proposed MIMO-OTFS ISAC system that explicitly capture inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI) effects. We then develop a generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) based multi-target detection and delay-Doppler-angle estimation algorithm for MIMO-OTFS radar sensing that can simultaneously mitigate and exploit ISI/ICI effects, to prevent target masking and surpass standard unambiguous detection limits in range/velocity. Moreover, considering two operational modes (discovery/track), we propose an adaptive MIMO-OTFS ISAC transmission strategy. For the discovery mode, we introduce the concept of delay-Doppler (DD) multiplexing, enabling omnidirectional probing of the environment and large virtual array at the OTFS radar receiver. For the track mode, we pursue a directional transmission approach and design an OTFS ISAC optimization algorithm in spatial and DD domains, seeking the optimal trade-off between radar signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and achievable rate. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed sensing algorithm and reveal valuable insights into OTFS ISAC trade-offs under varying communication channel characteristics.
In this paper, we propose a distribution line fitting (DLF) based channel estimation method for offset quadrature amplitude modulation based filter-bank multicarrier (OQAM/FBMC) systems. ...Specifically, we firstly analyze the distribution characteristics of demodulated OQAM symbols at the receiver, and derive an intrinsic interference free relation between the real and imaginary parts of demodulated OQAM symbols. Then, based on the above derivation, we design a pilot structure of arbitrary columns of pilot symbols without guard symbols between pilot symbols and data symbols. Finally, the distribution lines can be fitted by utilizing the distribution characteristics of demodulated OQAM symbols and the channel frequency response can be estimated. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method with one column of pilot symbols outperforms the interference approximation method (IAM) in high signal-to-noise (SNR) regions and outperforms the pair of pilots (POP) method in all SNR regions in terms of bit error ratio (BER), and the proposed method with two columns of pilot symbols outperforms both IAM and POP in all SNR regions in terms of both BER and complexity.
For any finite discrete source, the competitive advantage of prefix code C 1 over prefix code C 2 is the probability C 1 produces a shorter codeword than C 2 , minus the probability C 2 produces a ...shorter codeword than C 1 . For any source, a prefix code is competitively optimal if it has a nonnegative competitive advantage over all other prefix codes. In 1991, Cover proved that Huffman codes are competitively optimal for all dyadic sources, namely sources whose symbol probabilities are negative integer powers of 2. We prove the following asymptotic converse: As the source size grows, the probability a Huffman code for a randomly chosen non-dyadic source is competitively optimal converges to zero. We also prove: (i) For any non-dyadic source, a Huffman code has a positive competitive advantage over a Shannon-Fano code; (ii) For any source, the competitive advantage of any prefix code over a Huffman code is strictly less than 1/3; (iii) For each integer n > 3, there exists a source of size n and some prefix code whose competitive advantage over a Huffman code is arbitrarily close to 1/3; and (iv) For each positive integer n , there exists a source of size n and some prefix code whose competitive advantage over a Shannon-Fano code becomes arbitrarily close to 1 as n → ∞.
