Violence against healthcare personnel is a major public health problem. Healthcare personnel are at the frontline dealing with people in stressful and unpredictable situations. Therefore, this study ...was conducted to determine the prevalence and associated factors of violence against health care personnel.
A cross sectional study was conducted in the district Peshawar. Healthcare personnel from public and private sectors working in both the primary and tertiary levels of healthcare were invited to participate. Violence was assessed through a structured questionnaire previously used in Pakistan and was defined as experiencing and/or witnessing any form of violence in the last 12 months. Mental health was assessed through the General Health Questionnaire. Logistic regression was used to estimate the association of violence against healthcare personnel with psychological distress and demographic characteristics. Data entry and analysis were conducted in STATA 14.
A total of 842 healthcare personnel participated in the study. The prevalence of violence experienced and/or witnessed by healthcare personnel in Peshawar was 51%. Verbal violence remained the predominant form of violence and almost half of the healthcare personnel (45%) were exposed to it. A quarter of the respondents (24%) reported physical violence alone or in combination with other forms of violence. In almost two third of the incidents the perpetrators were either attendants, relatives or the patients. The emergency unit and wards within healthcare facilities were the most common places where violent events took place. The major factors responsible for the violent incidents were communication failure, unreasonable expectations and perceived substandard care. No uniform policy/procedure existed to manage the incidents and the healthcare personnel adopted different responses in the wake of violent events targeting health care. Working in public healthcare facilities and having a larger number of co-workers/colleagues significantly increased the risk of violence in the healthcare settings while being a paramedic significantly reduced the risk as compared to physicians.
Violence against healthcare personnel is a serious public health issue and the prevalence is quite high. A holistic effort is needed by all stakeholders including healthcare community, the administration, lawmakers, law enforcement, civil society, and international organizations.
In recent years, we have seen how school conflicts have become the order of the day in the press. The educational administrations and, in general, all the schools in our Autonomous Communities are ...very concerned about mitigating the conflictive progress that arises in many schools. In order to curb these situations, programmes are implemented to promote school coexistence.
The aim of the present work is to examine how school conflicts are perceived by students in Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) in the province of Malaga. A study has been carried out based on the perception of conflicts from the students' perspective using a School Violence Questionnaire (CUVE). The sample consisted of 1069 students from public and state schools in the province of Malaga. The results obtained indicate the existence of a significant level of conflict. We conclude that the conflicts analysed between students and teachers can be addressed through school mediation. For the descriptive analysis and analysis of reliability and validity of the data we used JAMOVI, free statistical software. School mediation is a strategy with promoting ethical principles, voluntariness, neutrality of the mediators and confidentiality, which have an impact on the psychosocial development of the students.
Background: Workplace violence (WPV) perpetrated against health professionals is a major problem in health sector. It affects health and performance of workers. The aims of this study were: 1) to ...assess WPV facing nurses in the northern region of Morocco and 2) to identify the related factors. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in the northern region of Morocco from October to December 2021. In total, 391 volunteer nurses working in 13 hospitals were enrolled. A self-reported questionnaire, ‘Violent Incident Form’ (VIF), was distributed to the participants. It assesses verbal and physical violence. Results: We obtained 98% response rate and 97% of the respondent nurses faced at least one WPV episode the last year. Verbal violence is the most common type of violence. Significant factors as age of the victims (c2 = 15.34; p = 0.038) and the assaulters (c2 = 27.66; p <0.001), and mental condition of the assaulter (c2 = 28.27; p = 0.003) were obtained. According to post hoc residual z test, nurses aged between 40 and 49 and over 60 y.o were more exposed to physical violence than other groups, while the aggressors were younger aggressors (19-30 y.o.) and over 60 ; wherears significant less frequent were cases of aggressors aged between 31 and 50 y.o. Conclusion: A high exposure of nurses to WPV in northern Moroccan hospitals is noted. The significant factors of violence obtained must be considered for the control and prevention of WPV among nurses in Moroccan hospitals.
To assess the frequency, risk factors, consequences, and prevention of violence against healthcare workers in intensive care units.
PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, EMBASE, Cochrane, and Web of ...Science were searched for studies on violence against healthcare workers in adult intensive care units. Risk factors, patient characteristics, and implications for healthcare workers were collected. Study quality, bias, and level of evidence were assessed using established tools.
Seventy-five studies with 139,533 healthcare workers from 32 countries were included. The overall median frequency of violence was 51% (IQR 37-75%). Up to 97% of healthcare workers experienced verbal violence, and up to 82% were victims of physical violence. Meta-analysis of frequency revealed an average frequency of 31% (95% CI 22-41%) for physical violence, 57% for verbal violence (95% CI 48-66%), and 12% for sexual violence (95% CI 4-23%). Heterogeneity was high according to the I
statistics. Patients were the most common perpetrators (median 56%), followed by visitors (median 22%). Twenty-two studies reported increased risk ratios of up to 2.3 or odds ratios of up to 22.9 for healthcare workers in the ICU compared to other healthcare workers. Risk factors for experiencing violence included young age, less work experience, and being a nurse. Patients who exhibited violent behavior were often male, older, and physically impaired by drugs. Violence was underreported in up to 80% of cases and associated with higher burnout rates, increased anxiety, and higher turnover intentions. Overall the level of evidence was low.
Workplace violence is frequent and underreported in intensive care units, with potential serious consequences for healthcare workers, calling for heightened awareness, screening, and preventive measures. The potential risk factors for violence should be further investigated.
The protocol for this review was registered with Prospero on January 15, 2023 (ID CRD42023388449).
Abstract Objective The purpose of the present study was to test a model that examines the characteristics of the escalation process among heterosexual couples. It also examined how women's use of ...verbal and physical violence is associated with a sense of danger in men. Background The prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) is a critical concern for public health. IPV has serious physical and mental health consequences on the victim. Methods Participants were 165 women. The first subsample ( n = 70, 42.42%) comprised women from the general population, and the second ( n = 95, 57.57%) was composed of women living in relationships characterized by high‐intensity conflict (research population). Structural equation modeling was performed to assess the hypothesized model and to test the research hypotheses. Results Analysis indicates that the use of violence (verbal and/or physical) by one partner was positively correlated to the use of violence by the other partner. The analysis also shows that the woman's use of violence positively affects the man's sense of danger only for couples from the general population. Finally, the man's sense of danger is related to his violence toward the woman . Conclusion In a high‐conflict relationship, violence is less reciprocal but escalates more easily, whereas in the general population, violence is more reciprocal but more moderate. In addition, emotions are an essential component of marital conflict and influence the development and management of conflict. Emotional components, such as a sense of danger, may be a risk factor in the escalation of conflict to violence.
Stalking is a global spread phenomenon consisting in harassing, annoying, unwanted, and intrusive behaviors, often considered regular in courting. These behaviors are part of the broader range of ...gender-based violence. In accordance with the theory of ecological systems, this study aimed to investigate the presence of gender differences in the perception of the severity of stalking actions, considering the role of the type of violence perpetrated (physical versus verbal) and the relationship between the author and victim (Resentful ex-partner, Incompetent suitor rejected, Neighbor in dispute). The results showed gender differences in the main dimensions investigated by the questionnaire (Moral Disengagement, Normlessness beliefs, Empathy, and Perception of the Severity of Stalking). In addition, the results show that the perception of severity is influenced by the type of relationship and the type of violence perpetrated, differently between men and women. Results were discussed based on the development of literature on the topic.
INTRODUCTION: Violence against physicians is a major problem worldwide. The aim of this research is to determine the level of physical and verbal violence against physicians in Turkey by means of ...meta-analysis. METHODS: Research within the scope of physical violence and verbal violence against doctors in Turkey between the years 2000-2019 that examined the systematic screening studies have been conducted in accordance with the strategy literature. Quality evaluation was performed in the study and the studies were analyzed with meta-analysis method. Cochrane Q statistic and I² were calculated to assess whether the results of the study were heterogeneous. In the meta-analysis, the random effects model and Fisher z statistics were used as the effect type. The publication bias funnel graph was analyzed with Egger's linear regression test and Begg and Mazumdar rank correlation statistics. RESULTS: In the framework of the PRISMA flow diagram, the results of the study were shown by 18 plot for physical violence and 17 for meta-analysis by forest plot. In the study conducted with random effects model, physical violence score was 0.08 (CI; 0.05-0.13; p <0.05) and verbal severity score was 0.52 (CI; 0.43-0.60; p <0.05). was determined. In order to determine the publication, the scatterings in the funnel graph were examined and there was no publication bias according to the Egger's linear regression test, Begg and Mazumdar rank correlation statistics. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The level of physical violence against physicians was found to be quite low compared to verbal violence. In addition, physical and verbal violence plays a moderator role in the status of the article or thesis. However, it was found that the studies conducted in the cities of Ankara and Istanbul play a moderator role in physical violence, whereas it does not play a moderator role in verbal violence.
Background
This study examines the extent of exposure to verbal violence experienced by people with intellectual disabilities and whether it differs based on their housing situation: living in the ...community, with family, or in a residential facility.
Method
One hundred and eighty‐nine people with intellectual disabilities were interviewed about their experience with verbal violence.
Results
Eighty‐six percent reported experiencing verbal violence in their lifetime and approximately 77% experienced it the past week. Participants were most likely to be yelled at, and friends were the most common perpetrators. While there were few differences by setting, people living with their families were more likely to be laughed at and marginally more likely to experience rude comments.
Conclusions
Verbal violence is prevalent in the lives of people with intellectual disabilities in Israel. Interventions are necessary to assist people with intellectual disabilities to deal with such incidents, with possible additional supports needed for those living with family.
Aim
To identify the mediating and moderating roles of depressive symptoms in the relationship between workplace violence and nurses' turnover intention in South Korea.
Background
Workplace violence ...and depressive symptoms are known to influence turnover intentionsof employees.
Introduction
Among healthcare workers, nurses may be at the greatest risk of exposure to workplace violence because they have frequent contact with patients and families of patients. Depressive symptoms reported to be related to workplace violence are one set of factors affecting turnover intention.
Methods
A cross‐sectional study was designed and employed to investigate mediation and moderation roles of depressive symptoms between workplace violence and turnover intention.
Results
Verbal violence and sexual harassment increased depressive symptoms, which in turn increased turnover intentions in a sample of Korean nurses. Depressive symptoms showed partial mediation effects between verbal violence and sexual harassment and turnover intention. Depressive symptoms showed moderating effects on sexual harassment and turnover intention.
Discussion
It is necessary to reduce turnover intention not only by preventing violence but also by managing depressive symptoms in nurses who have experienced verbal violence and sexual harassment.
Conclusion
Depressive symptoms were shown to have a mediating and moderation roles on the relationship between WPV and turnover intention.
Implications for nursing and health policy
Hospital managers such as hospital and nursing directors should provide effective policies to prevent verbal violence and sexual harassment to reduce turnover intention in the workplace. It is needed to educate patients and patient caregivers about the importance of preventing violence against nurses. Policies should be established to provide regular check‐ups for depressive symptoms and psychological support for nurses who have experienced WPV.
