This introductory piece provides context for this symposium on Richard Shusterman's new book, Philosophy and the Art of Writing. The piece reflects on the symposium genre from Plato's classic ...dialogue to its form today. It claims that Shusterman's work asks us to take this kind of philosophical writing more seriously, and for that reason the symposium itself has taken on a different structure. The piece discusses how each of the contributors responding to the book (with Shusterman leading the way), Eli Kramer, Randall Auxier, and Charles Johnson, have engaged in practicing, nurturing, and supporting broad modes of philosophical writing, and in turn why they have chosen to do so in this context.
This volume of essays is the first to focus on the Colored Conventions movement, the nineteenth century's longest campaign for Black civil rights. Well before the founding of the NAACP and other ...twentieth-century pillars of the civil rights movement, tens of thousands of Black leaders organized state and national conventions across North America. Over seven decades, they advocated for social justice and against slavery, protesting state-sanctioned and mob violence while demanding voting, legal, labor, and educational rights. While Black-led activism in this era is often overshadowed by the attention paid to the abolition movement, this collection centers Black activist networks, influence, and institution building. Collectively, these essays highlight the vital role of the Colored Conventions in the lives of thousands of early organizers, including many of the most famous writers, ministers, politicians, and entrepreneurs in the long history of Black activism. Eve Darian-Smith's Law and Societies in Global Contexts' did not make much of an impact upon publication in 2013, perhaps because it chose not to ally itself with any of the major Cambridge ...University Press series or, more likely, because of its strange hybrid format: neither textbook nor monograph nor texts and materials, but instead a little of each, it is difficult to pigeon hole and its audience is not readily apparent. This meant that, despite the glowing endorsements on the back, it did not seem to top many people's reading list in 2013. 'Law and Societies' has been a slow burner though, quietly but insistently inserting itself into a central position in the emerging canon of global legal scholarship. It has become a go-to book for both education and scholars in this field. That it has done so is due to the quality of the writing, the smart contextualisation and use of law and society scholarship to lay the foundations of Darian-Smith's call for the emergence of a global socio-legal scholarship and the timeliness of that message. That it has taken a while for the qualities of the book to emerge is, I think, a consequence of the format confusion.
I feel privileged to have been invited to comment on Eve Darian-Smith's splendid 'Laws and Societies in Global Contexts: Contemporary Approaches (Law in Context)'. First, I'd like to speak about the ...'aesthetic' impact the book had on me and then go on to examine two issues more surgically: the first being what stance researchers should take when dealing with law in global contexts and the second what idea of law emerges from the book.
