The study of antonyms (or 'opposites') in a language can provide important insight into word meaning and discourse structures. This book provides an extensive investigation of antonyms in English and ...offers an innovative model of how we mentally organize concepts and how we perceive contrasts between them. The authors use corpus and experimental methods to build a theoretical picture of the antonym relation, its status in the mind and its construal in context. Evidence is drawn from natural antonym use in speech and writing, first-language antonym acquisition, and controlled elicitation and judgements of antonym pairs by native speakers. The book also proposes ways in which a greater knowledge of how antonyms work can be applied to the fields of language technology and lexicography.

Especially today, with the inexhaustible abundance of information, cultures, knowledge, accessible by all, in all corners of the world, in an interactive way. And yet, as soon as we pronounce this ...word, a carnival of synonyms, imaginaries, representations takes place, eliminating any idea of an outdated activity. With erudition, we touch what seems most timeless: culture, knowledge, universality and free. If one feels vaguely that today's scholarship may have little to do with yesterday's, this is not to underestimate its importance. This mysterious term is never far away, between unattainable reality, ideal and wisdom. Between curiosity, free and culture. Yes, we have the impression that scholarship is both at the heart of the depths of history, cultures and knowledge, and at the same time remains the close cousin of all our desires and all our curiosities.
Introducing a special journal issue by the same title, this article provides a foundation for seven other articles with a theoretical mission to better understand the forces and frictions through ...which migration comes about and is experienced. The collection seeks to contribute to migration theory by considering crosscutting themes related to the concepts of aspiration, desire and drivers of migration. This introductory article locates the three concepts within the development of migration scholarship. First, we show how a reappraisal of theory is grounded in influential developments in migration scholarship, such as the transnational turn, feminist approaches and, more recently, a growing theoretical interest in emotions and temporalities. Second, we examine the ways in which 'aspiration' and 'desire' have figured in migration theory. Sometimes treated as synonyms, the terms both belong to a broader semantic field of potentiality, yet connect with different theoretical approaches. Third, we address the rise of 'drivers of migration' as an analytical concept, noting how it seems to be replacing 'causes' and 'determinants' in the literature.
To make a mountain out of a molehill is to wrestle with the scale and form of a feeling. It's a loaded, gendered idiom, referring to behaviors deemed over-reactive (read: histrionic, hysterical). ...This lexicon lays out the most generative metaphors that have emerged from the intersections between my art making and nearly a decade of psychoanalysis. These metaphors come from both inside and outside of me-they are synonyms for how figure and ground are co-constitutive. Much like my experiences of being trans, a lexicon is always fruitfully in-process, its language both containing and slippery. This lexicon is also a list of apparitions. As soon as I grab an idea by its name or phrase, it disappears.
The Palaearctic fauna of the genus Limnia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 is reviewed. Recently Pherbina testacea has been transferred back to the genus Limnia, while Neodictya jakovlevi is transferred to ...Limnia herein. The reasonableness of these transfers is discussed. Two synonyms are newly proposed: L. unguicornis Scopoli, 1763 = L. paludicola Elberg, 1965, syn. nov. and L. pacifica Elberg, 1965 = L. japonica Yano, 1978, syn. nov. The negative consequences of using the structure of genitalia as the only diagnostic character are discussed. A new identification key for both sexes of Palaearctic Limnia is proposed.
