We evaluated whether twice-daily consumption of a multi-ingredient nutritional supplement (SUPP) would reduce systemic inflammatory markers following 6 weeks of supplementation alone (phase 1), and ...the subsequent addition of 12 weeks of exercise training (phase 2) in healthy older men, in comparison with a carbohydrate-based control (CON). Tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentrations were progressively reduced (P-time < 0.05) in the SUPP group. No change in TNF-α or IL-6 concentrations was observed in the CON group.

Adequate calcium intake and supply of vitamin D during childhood play important roles in ensuring adequate bone mass gain to achieve optimal peak bone mass. The Healthy Immigrant Children study ...employed a mixed-method cross-sectional study design to characterize the health and nutritional status of 300 immigrant and refugee children aged 3–13 years who had been in Canada for less than 5 years. This paper presents bone mineral content and vitamin D status data along with qualitative data that deepen the understanding of newcomer bone health status. A significantly higher percentage of refugee children (72.3%) had insufficient (<50 nmol/L) or deficient (<30 nmol/L) serum vitamin D compared with immigrants (53.2%). Vitamin D deficiency was most common among ethnic minority girls. Newcomer children with higher intakes of vitamin D, younger newcomer children, and those from western Europe or the United States had higher serum vitamin D levels. Immigrants had significantly higher mean total body bone mineral content compared with refugees. Total body fat, serum vitamin D, calcium intake, height, height by calcium intake, total body fat by calcium intake, and total body fat by height predicted total body bone mineral content levels. Vitamin D deficiency among newcomer children may be related to lack of knowledge regarding children’s vitamin D requirements in the Canadian environment, dietary habits established in country of origin, low income that limits healthy dietary choices, and lifestyle habits that limit exposure to sunlight. Results suggest a need to screen newcomer children and pregnant women for vitamin D deficiency and support early intervention.
Vitamin D exerts multiple immune-regulatory functions on the innate and adaptive immune systems. However, there is conflicting evidence concerning the contribution of vitamin D to the progression of ...allergies. The goal of this study was to investigate the connection between vitamin D and the prevalence of allergic disorders and serum IgE levels among young adults. The study samples included 272 students (120 males and 152 females) from Birjand University of Medical Sciences in Birjand, Iran. The allergic disorders studied, comprising allergic rhinitis (AR), asthma and atopic dermatitis (AD), were confirmed by an expert allergist. Commercial Elisa kits were used to measure serum levels of vitamin D and total IgE for all participants. The median (IQR) serum vitamin D value was 10.0 (6.0–17.0) ng/mL and the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among the target population was 81.5%. Vitamin D levels were notably higher in males than in females 12.0 (8.0–18.0) vs. 8.0 (4.0–15.0); P<0.001. The prevalence of AR, asthma and AD were 35.7%, 3.7% and 5.1%, respectively. There was no notable difference in serum vitamin D status between allergic and non-allergic students. The results of this study did not support any correlation between vitamin D status and allergy status among students.
La vitamine D est impliquée dans de multiples fonctions immuno-régulatrices au niveau de l’immunité innée et adaptative. Cependant, les conclusions sont divergentes lorsqu’on s’adresse à la contribution de la vitamine D sur la marche allergique. Le but de ce travail était d’évaluer les rapports possibles entre les taux de vitamine D et la prévalence des maladies allergiques et les taux d’IgE sériques chez de jeunes adultes. L’étude a concerné 272 étudiants (120 hommes et 152 femmes) de l’université de sciences médicales de Birjand, Iran. Les pathologies allergiques concernées incluaient la rhinite allergique (RA), l’asthme et la dermatite atopique (DA). Toutes ont été confirmées par un expert en allergologie. Des kits commerciaux Elisa ont été utilisés pour mesurer les taux sériques de vitamine D et d’IgE sériques totales chez tous les participants. Le taux sérique moyen de vitamine D était de 10,0 (6,0–17–0) ng/mL et la prévalence des déficits en vitamine D dans la population cible était de 81,5 %. Les taux de vitamine D étaient notablement plus élevés chez les hommes que chez les femmes 12,0 (8,0–18,0) vs 8,0 (4,0–15,0); p<0,001. La prévalence de la RA, de l’asthme et de la DA était de 35,7 %, 3,7 % et 5,1 % respectivement. Il n’y avait pas de différence notable dans les taux de vitamine D entre les étudiants allergiques et les non-allergiques. Les résultats de cette étude n’apportent pas de corrélation entre les taux sériques de vitamine D et le statut allergique parmi la population d’étudiants concernée.
It has been well documented that Snail plays a decisive role in various tumors. However, the direct effect of Snail on laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) has not been elaborated. In this study, ...we firstly detected the expression of Snail in 14 samples of patients with LSCC and found that its content was high in cancer tissues compared with adjacent tissues. Then we established LSCC Hep-2 cells with Snail silencing and validated the knockdown efficiency by Western blotting and real-time PCR. Results showed that silencing of Snail significantly inhibited the ability of adhesion, migration, and invasion of Hep-2 cells. Further study revealed that knockdown of Snail suppressed the epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) process of Hep-2 cells, as evidenced by downregulation of matrix metallopeptidase (MMP)-2, MMP-9, integrin subunit beta 1 (ITGβ1), β-catenin, vimentin, N-cadherin, and fibronectin and upregulation of vitamin D receptor (VDR) and E-cadherin. Additionally, transfection with the small interfering RNA of VDR reversed the effect induced by Snail silencing in Hep-2 cells. Taken together, these results demonstrate that knockdown of Snail can inhibit the EMT process of LSCC cells through the VDR signaling pathway in vitro.
Diabetes mellitus is characterized by either complete deficiency of insulin secretion, as in type 1 diabetes, or decompensation of the pancreatic beta cells in type 2 diabetes. Both vitamin D (vitD) ...and thioredoxin interacting protein (TXNIP) have been shown to be involved in beta-cell dysfunction. Therefore, this study was designed to examine vitD and TXNIP serum levels in patients with diabetes and to correlate these levels with beta-cell function markers in both types of diabetes.
The routine biochemical parameters and the serum levels of vitD and TXNIP were measured in 20 patients with type 1 diabetes and 20 patients with type 2 diabetes. The levels were then compared to those of 15 healthy control volunteers. Insulin, C-peptide and proinsulin (PI), vitD and TXNIP were measured by ELISA. Beta-cell dysfunction was assessed by homeostatic model assessment (HOMA-beta), proinsulin-to-C-peptide (PI/C) and proinsulin-to-insulin (PI/I) ratios. Correlations among various parameters were studied.
Patients with type 1 diabetes had significantly lower HOMA-beta, vitD and TXNIP levels; however, they had higher PI/C levels than the control group. Meanwhile, patients with type 2 diabetes had significantly higher C-peptide, proinsulin, PI/C, HOMA-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and lower HOMA-beta and vitD levels, with no significant difference in TXNIP levels as compared to the control group. In addition, vitD was significantly correlated positively with HOMA-beta and TXNIP and negatively with PI, PI/C, PI/I and HOMA-IR. TXNIP correlated positively with HOMA-beta and negatively with PI/C.
Our data showed that vitD and TXNIP were associated with different beta-cell dysfunction markers, indicating their potential abilities to predict the beta-cell status in people with diabetes.
Le diabète sucré est caractérisé soit par un défaut total de sécrétion d'insuline, comme dans le diabète de type 1, soit par une dégradation des cellules bêta pancréatiques dans le diabète de type 2. La vitamine D (vitD) et la protéine d'interaction avec la thiorédoxine (TXNIP) ont été montrées comme étant impliquées dans le dysfonctionnement des cellules bêta. Par conséquent, cette étude a été mise en place pour examiner les taux sériques de vitD et TXNIP chez les patients diabétiques et pour corréler ces taux avec les marqueurs de la fonction des cellules bêta pour les deux types de diabète.
Les paramètres biochimiques usuels et les niveaux sériques de la vitD et de la TXNIP ont été mesurés chez 20 patients atteints de diabète de type 1 et 20 patients atteints de diabète de type 2. Les niveaux ont ensuite été comparés à ceux de 15 volontaires témoins sains. Les niveaux d'insuline, du peptide C et de la proinsuline (PI), de la vitD et de la TXNIP ont été mesurés par ELISA. Le dysfonctionnement des cellules bêta a été évalué via le modèle d'évaluation homéostatique (HOMA-bêta), le ratio proinsuline-peptide C (PI / C) et le ratio pro-insuline-insuline (PI/I). Les corrélations entre divers paramètres ont été étudiées.
Les patients atteints de diabète de type 1 présentaient un HOMA-bêta, des taux de VitD et de TXNIP significativement plus faibles; ils avaient toutefois des niveaux plus élevés de PI/C que le groupe témoin. Parallèlement, les patients atteints de diabète de type 2 présentaient des augmentations significatives des niveaux du peptide C, de la proinsuline, du ratio PI/C, du modèle HOMA de résistance à l'insuline et des niveaux plus bas du modèle HOMA-bêta et des niveaux de vitD, sans différence significative des niveaux de la TXNIP comparativement au groupe témoin. En outre, les niveaux de vitD étaient significativement corrélés positivement avec le modèle HOMA-bêta et la TXNIP; et négativement avec la PI, le ratio PI/C, le ratio PI/I et le modèle HOMA de résistance à l'insuline. Les niveaux de TXNIP était positivement corrélés avec le modèle HOMA-bêta et négativement avec le ratio PI/C.
Nos données ont montré que les niveaux de vitD et de TXNIP étaient associés à différents marqueurs de la dysfonction des cellules bêta, indiquant leur capacité potentielle à prédire l'état des cellules bêta chez les personnes atteintes de diabète.

Objective
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in north‐west Ethiopia is causing an overwhelming case load among adult migrant workers that masked the disease burden in children. This study describes the ...clinical profile and explores comorbidities in paediatric VL patients.
Methods
A prospective study at two hospitals in this region (Gondar and Humera) was conducted in a year period, 2011–2012. The clinical manifestations and comorbidities such as malnutrition, intestinal parasitosis and vitamin D deficiency and HIV infection were assessed, and treatment outcomes noted.
Results
A total of 122 children with VL were detected during the study period with median age of 8.5 years (IQR 5–12 years); 23% were under 5 years. Eighty‐five (69.7%) cases were male. The clinical manifestations were similar to the adult patients. High rates of malnutrition, intestinal parasitosis (47.5%) and hypovitaminosis D (56.4%) were detected. The proportion of stunting and wasting was 63% and 22.2% in children aged under five years, and 50.5% and 75.9% in 5‐year and older children, respectively, using WHO standard growth curves. Only one child had HIV infection. In 95% of the cases, sodium stibogluconate (20 mg/kg/day for 30 days) was used for treatment. The treatment success rate at end of therapy was 98.3%, but the definitive outcome at 6 months could not be determined because of a high loss to follow‐up (80.2%).
Conclusion
While HIV co‐infection was rare, malnutrition, intestinal parasitosis and vitamin D deficiency were frequent indicating the need for further research on their role in the pathophysiology. Meanwhile, systematic assessment and management of malnutrition and intestinal parasitosis in VL programmes is recommended.

La leishmaniose viscérale (LV) dans le nord‐ouest de l'Ethiopie est à l'origine d'une surcharge de cas parmi les travailleurs migrants adultes qui masque la charge de morbidité chez les enfants. Cette étude décrit le profil clinique et explore les comorbidités chez les patients pédiatriques souffrant de LV.
Méthodes
Une étude prospective dans deux hôpitaux de la région (Gondar et Humera) a été réalisée dans une période d'un an, 2011à 2012. Les manifestations cliniques et les comorbidités telles que la malnutrition, les parasitoses intestinales, la carence en vitamine D et l'infection par le VIH ont été évaluées et les résultats de traitement ont été notés.
Résultats
Un total de 122 enfants avec LV ont été détectés au cours de la période de l’étude avec un âge médian de 8,5 ans (IQR: 5 ‐ 12 ans); 23% avaient moins de 5 ans. 85 (69,7%) cas étaient de sexe masculin. Les manifestations cliniques étaient similaires à celles des patients adultes. Les taux élevés de malnutrition, de parasitoses intestinales (47,5%) et d'hypovitaminose D (56,4%) ont été détectés. La proportion des retards de croissance et de l’émaciation était de 63% et de 22,2% respectivement chez les enfants de moins de cinq ans, et 50,5% et 75% chez ceux de cinq ans et plus, selon les courbes de croissance standard de l’OMS. Seul un enfant était infecté par le VIH. Chez 95% des cas, du stibogluconate de sodium (20 mg/kg/jour pendant 30 jours) a été utilisé pour le traitement. Le taux de succès à la fin du traitement était de 98,3%, mais le résultat définitif à six mois n'a pas pu être déterminée en raison du taux élevé de perdus au suivi (80,2%).
Conclusion
Bien que la coinfection VIH fût rare, la malnutrition, les parasitoses intestinales et la carence en vitamine D étaient fréquentes indiquant la nécessité de poursuivre les recherches sur leur rôle dans la physiopathologie. Pendant ce temps, l’évaluation et la prise en charge systématique de la malnutrition et des parasitoses intestinales dans les programmes LV est recommandée.

En el nordeste de Etiopía, la leishmaniosis visceral (LV) está causando una carga abrumadora de casos entre trabajadores adultos emigrantes, lo cual enmascara la carga de enfermedad en niños. Este estudio describe el perfil clínico y explora la comorbilidad en pacientes pediátricos de LV.
Métodos
Se realizó un estudio prospectivo en dos hospitales de esta región (Gondar y Humera) durante un periodo de un año (2011‐12). Se evaluaron las manifestaciones clínicas y comorbilidades tales como desnutrición, parasitosis intestinal, deficiencia de vitamina D e infección con VIH, y se anotaron los resultados del tratamiento.
Resultados
Se detectaron 122 niños con LV durante el periodo de estudio, con una mediana de edad de 8.5 años (IQR 5 – 12 años); un 23% eran menores de 5 años. 85 (69.7%) casos eran hombres. Las manifestaciones clínicas eran similares a las de los pacientes adultos. Se detectaron unas altas tasas de desnutrición, parasitosis intestinal (47.5%) e hipovitaminosis D (56.4%). Utilizando las curvas de crecimiento estándar de la OMS, la proporción de retraso en el crecimiento y raquitismo, eran del 63% y 22.2% en menores de cinco años, y de 50. 5% y 75. 9% en niños con cinco años y mayores, respectivamente. Solo un niño estaba infectado con VIH. En un 95% de los casos se utilizó como tratamiento es estibogluconato de sodio (20 mg/kg/día durante 30 días). La tasa de éxito en el tratamiento al final de la terapia era del 98.3%, pero el resultado definitivo a los seis meses no se pudo determinar debido a la alta pérdida durante el seguimiento (80.2%).
Conclusión
Mientras que la coinfección con VIH era rara, la desnutrición, parasitosis intestinal y deficiencia de vitamina D eran frecuentes, indicando la necesidad de más estudios sobre sus roles en la patofisiología. Mientras tanto, se recomienda la evaluación sistemática y el manejo de la desnutrición y la parasitosis intestinal en los programas de LV.
After orthopedic surgery, clinical outcomes are affected by comorbid cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and low 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25-(OH)D). Myocardial function was suggested to be influenced by both ...the pro-inflammatory cytokine tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and the marker of endothelial dysfunction asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA).
We investigated TNFα and ADMA changes in association with serum levels of vitamin D and cardiac function in 47 older adults after major orthopedic surgery. Subjects were characterized for biochemical profiles and transthoracic echocardiographic measures. Assessments were done before and after the correction of hypovitaminosis D through a 6-month supplementation with calcifediol started at post-operative rehabilitation.
The means serum levels of both TNFα and ADMA reduced from 1.39±0.47pg/mL to 1.30±0.37pg/mL (P<0.05) and from 0.69±0.05μmol/L to 0.68±0.04μmol/L (P<0.05), respectively. Significant treatment effects were observed for systolic blood pressure (P<0.05), left ventricular ejection function (P<0.01), global longitudinal strain (P<0.0001), 25-(OH)D (P<0.001), and calcemia (P<0.001).
After the normalization of low levels of vitamin D, we were able to observe a reduction of circulating TNFα and ADMA together with the amelioration of cardiac function. Even if our results suggest that vitamin D might exert cardiac effects indirectly through the decrease in cardio-inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, a better understanding of the precise molecular regulations should be better investigated.
Les maladies cardiovasculaires (MCV) et un faible taux circulant en 25-hydroxyvitamine D (25-(OH)D) influencent les résultats cliniques après chirurgie orthopédique. Il a été suggéré que la fonction cardiaque pourrait être influencée par le facteur de nécrose tumorale (TNFα) et par le marqueur de dysfonction endothéliale diméthyl-arginine asymétrique (ADMA).
Nous avons étudié les changements dans le niveau hématique de 25-(OH)D et l’amélioration de la fonction cardiaque en association avec les taux de TNFα et ADMA dans le sang de 47 personnes âgées (70,23±8,41 ans) après chirurgie orthopédique. Les paramètres biochimiques et cardiaques ont été évalués avant et après la supplémentation en vitamine D par voie orale dans les six mois suivant la chirurgie.
Le niveau hématique de TNF est diminué de 1,39±0,47pg/mL à 1,30±0,37pg/mL (p<0,05) et l’ADMA est diminué de 0,69±0,05μmol/L à 0,68±0,04μmol/L (p<0,05). Nous avons observés des améliorations de la pression systolique (p<0,05), de la fraction d’éjection du ventricule gauche (p<0,01), de le strain (p<0,0001), de la 25-(OH)D (p<0,001), et de la calcémie (p<0,001).
Après normalisation de faibles taux circulants de vitamine D, nous avons observé une réduction du TNFα et de l’ADMA en circulation ainsi qu’une amélioration de la fonction cardiaque. En résumé, nos résultats suggèrent que la vitamine D pourrait avoir des effets positif sur le cœur en diminuant la cardio-inflammation et la dysfonctionnement endothélial. Cependant, une compréhension améliorée des mécanismes moléculaires devrait être étudiée dans les détails.
Irisin is a newly discovered hormone produced by the muscle. This hormone is involved in glucose metabolism, muscle strength and energy expenditure. As vitamin D is also known as a key player in that ...field, we aimed to see if a single dose of 100,000IU of vitamin D would modify circulating levels of irisin in 29 young adults. Irisin was determined with the Phoenix Elisa assay at day 0, day 3, day 7 day 15 and day 28 after the loading dose. If we observed a significant increase in 25(OH)D levels (from 19.8±8.4ng/mL to 33.0±8.5ng/mL), irisin levels remained constant throughout the study (median 104.5ng/mL, with values ranging from 69.9 to 390.9ng/mL). Interestingly, one subject presented irisin values that were three times higher than all the others.
L’irisine est une hormone produite par le muscle jouant un rôle dans la force musculaire, le métabolisme glucidique et la dépense énergétique. Comme la vitamine D est également associée aux mêmes effets, nous avons voulu évaluer l’impact d’une prise de 100 000UI de vitamine D sur les taux circulants d’irisine de 29 sujets adultes. Nous avons dosé l’irisine avec le kit Elisa de Phoenix avant la prise et après 3, 7, 14 et 28jours. Si les taux de 25(OH)-vitamine D se sont élevés de façon significative (de 19,8±8,4ng/mL à 33,0±8,5ng/mL), nous n’avons pas constaté de variation du taux d’irisine (taux médian de 104,5ng/mL, s’étalant de 69,9 à 390,9ng/mL). Par contre, un sujet présentait de façon assez intéressante, des valeurs trois fois plus élevées que tous les autres.
Vitamin D insufficiency and/or high levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH) seem to be associated with abnormal glucose metabolism, which is frequent in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The purpose of this ...study was to investigate vitamin D and PTH concentrations in OSA, and to explore potential links between vitamin D, PTH and insulin resistance (IR).
A total of 112 subjects with suspected OSA were recruited consecutively, and evaluated by polysomnography (PSG) to determine the number of apnea and hypopnea episodes per hour of sleep (apnea/hypopnea index: AHI). OSA was diagnosed for AHI≥5. Average (APO2) and minimum pulse oxygen saturation (MPO2) were assessed during PSG as indices of nocturnal hypoxemia. After overnight fasting, a standard 75g oral glucose tolerance test was performed. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, PTH, fasting glucose and fasting insulin were also measured. Homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) was used to evaluate IR: HOMA-IR=fasting plasma insulin×fasting plasma glucose/22.5, with “insulin resistance” defined as HOMA-IR>2.7.
Patients were classified into 4 groups according to AHI: control group (AHI<5, n=8), mild OSA (5≤AHI<15, n=18), moderate OSA (15≤AHI<30, n=33), and severe OSA (AHI≥30, n=53). They were also classified, according to HOMA-IR, as insulin-resistant (HOMA-IR>2.7, n=59) or non-insulin-resistant (HOMA-IR≤2.7, n=45). There were no significant differences in vitamin D or PTH levels between AHI groups. HOMA-IR was significantly higher in severe OSA than in controls (P=0.019). Vitamin D concentration correlated negatively with AHI (r=−0.242, P=0.01) and with HOMA-IR (r=−0.338, P<0.001). PTH concentration correlated negatively with vitamin D concentration (P<0.001), but not with AHI or HOMA-IR. HOMA-IR correlated positively with AHI (r=0.368, P<0.001) and negatively with MPO2 (r=−0.414, P<0.001). Finally, stepwise linear multivariate regression showed that vitamin D concentration (β=−0.209, P=0.014) and MPO2 (β=−0.221, P=0.011) were independently associated with HOMA-IR.
Subjects with severe OSA may have a low vitamin D level associated with increased risk of IR. Vitamin D was independently associated with IR in OSA. Vitamin D insufficiency may play a role in the pathogenesis of IR in OSA.
Une insuffisance en vitamine D et/ou un niveau élevé d’hormone parathyroïdienne (PTH) semble(nt) associé(s) à un métabolisme glucidique anormal qui est fréquent dans l’apnée obstructive du sommeil (AOS). L’objectif de cette étude était d’évaluer les concentrations en vitamine D et en PTH en cas d’AOS, et d’explorer des corrélations potentielles entre la vitamine D, la PTH et la résistance à l’insuline (RI).
Un total de 112 patients suspectés de présenter une AOS furent recrutés consécutivement. Par polysomnographie (PSG), il a été évalué chez chaque patient le nombre d’épisodes d’apnée et d’hypopnée par heure de sommeil (indice d’apnée/hypopnée : AHI). Une AOS était diagnostiquée quand AHI≥5. Le taux moyen de saturation en oxygène (APO2) et le taux minimum de saturation en oxygène (MPO2) ont été évalués lors de la PSG comme indices d’hypoxémie nocturne. Après une nuit à jeun, un test standard d’hyperglycémie provoquée à 75g par voie orale était réalisé. Les taux de calcifédiol, de PTH, de glucose à jeun et d’insuline à jeun ont été également mesurés. Les valeurs normales du modèle homéostatique (HOMA) ont été utilisées pour évaluer la RI : HOMA-RI=niveau d’insuline à jeun dans le sang×niveau de glucose dans le sang à jeun/22,5. La résistance à l’insuline a été diagnostiquée lorsque HOMA-RI>2,7.
Les patients ont été classés en 4 groupes en fonction de leur AHI : le groupe témoin (AHI<5, n=8), AOS moyenne (5≤AHI<15, n=18), AOS modérée (15≤AHI<30, n=33), et AOS sévère (AHI≥30, n=53). Ils ont également été classés en fonction de leur résistance à l’insuline (HOMA-RI) comme insulino-résistants (HOMA-RI>2,7, n=59) ou non insulino-résistants (HOMA-RI≤2,7, n=45). Il n’existait pas de différence significative entre les niveaux de vitamine D ou de PTH entre les groupes classés en fonction du AHI. La HOMA-RI était significativement plus élevée chez les AOS sévères que dans le groupe témoin (p=0,019). Il existait une corrélation négative entre la concentration en vitamine D et l’AHI (r=−0,242, p=0,01) et la HOMA-RI (r=−0,338, p<0,001). Il existait également une corrélation négative entre la concentration en PTH et la concentration en vitamine D (p<0,001), mais pas entre la PTH et l’AHI ou la HOMA-RI. Il existait une corrélation positive entre la HOMA-RI et l’AHI (r=0,368, p<0,001). Il existait également une corrélation négative entre la HOMA-RI et le MPO2 (r=−0,414, p<0,001). Enfin, une régression linéaire multiple n’a pas montré d’association indépendante entre la concentration en vitamineD (β=−0,209, p=0,014) ou le MPO2 (β=−0,221, p=0,011) et la HOMA-RI.
Les patients avec une AOS sévère peuvent présenter un taux faible de vitamine D avec associé, un risque augmenté de RI. Dans ces conditions, le taux de vitamine D est associé de façon indépendanteà la présence d’une RI. L’insuffisance en vitamine D pourrait donc jouer un rôle dans la pathogenèse de la RI dans l’AOS.
Iron, vitamin D, and calcium intakes in the prenatal period are important determinants of maternal and fetal health. The objective of this study was to examine iron, vitamin D, and calcium intakes ...from diet and supplements in relation to maternal characteristics. Data were collected in a subsample of 1186 pregnant women from the Maternal–Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals (MIREC) Study, a cohort study including pregnant women recruited from 10 Canadian sites between 2008 and 2011. A food frequency questionnaire was administered to obtain rankings of iron, calcium, and vitamin D intake (16–21 weeks of pregnancy). Intakes from supplements were obtained from a separate questionnaire (6–13 weeks of pregnancy). Women were divided into 2 groups according to the median total intake of each nutrient. Supplement intake was an important contributor to total iron intake (median 74%, interquartile range (IQR) 0%–81%) and total vitamin D intake (median 60%, IQR 0%–73%), while the opposite was observed for calcium (median 18%, IQR 0%–27%). Being born outside of Canada was significantly associated with lower total intakes of iron, vitamin D, and calcium (p ≤ 0.01 for all). Consistent positive indicators of supplement use (iron, vitamin D, and calcium) were maternal age over 30 years and holding a university degree. In conclusion, among Canadian women, the probability of having lower iron, vitamin D, and calcium intakes is higher among those born outside Canada; supplement intake is a major contributor to total iron and vitamin D intakes; and higher education level and age over 30 years are associated with supplement intake.
