A work accident is an accidental event in the employment relationship, including diseases of the working relationship, the accident that happened on the way go to work, and coming home in the usual ...way. Work accidents can be experienced by sugar farmers. In Banyumas Regency, there are about 26.580 Sugar farmers. Based on Kesra Setda Banyumas Regency, from 2017 to November 2019 there were 323 cases of sugar farmers accidents, with 236 disabilities and 87 deaths. The purpose is to analyze the risk factors of work accidents consisting of behavioral and environmental factors. The method is an analytical survey with a cross-sectional approach. The sample was 200 people in Cilongok Districts. Data analysis includes univariate, bivariate, and multivariate. The results show that behavioral factors significantly associated with work accidents are breakfast status (p = 0,010) and unhealthy conditions (p = 0,002). Environmental factors significant to work accidents are past medical history (p = 0.000) and protein adequacy (p = 0,000). Recommendations for this research are socialization about the importance of breakfast and paying attention to the body condition before climbing, also training energy consumption diet of protein corresponding to the workload.
Abstract This paper investigates the learning patterns of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from heterogeneous work accidents (i.e., minor and severe and fatal accidents). Work safety cannot ...be overlooked, and the focus of this study on learning from failure allows to understand how SMEs match safety problems with solutions generated by past experience with work accidents and knowledge acquisition; while acknowledging that accident heterogeneity influences SMEs’ learning. The analysis uses a sample of 108 Spanish SMEs during 2006–2009. The results show that SMEs learn to modify safety practices, and that experience with both minor and severe and fatal accidents impact learning outcomes—measured as changes in the unit accident cost—through different mechanisms. Cumulative experience with past work accidents supports exploitative learning, but this effect was found only for minor accidents. Although the adoption of safety-enhancing tools (i.e., OHSAS 18001) does not affect learning, the findings reveal the value of ambidextrous learning: SMEs adopting the OHSAS 18001 learn more from severe and fatal accidents than from minor accidents by triggering drastic modifications in their safety practices.

We study the relationship between the political connections of Chinese firms and workplace fatalities. In our preferred specification, we find that the worker death rate for connected companies is ...two to three times that of unconnected firms (depending on the sample employed), a pattern that holds for withinfirm estimations. The connections-mortality relationship is attenuated in provinces where safety regulators' promotion is contingent on meeting safety targets. In the absence of fatalities, connected firms receive fewer reports of major violations for safety compliance, whereas in years of fatal accidents the rate of reported violations is identical. Moreover, fatal accidents produce negative returns at connected companies and are associated with the subsequent departure of well-connected executives. These results provide suggestive evidence that connections enable firms to avoid (potentially costly) compliance measures, rather than using connections to avoid regulatory response after accidents occur. Our findings emphasize the social costs of political connections, and suggest that appropriate regulatory incentives may be useful in mitigating these costs.

Recent conceptual and methodological advances in behavioral safety research afford an opportunity to integrate past and recent research findings. Building on theoretical models of worker performance ...and work climate, this study quantitatively integrates the safety literature by meta-analytically examining person- and situation-based antecedents of safety performance behaviors and safety outcomes (i.e., accidents and injuries). As anticipated, safety knowledge and safety motivation were most strongly related to safety performance behaviors, closely followed by psychological safety climate and group safety climate. With regard to accidents and injuries, however, group safety climate had the strongest association. In addition, tests of a meta-analytic path model provided support for the theoretical model that guided this overall investigation. The implications of these findings for advancing the study and management of workplace safety are discussed.
Workers’ health and safety are a major concern in society, since work accidents have a major impact on productivity and economy. In Brazil, the accidents are officially reported through Work Accident ...Communication and they are available to the public. Thus, this study analyzed a balanced dataset containing 1,206 records of deaths caused by work accidents related to the transport sector. Its aim was analyzing how the deaths in the transport sector are related with the other work accident factors. To achieve this goal, twelve performance data mining techniques are compared, through five performance metrics, regarding the predictive capacity of the occurrence of deaths caused by work accidents. In this context, the XGBoost and Naïve Bayes algorithms showed the best predictive capacity. The explanatory analysis indicates that work accidents followed by death in road transport are predictable due to the severity of the injuries and vital parts of the body are affected.
The effects brought by climate change and the pandemic upon worker health and wellbeing are varied and necessitate the identification and implementation of improved strategic interventions. This ...review aims, firstly, to assess how climate change affects occupational accidents, focusing on the impacts of extreme air temperatures and natural disasters; and, secondly, to analyze the role of the pandemic in this context. Our results show that the manifestations of climate change affect workers physically while on the job, psychologically, and by modifying the work environment and conditions; all these factors can cause stress, in turn increasing the risk of suffering a work accident.
There is no consensus on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on work accidents; however, an increase in adverse mental effects on workers in contact with the public (specifically in healthcare) has been described. It has also been shown that this strain affects the risk of suffering an accident.
During the pandemic, many people began to work remotely, and what initially appeared to be a provisional situation has been made permanent or semi-permanent in some positions and companies. However, we found no studies evaluating the working conditions of those who telework.
In relation to the combined impact of climate change and the pandemic on occupational health, only publications focusing on the synergistic effect of heat due to the obligation to wear COVID-19-specific PPE, either outdoors or in poorly acclimatized indoor environments, were found.
It is essential that preventive services establish new measures, train workers, and determine new priorities for adapting working conditions to these altered circumstances.

In this paper we examine the connection between the adoption of the OHSAS 18001 standard and performance from a comprehensive perspective. We first examine the adoption of the OHSAS 18001 as a function of objective safety metrics related to work accidents. Second, we evaluate the effect of this safety standard on safety performance and labour productivity, paying special attention to the returns to certified safety experience. For the empirical application we use a unique dataset of 149 Spanish firms for the period 2006–2009. The results reveal that objective safety variables explain the probability to adopt the OHSAS 18001; and that performance improvements follow the adoption of this safety system. In addition, the empirical findings tend to give ammunition to the argument that safety systems are worthwhile investments with strategic implications, as the experience on safety management may become a critical tool that can significantly improve safety and operating performance.
According to national surveillance statistics, over 3 million employees are injured each year; yet, research indicates that these may be substantial underestimates of the true prevalence. The purpose ...of the current project was to empirically test the hypothesis that organizational safety climate and transactional supervisor safety leadership would predict the extent to which accidents go unreported by employees. Using hierarchical linear modeling and survey data collected from 1,238 employees in 33 organizations, employee-level supervisor safety enforcement behaviors (and to a less consistent extent, organizational-level safety climate) predicted employee accident underreporting. There was also a significant cross-level interaction, such that the effect of supervisor enforcement on underreporting was attenuated in organizations with a positive safety climate. These results may benefit human resources and safety professionals by pinpointing methods of increasing the accuracy of accident reporting, reducing actual safety incidents, and reducing the costs to individuals and organizations that result from underreporting.
Objectives. The construction sector is one of the sectors with the highest number of occupational accidents and diseases in the world in terms of working conditions. According to the 'Communiqué on ...Occupational Hazard Classes on Occupational Health and Safety' related to Occupational Health and Safety Law No. 6331, the construction sector is considered a 'very dangerous works' class. Methods. Occupational accidents that occurred between 2012 and 2019 are examined according to occupational groups, working environments, etc. Feature importance and Kendall, Pearson and Spearman correlations were used for analysis. Results. From the studies, it is determined that fatal accidents in the construction sector in Turkey are caused by falling from height with a high rate. When the correlation values were examined, it was determined that the column 'accident type' had a negative relationship with the 'injured part of the body' and a positive relationship with the 'accident environment' column. Conclusion. A total 51% of 3517 fatal accidents examined occurred in the construction of buildings. Most deaths in the construction sector in Turkey are caused by falling from height, like many countries (41.6%). Statistics shows that despite the relevant regulations, the construction sector in Turkey is seen as a weak safety culture.
